The usual practice when naming a child in Greece is to use one of the grandparents' names. Ancient names from history and myth are getting more and more popular and there are many Aphrodites and Socrates around. Ancient Greeks used basic measurements. They used a finger as their basic unit. Sixteen fingers equaled one foot and twenty -four fingers equaled one foot and a half. Twenty-four fingers also equaled one Olympic cubit and so did 16 palms. The Roman later took the Greeks measurements and used them. Many Greek ceramics of the 7th-8th centuries B.C. were not found where they were produced (Boethia, Sparta, Samos), but in the Etruscan necropoli, demonstrating the intense trade between Italy and Greece already in ancient times. Greece Yesterday and Today Pericles Of Athens And The Birth Of Democracy by Donald Kagan, 1998, Free Press. The first genuine biography of Pericles written in English in over 50 years and a spirited defense of the Athenian democracy. The author presents a well thought out argument that shows the democracy preceding the Athenian-Spartan war as a rational, deliberate and moderate regime, with Pericles serving as the perfected political leader. Controversial and highly recommended.

Almost everyone in Greece, this Connecticut-sized land of ten million people, is literate. This is not surprising in a country with a history of respect for knowledge and discovery. The national anthem of Greece has 158 verses. No one in Greece has memorized all 158 verses. The Greeks were the first people in the world to play organized games, and they played them on a grand scale. All over ancient Greece there were games and athletic contests of every description from foot races, horse races, and boat races to contests in music. Greece Book and Video Selections

    Greece - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Greece is a wonderful country. It is full of many interesting places. Many are very old and very big. Some of Greece's most interesting places are huge old buildings. They were built thousands of years ago.
Greece is a peninsula. It is in southern Europe. What is a peninsula? A peninsula is a part of land that has water on three sides. The Aegean, Mediterranean, Ionian Seas surround Greece. Many islands are part of Greece. Try to imagine this: There are 1,400 islands around Greece! Some are big, like Peloponnesus. Many islands are tiny.
There are many mountains in Greece. Mount Olympus is one of them. This mountain is very important. Greeks thought that mount Olympus was the home for the gods. They believed there were many gods. They also believed that there was a king of all the gods. His name was Zeus.
One of Greece's hills is also very famous. It is called the Acropolis. The Acropolis is in Athens. Athens is one of Greece's largest cities. The Greeks built a huge building on top of the Acropolis. It was called the Parthenon. The Parthenon was a temple, which was a place for people to worship gods.
