During these periods, Ancient Greece was home to a number of distinguished philosophers, mathematicians, politicians historians and generals which now serve as a gateway to Western Civilization. The Ancient Greek civilization and territory was passed through to the Roman Empire and afterwards to the Byzantine Empire. In 1456 the capital of Byzantine, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and with it all the Byzantine territory. After being overruled for nearly 400 years, Greeks revolted against the Ottoman Empire on 25 March 1821 and claimed their independence. . The Greek state was recognised as such in 1830, but has been known by its current official name, the Hellenic Republic, since 1924.

Greek Geography
Geography is the study of landscape, such as the mountains, the rivers, the plains, the coastline, and the placement of cities. We begin to look at the geography of ancient Greece when we examine how Greeks lived on their farms, why they traded, road systems, and the plant life that ancient Greece had. Geography has always had a great influence on Greece and its inhabitants. It is largely responsible for numerous continuities in its extensive history. While the mountains that split the Greek lands have contributed to localism they have been a major barrier to unity as a nation. The struggle of communication by land and the significant presence of the sea have made mariners out of Greeks for numerous generations. The natural resources ensure a steady flow of abundance and guarantee sustenance if governed wisely. There are enormous obstacles in the way of studying the geography of ancient Greece. One obstacle is that because of the tradition of fragmented land holding; plots of land became very small and rarely have the same names through time. Because of this, archaeologists cannot identify a feature mentioned in a document and go and see what is there today. The second obstacle is that we are separated from the classical Greek landscape by a great gap in time: well over a thousand empty years with almost no relevant written record to show how the landscape was developing. Archaeological survey bridges this gap, but for geographical purposes, this information is extremely limited, in that much of the material found cannot be closely dated.

FACTS ABOUT GREECE Geography Greece is located at the southernmost tip of Europe and has one of the most unique geographic formations of any country in Europe. Including the islands, it has an area of 50,959 square miles and a population of 10.2 million (1991 census). An estimated five million Greeks live abroad. Greece is washed on three sides by seas: by the Ionian Sea to the west, the Aegean Sea to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the north lie Albania, former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. To the northeast is Turkey.
At the crossroads of three continents, Greece is a stepping-stone to Asia and Africa. Some four-fifths of Greece's land territory is mountainous. Its coastline, with its many gulfs and inlets, is one of the longest of any country in Europe. The main geographic divisions of Greece are (1) the northern region which includes Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace; (2) Central Greece and Thessaly; (3) the Peloponnese which is separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal; and (4) the islands of the Aegean Sea to the east of the mainland, the Ionian islands to the west, and Crete, the largest Greek island, to the south. The highest mountain in Greece is Mount Olympus (9,754 ft.), seat of the gods of Greek mythology. Mount Parnassus (7,066 ft.) has on its lower slope the ancient site of Delphi, once dedicated to the god Apollo and famous for its oracle. On the peninsula of Chalkidiki, located in the north-east, is Mount Athos, where a number of monasteries of the Greek Orthodox Church form, as they have for centuries, an autonomous monastic community.

The island is located in the Eastern Aegean and is approximately 180 miles in distance from Athens. It has an area of 1630 km2, is 70 km long and 45 km wide with a stretching coastline of 320 km.
It is the third largest island in Greece following Crete and Evia respectively. It has a population of approximately 100,000.
GEOPHYSICAL FEATURES
The greatest part of the island proves a thriving ground for olive groves, while pine forests occupy a large area in the centre. In the west the landscape is more ascetic, scattered with acorns and rocky mountain ranges. The two gulfs, Geras and Kallonis, add to Lesvos' distinctive shape. There are small but fertile plains in the regions of Kallonis, Geras, Ippios and Eressos. Small valleys and springs, mountain ranges and beaches - both sandy and pebble, conveying an image of island and mainland at the same time, form a landscape which at every turn resounds with the Aegean, with Greece.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS After gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire early in the nineteenth century, Greece became a monarchy ruled by representatives of several European royal houses. Domestic politics and relations with neighbor states began a pattern of persistent turmoil.
      The Conditions for Revolution
The modern state of Greece came into existence as a result of a protracted, bloody war against the Ottoman Empire between the years 1821 and 1832. The significance of the Greek War of Independence transcends the bounds of Greece and its history. It was the first major war of liberation after the American Revolution; it was the first successful war for independence from the Ottoman Empire; it was the first explicitly nationalist revolution; and it provided a model for later nationalist struggles. The intellectual basis of nationalism came from the affluent and prominent diaspora Greeks of the eighteenth century. The two most prominent leaders of this group were Adamantios Korais and Rigas Velestinlis. Korais, primarily an educator, advocated the education of Greeks about their ancient heritage as the path toward emancipation. He played no active role in founding the modern Greek state. The fiery revolutionary Velestinlis wrote a blueprint for a new Greek state that would arise from the ashes of revolution against the empire. He was executed by the Turks in 1798.

The dramatic mountain gorges and villages of Epirus rise above the plain of Thessaly, an agricultural heartland bordered by the Byzantine-era monasteries of Meteora. North-
    Eastern Greece
The port city of Thessaloniki , and the mountains and river plains of the north, have played a critical role in the history of South Eastern Europe. The Chalkidiki Peninsula is home to Mt. Athos (the Holy Mountain), a monastic state governed by the Greek Orthodox Church. Eastern Greece The plain of Attica (Attiki) was the site of Europe's first cities. Today, Attica supports nearly half the Greek population. The lush peninsula of Pelion is a land of cascading streams and beaches fringed by forests, and is topped by Mt. Pelion. The best known of eastern Greece's many mountains is

Here you will get a better idea about the geography of Greece by reading the questions and traveling long ago and far away to ancient Greece to answer them. Where on Earth is Greece? photo courtesy of Pat Taylor Greece is located on a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea. As you can see in the map above, Greece is almost completely surrounded by water. Many islands can be found around the peninsula. The large island at the bottom of the map is Crete. What does the land in Greece look like? photo courtesy of the Department of Archaeology, Boston University, Saul S. Weinberg Collection Much of Greece was rocky and barren and bad for agriculture . Most Greeks lived along the coast where the soil was good for farming. There were many mountains and valleys. The climate was hot and dry, and rainfall was limited to the winter months. With a shortage of land for farming, the Greeks came to rely upon trade with other countries for food, building supplies, and other goods. How would I get from place to place in Greece?
