Education
Further, individual education has an advantage over education in common, as individual medical treatment has; for while in general rest and abstinence from food are good for a man in a fever, for a particular man they may not be; and a boxer presumably does not prescribe the same style of fighting to all his pupils. It would seem, then, that the detail is worked out with more precision if the care is particular to individuals; for each person is more likely to get what suits his case.
Nicomachean Ethics , Bk. 10, 1180b
Well, have you any against the laws which deal with children's upbringing and education, such as you had yourself? Are you not grateful to those of us laws which were instituted for this end, for requiring your father to give you a cultural and physical education?
Crito
This is the way I see the true statesman dealing with those who rear and educate children according to the educational laws. He keeps the power of direction to himself. The only form of training he will permit is the one by which the educator produces the type of character fitted for his own task of weaving the web of state. He bids the educator encourage the young in these activities and no others. Some pupils cannot be taught to be courageous and moderate and to acquire the other virtuous tendencies, but are impelled to godlessness and to vaunting pride and injustice by the drive of an evil nature. These the king expels from the community. He puts them to death or banishes them or else he chastises them by the severest public disgrace.

Education of Women in Ancient Greece
Women were educated at home except for music and dance lessons. Often they were educated by their husbands, brothers, or fathers and some greek women were very well educated. Hetaera had special schools where they learned entertaining, conversation, and rhetoric. Slaves were not educated. If they were educated before they became slaves, they could work for their freedom. Boys were educated in schools; girls were educated at home. Boys learned grammar, rhetoric, dialectic - these were meant to help students communicate effectively, and included a study of literature and language - arithmetic, music, geometry and astronomy. Girls were taught weaving and other household chores, dancing, music, and physical education. Girls intended to be hetaerae were educated in schools where they also learned grammar, rhetoric, and dialectic. In fact Greek women seem to have been the best educated women of any culture up until fairly recently into the 19th century. Culture involves skills that are passed on by education and training and are devloped by discipline and practice. Women have always been involved with their own culture related to the family and child rearing. But they have always been involved in early childhood education as well. In many societies they are involved in later aspects of education as well. In ancient Greece the separation of women emphasized a separate women's culture with special religious holidays and festivals.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK E ducation in Greece is centralized and controlled by the state. Higher education is provided by university-level institutions called anotata ekpedeutika idrimata (AEI) and technical-education institutes known as anotera ekpedeutica idrimata (TEI). Greek law permits the establishment of privately owned nursery, primary and secondary schools (all of which are required to follow the national curriculum). However, the Constitution expressly forbids the establishment of private, degree-granting institutions of higher education. Greek higher education has a binary structure composed of the university sector (22 AEIs) and the technological sector (15 TEIs). In 1997-98, 30 optional study programs were introduced to provide greater flexibility for students. These programs offer courses that can be taken individually or in combination, and are designed to better meet the needs of the changing labor market. TEIs are governed by the Laws of 1983 and 1985, which saw the introduction of new courses and the extension of the average length of programs to four years. The AEIs are governed by the Law of 1992 and subsequent amendments.
