MAP OF ATHENS
ATHENS MAP AND GEOGRAPHY ATHENS MAP GEOGRAPHY AND FACTS Athens (Greek: Athinai) is the capital and largest city of Greece. It lies on a small plain that extends southward to the Saronic Gulf, a branch of the Aegean Sea. The city center is 11 km (7 mi) from the coast and and forms a single metropolitan area with the port of Piraeus. Greater Athens has an area of 427 sq km (165 sq mi) and a population of 3,096,775 (1991). The population of the city proper is 748,110.
Athens is surrounded by mountains: Aigaleo to the west, Parnes to the north, Pentelikon to the northeast, and Hymettus to the east. Most are of limestone or marble, from which the ancient buildings of the city were constructed. The plain on which the city lies contains isolated limestone hills, including Lykavittos (Lycabettus), which rises 339 m (1,112 ft) above the sea, and the flat-topped Acropolis, 156 m (512 ft) high, around which the city grew. The city is on the Ilissus River, which is dry for much of the year and carries abundant water only after winter storms. Athens has a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Rainfall is slight. Greece is made up of the mainland (the Balkan Peninsula and the Peloponnesus) and numerous islands scattered across the Aegean and Adriatic Seas. Most early civlizations developed near a good source of water. Greece is no exception; people settled in small, independent communities along or near the coasts of the mainland and the islands. The land was mountainous and received limited rainfall, but the sea provided lots of resources for the ancient Greeks. One of the earliest civilizations was centered around the island of Crete . Later, several cities in the Peloponnesus gained power this civilization was called Mycenean . Around 800 BC small farming communities became organized into larger city-states, called a "polis." As their population grew, the Greeks established colonies around the Mediterranean, from southern Italy to the Black Sea.

Ptolemy's Geography
The Science of the Earth's Surface
Ptolemy, who gave Greek astronomy its final form in the second century A.D., did the sameand morefor geography and cartography. His massive work on the subject, which summed up and criticized the work of earlier writers, offered instruction in laying out maps by three different methods of projection, provided coordinates for some eight thousand places, and treated such basic concepts as geographical latitude and longitude. In Byzantium, in the thirteenth century, Ptolemic maps were reconstructed and attached to Greek manuscripts of the text. And in the fifteenth century, a Latin translation of this text, with maps, proved a sensation in the world of the book. A best seller both in the age of luxurious manuscripts and in that of print, Ptolemy's "Geography" became immensely influential. Columbus one of its many readersfound inspiration in Ptolemy's exaggerated value for the size of Asia for his own fateful journey to the west.
