But don't expect a visit there to be a sober study of the ancient world - the Greek propensity for partying dates back to Dionysus. From smoggy Athens to blindingly bright islands, ancient fragments abound - the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and even, quite possibly, the remnants of Atlantis at Santorini.

Obelisks and fountains - Greek culture in Hellenistic Egypt
This is a lecture about Greek culture but I thought I'd start here in the United States. I have two exhibits which I want to draw to your attention - one from the East Coast and one from the West. First, from New York I start with the great obelisk Alexandria, lies on the northern coast of Egypt , looking northwards back to old Greece across the Aegean. It was founded by Alexander of Macedon in 332 BC in the course of his conquest of the Persian empire, and in choosing this site for a new Egyptian capital, Alexander was well aware of the potential of its position. The foundation of Alexandria took a traditional form and, as in Greek colonial foundations of an earlier date, the agora or market-place was designed as the centre of the city. Here temples were planned - for the Greek gods and for Isis, the Egyptian goddess. This last, I think, is important. Alexandria in most respects was a typical Greek city foundation, but the inclusion from the start of a temple for the goddess Isis was a symbolic act. In his new foundation Alexander was setting the scene for continued Greek rule of Egypt; he was also, from the start, practising an inclusive policy in relation to that country's gods.

THE RESTITUTION OF THE PARTHENON MARBLES

In 1999 a team of Greek experts visited the British Museum in order to examine the extent of the damage done to the surface of the Parthenon Marbles, during the cleaning of 1937-1938. Following this, the British Museum organized an international conference in London ("Cleaning the Parthenon Sculptures", 30 November - 1 December 1999) in order to examine the issues concerning the conservation of the Parthenon Sculptures; the results of the Greek experts' visit to the British Museum were presented among others during this conference. During the same year, the British Government assigned the Committee on Culture, Media and Sport to consider all the issues relevant to British cultural heritage polices. The Greek request for the return of the Parthenon Marbles was among the examined issues.

Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Search within this book at Google Print Athens dominates textbook accounts of ancient Greece. But was it, for the Greeks themselves, a model city-state or a creative, even a corrupt, departure from the model? Or was there a model? This book reveals Epizephyrian Locria Greek colony on the Adriatic coast of Italyas a third way in Greek culture, neither Athens nor Sparta. Drawing on a wide range of literary and archaeological evidence, James Redfield offers a fascinating account of this poorly understood Greek city-state, and in particular the distinctive role of women and marriage therein. Redfield devotes much of the book to placing Locri within a more general account of Greek culture, particularly with the institution of marriage in relation to private property, sexual identity, and the fate of the soul. He begins by considering the annual practice of sending two maidens from old-world Locris, the putative place of origin of the Italian Locrians, to serve in the temple of Athena at Ilion, finding here some key themes of Locrian culture. He goes on to provide a richly detailed overview of the Italian city; in a set of iconographic essays he suggests that marriage was seen in Locri as a life transformation akin to the eternal bliss hoped for after death.
