The EU has also been at the heart of Greek foreign policy and although Greece has occasionally found itself at odds with its partners on a number of important issues, it has derived important dividends from this approach. One of these has been a slow but steady improvement in relations with Turkey, which itself aspires to EU membership: despite common membership of NATO, bilateral relations between Turkey and Greece have historically been among the worst between any two European countries. The principal causes are the continuing division of Cyprus (see Cyprus
Greece also keeps a wary eye on the Balkan states to its north. Independence for the Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia (FYROM) was initially blocked by Greece before a complete settlement between the two countries was agreed in 1995 (see

Sfakia - Intro
Picture Galleries Accommodations About us ... What's New?
Culture of Crete
We, Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. We are in love with its spirit which evolved from vivacious Minoan times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and civilizations, the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through the "rizitika" folk songs; it resides in plant motifs of ancient earthenware; it characterizes the way a shepherd drives its flock of sheep to the slopes of the Sfakian mountains; it is diffused in the aroma of "diktamos" herb and adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small country church, a handgun passed in it's belt...
FAMOUS CRETANS
NIKOLAOS KAZANTZAKIS One of the most significant Greek novelists, poets, drama writers and scholars. He was born in Heraklio, in 1833 and studied Law in Athens and Philosophy in Paris. He was influenced by the theories of Ion Dragoumis and Eleftherios Venizelos. His trip to Russia in 1919, acting as General Manager of the Ministry of Welfare, was the introduction of his exciting odyssey: Vienna, Berlin, Italy, Crete, Russia, Cyprus, Spain, Egypt, mount Sinah, Goethesgub (Tsechoslovakia), Nice (France). He died in Germany, in 1957. His first novel was "The Snake and the Lilly", in 1906, followed by "Foreman", "Ascetic Life", the translation of Dante's "Divina Comedy". His prime was evident by the works "Life of Alexis Zorbas", "Christ is crossed again", "Captain Michael", "The Last Temptation", "God's Poor Man" and "Reference to Greco".

The Directorate of the Archive of Monuments and Publications is one of the six central Departments of the General Directorate of Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture . The Archive of Monuments has two primary responsibilities: a) the protection and documentation of the Historic Archive of the Archaeological Service and b) the creation and maintenance of a National Archive of Monuments. The Historic Archive of the Archaeological Service contains administrative documents pertaining to the work of the Service and dates from 1833. The Hellenic Archaeological Service, the official governmental body charged with the protection and preservation of antiquities, coordinates all archaeological activity in Greece. As a result, this archive provides a unique record of all the important actions undertaken by the Greek State for the protection and preservation of Greek antiquities and covers many areas of interest for the study of the history of archaeology, and the development of the discipline from the formative years of the country to the present day. The Archive of Monuments has undertaken the organisation, documentation and protection of this major archive, with the aim of making it accessible to the international scientific community. Our department has already collected the various sections of the archive, and has commenced the cataloguing of the contents of the archive and the conservation of its contents.
