    Greece's Geography
    Mountains, Plains and Sea

Greece serves as a point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet.
Serving as the junction of the major cultural currents, the country effectively became the crossroads for people of all regions, who themselves impacted the landscape. During the ancient period, the island was wracked by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and winter storms, resulting in craggy landscapes and rich, fertile soils. See a map of Greece . See a map of Crete.
The landscape of Crete: Three mountain ranges form a sort of spine stretching across the island of Crete. In western Crete, the Lefka Ori or White Mountains occupy a large area within the prefecture of Chania and contain more than 40 peaks over 2,000 metres high. The highes t peak in this area is Pahnes, at 2,452 metres above sea level. The Idi or Psiloritis Range in the centre of the island contains the highest peak in Crete, Mount Idi (Psiloritis) at 2,456 metres above sea level. At the eastern end of the island are the Dikte Mountains with several peaks above 2,000 metres high. The same geological forces that created the mountain ranges also created awe-inspiring gorges throughout the island. Faragi Samarias (Samaria Gorge) is the most famous with a length of 16km, making it the longest gorge in Europe as well as one of the most impressive thousands of tourists take the 6- to 7- hour walk every year. Another less well-known gorge is the Faragi Imbrou (Imbros Gorge) that begins at the plain of Imbros and ends at the Libyan Sea beside Hora Sfakion. The Kotsifou Gorge and the Kourtaliotiko Faragi (Kourtaliotiko Gorge) are only a few kilometres away from one another, near Plakias in the prefecture of Rethimnon. In the western part of Crete there is also the Faragi Agias Irinis and in eastern Crete, the Kilada ton Nekron (Valley of Death), named because of the Minoan graves found there. Crete also has 155 km of sandy beaches along its coastline.

    GEOGRAPHY OF GREECE
Greece is situated in the south of the Balkan Peninsula , and borders with Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Skopia. The landmass of Greece is just over 131,000 sq km. It has a huge coastline of over 13,000 km and not a single area in Greece is over 100km from the sea. Greece consists of a Peninsula, and about 1400 islands, of which just over 160 are inhabited.
Most of Greece is mountainous and the majority of land is at an altitude of 1500m above sea level. The highest mountain in Greece is Mount Olympus , of which its peak is 2,917m.
Due to the mountainous environment and the dry climate in Greece, agriculture is occupied by only a quarter of the land. Only about 8% of land is used permanently for growing crops.
However, Greece has great natural resources in the forms of oil, magnesite, petroleum, bauxite, lignite and marble. There is also

    GEOGRAPHY
Table of Contents Chronological Diagram Back T he study region encloses the upper drainage basin of the Nemea River which flows north into the Gulf of Corinth. The Nemea Valley is one of three valleys defining the Corinthia. The valley to the east is drained by the Longopotamos River and contains the ancient city state of Kleonai. To the west is the valley of the Asopos River. The valley was the site of the ancient city state of Phlious and the modern town of New Nemea (formerly Ayios Yioryios [St. George]). The NVAP region is strategically located controlling entry into the heart of the Peloponnesos. The study area includes the Tretos Pass (photo, below left, and map above). Here the modern national highway and railway line traverse from the Corinthia south into the Argolis. It also includes the Kelossa Pass (photo, below right, and map above), which leads from the Asopos Valley southeast into the Argolid. Thus NVAP geographically embraces a valley and its periphery and thereby enabled the researchers to pursue the goals of studying human settlement and land use within its borders in relation to adjacent areas as well as to regions further beyond its borders.
