TRAVELLING to Greece
Greece lies at the meeting point of Asia, Africa and Europe. Today, it has c. 11 million inhabitants. 4 million are living in the capital area, Athens . Greeks of the Diaspora are estimated to some millions. Greek language is also spoken in Cyprus by its c.500.000 greek citizens. Coming to greece? Here are some links and my own tips about Athens and other places in Greece, books, museums, news and gateways. Best month to come to Greece is September: July and August can be too hot for you (occasional heat waves), and islands are packed (all 4 million Athenians spend their summer vacation there in August). Most greeks understand a bit of english, all you need in greek is:

Names of the Greeks The Hellenistic period of Greek history was the period between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the annexation of the Greek peninsula and islands by Rome in 146 BC . Although the establishment of Roman rule did not break the continuity of Hellenistic society and culture, which remained essentially unchanged until the advent of Christianity , it did mark the end of Greek political independence. During the Hellenistic period the importance of "Greece proper" (that is, the territory of modern Greece) within the Greek-speaking world declined sharply. The great centres of Hellenistic culture were Alexandria and Antioch , capitals of Ptolemaic Egypt and Seleucid Syria respectively. See Hellenistic civilization for the history of Greek culture outside of Greece in this period.

Ancient History One of the great civilizations in the world during the 4th and 3d millennium BC was the Minoan culture of Crete . The Minoan culture is divided in three periods: old, middle and late. The old period was synchronized with the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There were connections between the two cultures through trade, and these influences can be found in the art in both Crete and Egypt. During the middle period, about 1900 BC , the great palaces of Knossos and Phaestos were built. There are debates whether these buildings were housing kings or priests, but it is thought there was a religious association to them. The Great Goddess, perhaps called Rhea was worshipped, and her priests and priestesses had the highest position in the society. During the second millennium BC a series of natural catastrophies plagued the Minoan civilization. At 1700 BC there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed the old palaces, and a second one occurred at about 1450 BC destroying most of the buildings of that time. The Volcano at

T he Eastern Mediterranean was one of the first cradles of mankind. Not only modern man (Homo sapiens sapiens) but his predecessors Neanderthal man (Homo sapiens neanderthalenis) and Homo erectus settled early on the coasts, islands and inland regions of this area of the globe, so favored by nature.
By the last phase of the Neolithic era (up to about 2000 BC), the Eastern Mediterranean area was densely populated, in comparison to general population levels at that time, by peoples racially akin to each other; they could be described in a word as "Mediterraneans" and should be considered the truly indigenous population of the area.
T owns, large and small, have been discovered to date in Lesbos. The oldest ruins date back to 3200-3100 BC. In Thermi, which has been systematically excavated by W. Lamb, five towns were unearthed, one on top of the other. They represent the time period from 3200 to 2400 BC. The first three correspond to Troy I and the other two to Troy II. Only in the most recent level have traces of fortifications been found. They were perhaps build out of the people of Central Asia, who had begun to constitute a threat as they approached the coasts and nearby islands.
T he next thousand years could well be called a dark age, because, for the time being at least no archeological evidence of it has come to light, nor are there any references to it in literature. It should be noted that excavations in Lesbos are still in their early stages: the future may, very probably, bring

About Us
Advertise Contact Us General Health Information From Greece101 Staff Article Tools Print this article Email to a friend There are a myriad of health problems that can arise on a vacation although the likelihood of any of them happening are slim. Staying healthy while vacationing depends on proactive steps before departure and smart choices while traveling. Ensure that you are in good health before traveling and that you have no serious health problems. Make sure your immunizations are up-to-date. There are no legal immunizations for entry except if you are coming from a yellow fever infected area in which case you will need to show a certificate of vaccination. While traveling it's always safe to update your tetanus, diphtheria, polio, and hepatitis A vaccinations. If you plan on doing lots of traveling in remote areas where you have a higher likelihood of coming into contact with animals, it is best to get a rabies vaccination. Check your health insurance. Find out if you are covered in emergencies or for standard care. Most plans will reimburse you for serious emergency care, although you will have to pay for it up front out of your own pocket. Non-EU citizens are allowed basic treatment at hospital emergency rooms. If you do not feel adequately covered invest in travel insurance. If you are traveling from an EU country you are entitled to free medical care after presenting an E111 form, available at most post offices. Your "free care" will be of the most minimal variety in public medical facilities. If you choose to be treated in a private facility the cost is equivalent to any private facility in Europe, although for Americans even private treatment will seem reasonably priced compared to U.S. health care prices.

Sabine MacCormack Stanford University L some attitude toward our two questions underlies those divergent views. Regarding origins, let me start with one of those playful yet serious anecdotes Plato was so fond of telling. In the Timaeus Timaeus of God and man, of space, time, and eternity. Influences and borrowings moving from one culture to another are of course a worldwide phenomenon. What I wish to highlight here is the interest that Greek and Roman mythographers, philosophers, and historians repeatedly demonstrated in taking stock of cultural imports. Their preoccupation with this issue shows that otherness was part and parcel of Greek and especially of Roman cultural self-definition. This is not to say that the Romans, like the Greeks before them, did not often experience and act on xenophobia. Nonetheless, they did not choose to rewrite their history in such a way as to eliminate the memory of foreign contributions. Indeed, ongoing foreign contributions served to document a certain connectedness, a sense of cultural belonging and identity on the map of human achievements that the inhabitants of the Roman Mediterranean world carried in their minds. In the field of education, however, the Romans did not look beyond Greece. Young Romans studied a corpus of Greek and Latin epic poetry, history, philosophy, and political oratory that changed little between the first and the fifth centuries CE. Some Greek classics were translated into Latin, but we know of few translations from languages other than Greek. The most important of these is the Hebrew Bible, which was, however, translated for Jewish and Christian religious use, and not for any cultural or educational purpose that was recognized as valid in Roman society at large. We are thus faced with a dichotomy in Greek and Roman attitudes to cultural identity and education. While cultural identity was delineated in relation to landmarks on a farflung canvas of earlier civilizations, in education what counted was the authority of Greek and Roman authors.
