http://www.macedonian-heritage.gr/OfficialDocuments/NameDiff.html
THE DIFFERENCE OVER THE NAME “REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA” The U.N. Security Council, by its resolution 817/1993, specifically noted that “a difference has arisen over the name of the State (i.e., of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) which needs to be resolved in the interest of the maintenance of peaceful and good-neighbourly relations in the region”. In less diplomatic terms, this means that the Security Council reached the conclusion that the name “Republic of Macedonia” could prove a threat to peace and to good neighbourly relations in the Balkans. It was in this spirit that the UN admitted the applicant state to membership under the provisional name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” (FYROM), while at the same time asked the Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Conference of Former Yugoslavia Mr. Cyrus Vance and Lord Owen to offer their good offices to settle the difference and to promote confidence-building measures. Nevertheless, despite long negotiations under the Co-Chairmen in New York, last year, President Gligorov refused categorically to co-operate toward a settlement of the difference over the name. Indeed, in his letter to Secretary General Boutros-Ghali, on 29 May 1993, he registered his opposition to the Security Council’s resolution concerning the name by stating his “firm conviction that our constitutional name (“Republic of Macedonia”) does not imply territorial or other aspirations whatsoever” and, consequently no change in the name was warranted.

Today's practice is the opposite of the classical democracy ideas for citizens that oppose chauvinistic policy of the Greek leaders towards Macedonia. Greek Democracy of Personal View considered Crime in Greece
The Case of Michael Papadakis and Other People The direct democracy in ancient Greece was equality among citizens, liberty, and respect for the law and justice.

On December 10, 1992 Michael Papadakis - 17 years old, was arrested in downtown Athens, because he was giving away leaflets with the following content: ,,Do not let yourselves be poisoned by nationalism. Macedonia belongs to its own people. There is no pure race. We are all of combined origin".
Because he tried to ,,incite people to divide between themselves" he was sentenced to one year in jail. The conviction of Papadakis is one of the last displays of suppression towards the citizens that oppose the chauvinistic policy of the Greek leaders against Macedonia /source Amnesty International - EUR 25/01/93/.
Six people - Teodorus Pagomenos, Dionisis Gurnas, Rula Adamopulu, Stergios Giumakis, Anna Stal and Kostas Kutlos were convicted on January 27, 1992 because they attached posters on walls with the text:

History of Greece Before 2000 BCE The Helladic (pre-Greek) tribes entered the peninsula overland from Asia. On Crete they developed an advanced, culturally and technically sophisticated civilization that benefited from its closeness to Egypt and the cultures of the Near East. The Minoans, named for Minos their legendary king, dominated the Aegean world. They relied on sea power to protect their commerce and their cities. The Achaeans (proto-Greeks) invaded the peninsula from the north and settled there. The two cultures, the Achaeans with their sky-gods and the Helladic earth-goddess worshippers were eventually fused into one Hellenistic civilization. 1600 BCE The Minoans extended their regime over the Achaeans. The interaction of the Minoan and Achaean cultures gave rise to a new civilization - the Mycenaeans, whose center was at Mycenae. 1400-1100 BCE The Mycenaean Heroic Age that inspired the Homeric epic The Illiad, which describes the assault of the Achaeans on Troy.

Beginnings
The first major civilization in the region of Greece arose on Crete, an island in the Aegean Sea, about 3000 B.C. It is known as the Minoan culture after King Minos, the legendary ruler of Crete. The Minoans were expert sailors, and they grew wealthy from trade. The remains of luxurious palaces provide evidence of the Minoan's prosperity and building skills. The Minoans had a system of writing. Scholars do not know what language they spoke, except that it was not Greek.
The development of Greek civilization began about 2000 B.C., when small farming villages were set up by people who came to Greece from somewhere to the north. By about 1600 B.C., they had built fortified towns, each centered on a palace, in the major valleys. The culture that developed on the mainland is called Mycenaean after the large and powerful town of Mycenae in the Peloponnesus, the southern part of the mainland.
The Minoans dominated the Aegean world until about 1450 B.C., when the Mycenaeans took control of the region. The Mycenaeans adopted features of the Minoan culture. For example, they adapted the Minoan writing system to Greek. Historians beleive Mycenae won a war against Troy, in Asia Minor (now Turkey), in the mid-1200's B.C. This war inspired many major works of classical literature.

Names of the Greeks Ancient Greece is the term used to describe the Greek -speaking world in ancient times. It refers not only to the geographical peninsula of modern Greece , but also to areas of Hellenic culture that were settled in ancient times by Greeks: Cyprus , the Aegean coast of Turkey (then known as Ionia Sicily and southern Italy (known as Magna Graecia ), and the scattered Greek settlements on the coasts of what are now Albania Bulgaria Egypt France ... Spain , and Ukraine There are no fixed or universally agreed upon dates for the beginning or the end of the Ancient Greek period. In common usage it refers to all Greek history before the Roman Empire , but historians use the term more precisely. Some writers include the periods of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations (from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC ), while others argue that these civilizations, while Greek-speaking, were so different from later Greek cultures that they should be classed separately.

    History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.
