A Greek Transport Ministry source said the government will comply with the ruling in a way that would not jeopardize the latest attempt to sell off loss-making Olympic Airlines. "As a result of the court ruling, the Greek state is obliged to ask Olympic Airways to return the subsidies, a move which will put the company in a difficult position in view of its negative financial situation," the source said. It is not clear how the government will claw back the aid from debt-laden Olympic Airways. Olympic Airways was left with the ground handling business, the technical base and the IT systems and debt when Olympic Airlines was set up with ownership of the flight operations.

The gravity of the situation which confronts the world today necessitates my appearance before a joint session of the Congress. The foreign policy and the national security of this country are involved. One aspect of the present situation, which I wish to present to you at this time for your consideration and decision, concerns Greece and Turkey. The United States has received from the Greek Government an urgent appeal for financial and economic assistance. Preliminary reports from the American Economic Mission now in Greece and reports from the American Ambassador in Greece corroborate the statement of the Greek Government that assistance is imperative if Greece is to survive as a free nation. I do not believe that the American people and the Congress wish to turn a deaf ear to the appeal of the Greek Government.

I do not believe that the American people and the Congress wish to turn a deaf ear to the appeal of the Greek Government. Greece is not a rich country. Lack of sufficient natural resources has always forced the Greek people to work hard to make both ends meet. Since 1940, this industrious and peace-loving country has suffered invasion, four years of cruel enemy occupation, and bitter internal strife. When forces of liberation entered Greece they found that the retreating Germans had destroyed virtually all the railways, roads, port facilities, communications and merchant marine. More than a thousand villages had been burned. Eighty-five per cent of the children were tubercular. Livestock, poultry and draft animals had almost disappeared. Inflation had wiped out practically all savings.

Macedonians In Greece
The Macedonian-Greek conflict is a very complex issue. Lots of books have been written about Macedonia, but many of them simply serve to justify the aspirations, propaganda, and the partition of Macedonia of 1913, by the neighboring countries such as Greece. These sources are, therefore, biased. The Greek pages about Macedonia, rely strictly on their very own Greek propaganda sources, which naturally makes them biased. In order to find the real truth about Macedonia, one has to rely on the independent and neutral sources when looking into history. This page is such case, which browses historical independent and neutral facts, to show the truth about Macedonia against the century-old Greek propaganda.
TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION MACEDONIA IN THE XX CENTURY
  • Biased Balkan Statistics on the Population of Macedonia
  • Neutral Statistics on the Population of Macedonia ... BIBLIOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION "The Macedonian minority in Greece does not exist", "the Macedonian nation does not exist at all", - are the claims of the official Greek government. The following will prove the total apsurdity of these claims, in the eyes of the history. MACEDONIA IN THE XX CENTURY Biased Balkan Statistics on the Population of Macedonia In 1870's, while Macedonia was still under the Turkish Empire, the new independent Balkan states started to propagate how the Macedonians do not exist, and how Macedonia was populated only by Greeks, Bulgarians, and Serbs. This is the beginning of the so-called "Macedonian Question". Ethnographers, historians, and writers begun writing books in favor of this or that propaganda. Many of them did not even visit Macedonia, while those who did already had a written scenario. Their presence there was only a simple formality. Table 1 gives an excellent proof of those Balkan speculations surrounding Macedonia:

Olympics 2004: give the strays of Greece a sporting chance
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: The Greek Government We, the undersigned, call upon the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Costas SIMITIS; the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Georgios DRYS and the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Dimitrios GREGORAKIS, to have stray dogs and cats in Athens, and elsewhere in Greece, sterilized, checked, tagged and released instead of homed in shelters or killed, as the country prepares to host the 2004 Olympic Games. We also call upon said Ministers to implement a nation-wide education program focusing on the importance of responsible pet ownership.
In preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games, it is feared that the Greek government is going to deal with the problem of stray animals, especially in and around Athens, by mass poisoning them. Government representatives deny this and profess shock at such a 'rumor'. However, owned and stray animals in Greece are poisoned en masse every year already; it is common practice to throw poison in the quiet of the night and remove the bodies before dawn. Documented witness reports of this practice are abundant and have even been shown on Greek television.
31 Greek animal welfare societies have set up a petition suggesting a full-scale neutering program of all dogs and cats. There is money available for this to be done. But the Greek Minister of Agriculture, among others, is apparently proposing that this money be spent on the setting up of shelters for the strays. We don’t support this idea. Who will pay for the running costs? What qualifications will those who run the shelters have? How will their actions be inspected? Who will be the inspectors? What method will be used to put down the animals? And what will happen to the shelters and animals after the Olympics are over?

North America Massive General Strike Shakes Greek Government... While Spain prepares to follow By our Greek and Spanish correspondents Friday, 27 April 2001 On Wednesday 26th April 2001, the biggest general strike for fifteen years took place in Greece. Both public and private sectors came out on strike with very big percentages of success, with many factories striking 100%. And, of course, the strike was nearly 100% in the public sector. The demonstration in Athens was huge: 150,000-200,000 workers participated in the rally and then marched through the centre of Athens to the Parliament. It was really an impressive demonstration - almost two miles long. In recent years, the Greek working class had succeeded in making big gains which, in a number of areas, meant a better deal for the Greek workers: the age of retirement for Greek men was lowered to 60 (less for workers involved in heavy labour), and 55-58 for women. Now, at a stroke, the right-wing "socialist" administration of Simitis wants to cancel many of these gains. Pasok had been moving to the right For the past ten years, the leaders of Pasok have moved steadily to the right. Like the right wing leaders everywhere, they have abandoned all pretence to stand for socialism and the working class. Under the pressure of Brussels, they have moved to "modernise" Greece: by which they mean, introduce flexibilisation of labour, privatisation, downsizing, and all the other delights of the market economy.

To the Hellenic Parliament: Sano Halo's personal account of a death march in Turkey that took the lives of her family as recounted by her daughter, Thea, in "Not Even My Name" bears witness to the greatest crime humanity can perpetrate against itself: genocide. The Turkish state's elimination of its Armenian, Greek and Assyrian populations was part and parcel of the same effort to obliterate Turkey's Christian minorities. All were perpetrated during the same time frame, by the same governments, and using the same methods - namely, massacres, labor camps and death marches under the guise of deportations.

Text Only 1964: Guns fall silent in Cyprus The United Nations has brokered another ceasefire in Cyprus, defusing the growing crisis between Greek and Turkish Cypriots and heading off the threat of invasion by Turkey. Fighting on the island has been steadily escalating in recent days. The Greek-led Cypriot government said Turkish jets had dropped 750lbs (340 kg) of bombs and napalm on their strongholds in north-west Cyprus. "The whole area is on fire," said a spokesman for the Cypriot government. "We cannot estimate casualties but there must be hundreds. Whole villages have been wiped out." They also accused the Turkish government of landing troops on the north-west coast of the island. Ultimatum The President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, a Greek Cypriot, issued an ultimatum to Turkey, threatening to attack every Turkish Cypriot village in Cyprus if the air raids were not stopped. The raids also brought concern from the Greek government in Athens, which has so far stayed out of the conflict.
