Greece , formally called the Hellenic Republic, is a country in the southeast of Europe on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula. The waters of the Aegean Sea border on Greece to the east, and those of the Ionian and Mediterranean Seas to the west and south. Regarded by many as the cradle of Western civilization, Greece has a long and rich history during which it spread its influence over three continents. About 80% of Greece is mountainous or hilly. Much of the country is dry and rocky; only 28% of the land is arable. Western Greece contains lakes and wetlands. Pindus, the central mountain range, has an average elevation of 2,650 m. Mount Olympus forms the highest point in Greece at 2,911 m above sea level. Greece's climate features mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Temperatures rarely reach extremes, although snowfalls do occur in the mountains and occasionally even in Athens in the winter. Seals, sea turtles and other rare marine life can be seen in Greek seas, while Greece's forests provide a home to Western Europe's last brown bears and lynx.

According to both Plato and Aristotle, most Athenian boys were sent off to school at age seven. Before then, boys and girls were raised together within the home. At seven, the lives of the sexes separated, and boys began their formal education outside of the oikos . Plato tells us in Laws that at ten, boys should study literature for three years, then study music and the lyre for three more years (7.810A; Golden, 20). In Politics , Aristotle presents us with a slightly different account of a boy's schooling. He tells us that it should be divided into two halves: prior to hebe
A boy from a wealthier family would be accompanied to school by a paidagogos , or family slave, who was in charge of overseeing his education and basic discipline (figure 1). The paidagogos also served as the boy's representative at school, making sure that he was treated well and that he received the education his father was paying for. Paidagogoi were highly trusted slaves who occupied a privileged place within the household. However, despite their positions as boys' representatives at school

Attendance at Primary Education ( Dimotiko ) lasts for six years, and children are admitted at the age of 6. Along with the regular kindergartens ( Nipiagogeia ) and the Dimotika , All-day primary schools are in operation, with an extended timetable and an enriched Curriculum.
Post-compulsory Secondary Education, according to the reform of 1997, consists of two school types: Eniaia Lykeia (Unified Upper Secondary Schools) and the Technical Vocational Educational Schools ( TEE ). The duration of studies in

, a bitter enemy and rival of Sparta. The two represent diametrically opposed concepts of the Greek polis and its relations with other city-states; they also represent diametrically opposed concepts of the individual's relationship to the state. Despite all the rhetoric in Athens and in the European historical tradition, we should keep in mind that the Spartans believed they lived in the best of all Greek worlds, and many of their Greek neighbors agreed with them. The rivalry, then, between Sparta and Athens, which would erupt into a disastrous war for Athens, was also an ideological and cultural rivalry.
ten to one , it was only a matter of time before this subject population would overrun their conquerors. So the Spartans invented a new political system as dramatically revolutionary as Athenian democracy in the north: they turned their state into what amounts to a military state.
helots . We describe their lives as the life of a "serf," for they worked small plots of land on estates owned by Spartans; part of their produce went to the master of the estate, and the remainder went to the helot farmer and his family. There's no question that the life of the helots was a miserable life. Labor was long and hard and the helots always lived right on the border of subsistence.
perioeci , or "dwellers around or about." These were foreign people who served as a kind of buffer population between the Spartans and the helots. Because of this vital function, they were accorded a great deal of freedom. Most of the trade and commerce carried out in Sparta were performed by the
