A history of
Ancient Greece
By the standards of the times Bronze Age (3000-1000B.C.) Ancient Greece was comparatively sophisticated but was also strongly influenced by the yet more accomplished Minoan civilization based on Crete that strongly flourished from 2000 -1450 B.C.
Minoan Crete maintained an extensive network of trading links that brought influences drawn from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Crete. The Minoans exported pottery, grains, wines, and oils, and tended to import luxury materials such as precious metals, jewels, and ivory. Minoan culture gave rise to several great cities that featured stone buildings and provision for a water supply and drainage. The city adjacent to the great Palace of Knossos was home, at its peak, to almost one hundred thousand people. Knossos was thus one of the first major cities in human history!!!   On the Greek mainland meanwhile Mycenaen authority was exercised through a number of localised kingdoms. These kingdoms may have adopted written record keeping based on Minoan examples.

Greece's History
As Told Through Ancient Ruins

The shores of the Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first civilizations in Europe; the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. A Dark Age followed, until around 800 BC a new Hellenic Greece emerged. It was this Greece of city-states that established colonies along the Mediterranean, resisted Persian invasions, and whose culture would be the basis of Hellenistic civilization that followed the empire of Alexander the Great.
The beginning of the Bronze Age around 3100 BC is a period of great unrest in Greece, but it also marks the beginning of the region as an important center of civilization.
Around 1700 BC, a large disturbance, probably an earthquake, (or possibly an invasion from Turkey) devastated the society. But the population rose again, and the palaces were rebuilt even larger than before. Around 1650 BC, the eruption of the volcanic island Thera caused tsunami which destroyed installations near the coasts. The sulphur dioxide emitted by the volcano also caused a decline in temperature, which resulted in poor harvests for several years.
Around 1400 AD the Turks (Ottoman Empire) savagely invaded and then occupied Greece for a period of about 400 years. Even after March 25, 1821 when mainland Greece was liberated, Crete was still under Ottoman rule. But the island's rough and mountainous - yet beautiful - terrain kept many places inaccessible to the Turks. Even when the Venetians invaded Greece, Crete was spared because they were at a great disadvantage against the islanders who knew the land. Thus, Crete was a major center from the liberation movement.

The Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire began in 1821 and concluded with the winning of independence in 1830. With the support of England France and Russia a monarchy was established. A Bavarian prince Otto was named king in 1833. He was deposed 30 years later and the Great Powers chose a prince of the Danish House of Glucksberg as his successor. He became George I King of the Hellenes. The Megali Idea (Great Idea) a vision of uniting all Greeks of the declining Ottoman Empire within the newly independent Greek State exerted strong influence on the early Greek state. At independence Greece had an area of 47 515 square kilometers (18 346 square mi.) and its northern boundary extended from the Gulf of Volos to the Gulf of Arta. The Ionian Islands were added in 1864; Thessaly and part of Epirus in 1881; Macedonia Crete Epirus and the Aegean Islands in 1913; Western Thrace in 1918; and the Dodecanese Islands in 1947. Greece entered World War I in 1917 on the side of the Allies. After the war Greece took part in the Allied occupation of Turkey where many Greeks still lived. In 1921 the Greek army attacked from its base in Smyrna (now Izmir) and marched toward Ankara. The Greeks were defeated by Turkish forces led by Mustafa Kemal (later Ataturk) and were forced to withdraw in the summer of 1922. Smyrna was sacked by the Turks and more than 1.3 million Greek refugees from Turkey poured into Greece creating enormous challenges for the Greek economy and society and effectively ending the Megali Idea.

27. Town Of Greece History
The official flag of the Town of Greece was adopted at a meeting of the Town Council History The surrounding area is home to many battles and skirmishes
http://www.townofgreece.org/AboutOurTown/History.asp
Long the home of the Seneca Indians, the area which would become the Town of Greece was first visited by the French explorer LaSalle in 1669. This area would be witness to numerous troop movements over the next century as the French and English fought for control of North America. The Indian trail on the Ridge became the roadway along which English troops under General John Prideaux marched against the French at Fort Niagara. Later this same trail would carry pioneers and settlers westward. The first permanent settlement was established in 1792 along the west side of the Genesee River at King's Landing, later to be named Hanford Landing.
With the establishment of the Port of the Genesee by President Thomas Jefferson in 1805, trade from the Great Lakes began to pour in. With access to Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, Ridge Road and later the Erie Canal, the Town became a transportation hub and a major supplier of farm produce to the new and growing nation.
Originally called Northampton, the Town of Greece was established by the New York State Legislature on March 22, 1822. Its name was chosen because of the current wave of sympathy toward the Greeks who were then fighting for independence from Turkish rule. The Town seat was named Charlotte for the daughter of Colonel Troup, the land agent for an English estate which owned much of western New York at the time. Charlotte itself was incorporated as a village in 1869, and was part of Greece until 1916 when it was annexed to the City of Rochester as the 23rd Ward.

