The National Library of Greece was founded by by a decree published on May 15, 1832. It was originally named the "Public Library," with George Gennadio serving as its first supervisor. The original idea for establishing a National Library of Greece came from the philhellene J. Mayer, in an August 1824 article of the Greek Chronicle in Missolonghi, where Mayer had been struggling alongside Lord Byron for Greece's independence. Mayer's idea was carried out in 1829 by the new Greek government of John Kapodistrias, who grouped together the National Library with other intellectual institutions such as schools,
national museums, and printing houses. These were all placed in the Aegina's Orphanage, under the supervision of Andreas Moustokzidis, who thus became president of the committee of the Orphanage, director of the National Museum, and director of the National School. At the end of 1830, the library, which Mr. Moustokzidis called the National Library, held 1,018 volumes of printed books, which had been collected from Greeks and philhellenes.

Greek Books: History of Greece
While putting together my History of Greece website I read more than I had in years. Some of these books were very helpful and I have tried to list them in that order. Most of them are easy reading. Some of them are hard to come by but I have included links where you can order, or attempt to locate them using Amazon's Search which I have found to be pretty effective. Most of the historical novels like Mary Renault can be found in the literature section. Matt's Pick! Democracy at Gunpoint was written by Andreas Papandreou while in exile during the Junta. It contains a history of Greece, particularly the relationship with the US. It is a good inside look at Greek politics and history and makes enjoyable reading, not just for historical purposes. For those of you who don't know, Papandreou returned to Greece after the fall of the Junta and became one of the most popular Prime Ministers in Greek History. Search Now: Matt's Pick!

  • History Greece has a history stretching back more than 4.000 years. The people of the mainland, called Hellenes, organised great naval and military expeditions, and explored the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, going as far as the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus Mountains. One of those expeditions, the siege of Troy, is narrated in the first great European literary work, Homer's Iliad. Numerous Greek settlements were founded throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa as a result of travels in search of new markets.
During the Classical period (5th century B.C.), Greece was composed of city-states, the largest being Athens, followed by Sparta and Thebes. A fierce spirit of independence and love of freedom enabled the Greeks to defeat the Persians in famous battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea.
In the second half of the 4th century BC, the Greeks, led by Alexander the Great, conquered most of the then known world and sought to hellenize it.

Magnesia was among the first areas in Greece to be inhabited . Archaeologists have brought to light mesolithic finds from the Sarakinos cave, neolithic settlements such as Dimini and Sesklo, as well as for- gotten Mycenaean cities that played an important role during the Bronze Age. All these discoveries prove that distinguished cities were found in the district around pre- sent day Volos and that they reached their peak during the Mycenaean era. Among them there was the legendary Iolkos , capital of Mycenaean Thessaly and site of today's Volos. It was from here that the Argo set off with Jason and the Argonauts for the distant shores of the Black Sea in quest of the Golden Fleece. One result of this campaign was to strengthen the maritime empire of that region's bold inhabitands, the Minyans; the other was to broaden the naval horizons of the period. Homer also mentions the participation of Iolkos in the Trojan War , along with the other Magnesian cities, among which is listed Phthia, the birthplace of Achilles. After the Mycenean era, the cities of Magnesia began to decline and by the 4th century BC, the province was just an insignificant province of Macedonia. During the course of Greek history, however, certain cities linked by a common characteristic -their proximity to the Pagasitic gulf- restored a measure of its gold glory to the region. For example, one can cite Pagases, which flourished particularly during the 5th century BC; Dimitrias, founded in the 3rd century BC; Phthiotic Thebes, an important city during the early Christian era; and Almiros, a powerful commercial centre of the 12th century.

Historical Epitome
As with most other civilizations concerned, the temper of the early Greek field is increasingly impervious to suggestions of formative interactions with other cultures, or of evolution and thus inauthencity within the bodies of works attributed to standard authors such as Plato and Aristotle. The detailed study of classical Greek thought is significantly hampered as a result.

History . Boardman, Griffin, and Murray's Oxford History of the Classical World (1986) contains helpful summaries by reputable people. The Oxford Classical Dictionary (OCD) is the basic first reference for persons and ideas; we are among those who prefer the Hammond (1970) to the more politically correct Hornblower Texts . Opinions on text and corpus date and authenticity are summarized in OCD; the 2nd edition is notably less reactionary in these matters than the 3rd.

History of Greece in Ottoman Times
Greek History in Ottoman Times - Geography of Greece and its Importance
Greece lies at the juncture of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is heir to the heritages of classical Greek History, the Byzantine Empire, and nearly four centuries of Ottoman Turkish rule in Greek History. From ancient Greece the modern country inherited a sophisticated culture and a language that has been documented for almost three millennia. The language of Periclean Athens in the 5th century BC and the present-day language of the Greeks are recognizably one and the same; few languages can demonstrate such continuity. From the Byzantine Empire it has inherited Eastern Orthodox Christianity and from Ottoman rule attitudes and values that continue to be of significance in Greece and in Greek History, not least in shaping the country's political culture.
Greece is a country that is at once European, Balkan, and Mediterranean and has a unique history. It is also a country that is peculiarly burdened by its past: Greece is the only country in the world, Greek the only language, and Greeks the only people regularly prefaced by the epithet "modern." References to Greece and Greek usually denote ancient Greece and ancient Greek. Greeks, however, take great pride in their cultural heritage of their Greek History, and the notion of an unbroken continuity between ancient and modern Greece is an essential element in the Greek self-image and Greek History.