From 'Travels and Researches in Crete', Vol. II, Captain Spratt, London 1865 INTRODUCTION The history of Sfakia is exemplary for the history of Crete. Crete's position in the Mediterranean Sea is at the crossroads of traffic between Europe, Asia and Africa. Therefore, it always has had the interest of many rulers and usurpators, who all let their traces, until the present day. The region of Sfakia plays a significant role in all the freedom struggles. Due to its natural environment -closed in by the sea and in the north by the nearly 2500 meters high White Mountains, the inhabitants were very hard to be beaten. Their independent nature brought them many freedom fighters, which made several turns in history.

Its ancient name was Peparethos and is mentioned by the pre-Hellenic people of Asia Minor who settled in the Aegean region in the period 2800 - 2000 BC. This name is mentioned likewise by Thoukydides. Around 1600 BC Cretans whose leader was the mythical king Staphylos, son of Theseus and Ariadne, settled the island. As tradition reminds us, Theseus, son of Aegeas king of Athens, was sent with 7 young boys and 7 young girls to the Cretan king Minos, as a duty demanded by Athens, intended to be offered as sacrifice to the Minotaur (a strange creation of mythology, half man, half bull) who lived in the labyrinth underneath the palace of Knosos in Crete. There, Theseus became acquainted with Ariadne, Minos' daughter. Ariadne fell in love with him and helped him, giving him a ball of wool, to escape from the labyrinth and to survive. Theseus found the exit, kidnapped Ariadne and left Crete. . But on the island of Naxos he abandoned Ariadne who in her loneliness discovered the God Dionisos who in his turn fell in love with the girl and took her to Lemnos. In Lemnos Ariadne and Dionisos had four sons, Thoantas, Oinopionas, Staphylos and Peparithos. Peparithos was the first to settle on the island of Skopelos. Until today his name survives in this place full of olive trees and pine forests.

The history of Hellas starts somewhere in the prehistory, but the Glory of Greece starts with the Mycenaean civilisation which was influenced by a "forgotten" civilisation: the Minoic kingdom. Dark ages follow this golden era, but the pattern for the future is set with the invasion of the Dorians and the rise of the Polis. Several conflicts with the immense Persian empire show the power of city-states. However, internal conflicts for hegemony push Hellas into the hands of Macedon who ends the indepency of Hellas by conquering it. Greek culture is spread out over Asia Minor with Macedonian conquests, but eventually it is Rome who becomes the new worldpower.
Prehistory and Earliest history (till 800BC) The Minoic civilisation flourished during this period and was the cause for the birth of the Mycenaean civilisation on the mainland of Hellas. It was the time of the palace cultures: enormous strongholds on hills. A coalition of these cities formed an expedition and destroyed Troy. Everybody has heard of this as Homer wrote one of the most succesfull books in history about it: the Illiad.

According to Greek mythology, Hercules was tormented and driven to madness by the goddess Hera. In a state of insanity, Hercules committed horrible crimes for which he later repented. The oracle of Delphi instructed Hercules that if he performed a series of tasks given him by his weak cousin Eurystheus, he would be forgiven fully. As shown in this illustrated narrative, he battled a nine-headed hydra while draped in a magical lionskin, gathered golden apples and journeyed to Haydes while performing the Twelve Labors Of Hercules. Here is a well illustrated and complete account of that story produced a group of middle school students. The building of the National Library of Greece, built entirely of marble, was designed by the Danish architect Th. Hansen, who was 75 years old at the time. He delegated the supervision of the work to the architect Ernst Ziller. The creation of this marvelous building was the result of a donation from the very rich Greek brothers Andreas, Panagis and Maris Vallianos. The buildings housing the National Library of Greece, the National University of Athens, and the Academy of Athens constitute, according to the expression of their architect Th. Hansen, constitute an "Athenian Trilogy". The National Library of Greece is organized, according to an old law of 1943, which is still valid, as follows:

Some have become destinations for pilgrimages while others carry on the spiritual tradions of long ago. Leimonos Monastery , (pictured on left) built in 1523 is a large cluster of buildings between Kaloni and Filia. It is an important spiritual center on the island with a museum, a library and social services. Overnight stays are possible. They have a festival here celebrating Ag. Ignatious on the second weekend of October.
A modern day phenomenon is the developing Monastery of Agiou Raphael in Thermi. People come from all over Greece to the shrine of the Newly Sanctified Martyrs of Raphael, the Father Superior of the destroyed monastery, of Nikolas, the deacon, and the young Irene, all three of whom died as martyrs at the hands of the Turks in 1463. A miracle was responsible for the discovery of the bodies of the saints, by Angelos Rallis, who donated the land for the monastery. This monastery is constantly visited year-round by pilgrims searching for a miracle. The complex has rooms for overnight stays. There is a celebration here on the Tuesday after Easter.
