Among the heights are large ski resorts and mineral spas, quaint traditional villages, monasteries, and many opportunities for hiking, cave exploration and ecotourism. Pamporovo See full resort guide A modern ski resort in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains, Pamporovo is the sunniest Bulgarian winter resort situated at an altitude of 5,413ft (1,650m) and has wonderful snow throughout the season. The unique Mediterranean climate is extremely healthy and provides excellent conditions for climatic therapy and health tourism all year round. A Balneological Centre operates from within the resort. Pamporovo provides a variety of excellent ski runs for all degrees of difficulty, most of them starting from the Snejanka peak above the resort. The ski school centre is one of the best in Europe with highly qualified instructors and an international reputation. Off the slopes there are numerous opportunities for entertainment and interesting tourist attractions; the Rhodope Mountains have long been the source of legends and stories, including the mythical singer Orpheus, and the region is interesting for its folk traditions and culture.

Herodotus and the North Carolina Oral Narrative Tradition
Philip Stadter (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
[Editor's Note: See also the response by John Marincola As scholars who live among books, we find it difficult to imagine the cultural world and the intellectual activity of people to whom books represented a very small part of their way of knowing the world, and a relatively new way to communicate with others or to preserve one's knowledge. In studying the beginnings of literature in the Greek world, our focus has been on the development of the epic tradition and its fixation in written texts, and more recently on the culture that lies behind the creation and performance of lyric poetry and elegy. The oral pre-history of Greek prose has been relatively neglected, although the work of Aly early in the century and of others like Lang, Murray, Thomas, and Evans on oral tradition and Herodotus in the last decade have indicated more work to be done. However we are still far from placing Herodotus and his work securely in their cultural milieu. It is here where I believe some comparative study of the quite different narrative tradition of the North Carolina mountains can be helpful. Recent work on early Greek oral tradition has been especially influenced by the work of Vansina and Finnegan on African oral traditions.

A proposal for life, combining culture, sport, education and recreation in anintegral whole, as this found expression in ancient Greek culture.
http://www.sport.gov.gr/2/2z/2z07/e2z071.html
The Olympic Spirit is an unwritten law. It can not be codified, listed of described. It can only be experienced. The Olympic Youth Festival will help young athletes experience the Olympic Spirit at the place where it was born - one of the most holy places on earth. A new institution, pure like youth, which can resist the harsh pragmatism of the modern world. A proposal for life, combining culture, sport, education and recreation in an integral whole, as this found expression in ancient Greek culture. A proposal for life dedicated to youth, the future and glory of our world. The objective of the Olympic Youth Festival is to disseminate the ideals of Olympism among young athletes the world over. Future Olympic winners will meet every four years in a sports, educational and cultural celebration in the sacred precincts of Ancient Olympia. The hosting of the Olympic Youth Festival, at the dawn of the new millennium, will be a unique stimulus for the dissemination of the values of Olympism and for the reinforcement of its contribution to humanity. The election of Athens as host city of the 2004 Olympic Games provides a superb opportunity to link the modern Olympic Games to their rich historical tradition.

The city of Kastoria is built in a peninsula surrounded by the lake Orestiada and has 16,000 inhabitants. Lake Orestiada has been announced a Monument of National Beauty by the Ministry of Culture. At the lakeshore there are parks and recreation areas. The natural basin of the lake which is enclosed by mountains of excellent geomorphology, constitutes a unique hydrobiotope. It maintains a rich birds fauna, which includes rare and menaced species. In the lake there are great quantities of various fish species and offers the possibility of fishing, both with the traditional boats in the deep waters and with fishing rods on the lake shores. Kastoria and the surrounding area are internationally known as the centers of manufacturing and trading of furs. Fur manufacturing dates back more than a thousant years and the economic activity of the prefecture centers around furs. Every year an international fur exhibition takes place in Kastoria.

Reproduced, with permission, from the Annual Review of Entomology,
Dr. Hogue's article includes definitions literature and language music and the performing arts graphic and plastic arts ... conclusion , and acknowledgements Dr. Hogue contributed much to the field of cultural entomology. His definitive work, entitled "Cultural Entomology," was published in the 1987 Annual Review of Entomology. This work exposed the full scope of subjects included within the fields of cultural entomology and made available a fabulous bibliographic listing. DEFINITIONS
Humans spend their intellectual energies in three basic areas of activity: surviving, using practical learning (the application of technology); seeking pure knowledge through inductive mental processes (science); and pursuing enlightenment to taste a pleasure by aesthetic exercises that may be referred to as the "humanities." Entomology has long been concerned with survival (economic or applied entomology) and scientific study (academic entomology), but the branch of investigation that addresses the influence of insects (and other terrestrial Arthropoda, including arachnids, myriapods, etc) in literature, language, music, the arts, interpretive history, religion, and recreation has only recently been recognized as a distinct field. This is referred to as "cultural entomology". Because the term "cultural" is narrowly defined, some aspects normally included in studies of human societies are excluded. Thus ethnoentomology, which is concerned with all forms of insect- human interactions in so-called primitive societies, is not synonymous with cultural entomology. For this reason, entomophagy as practiced to complete the regular diet of an Indian tribe is considered applied entomology and is not covered here; however, where entomophagy occurs for recreation or ceremonial reasons, it assumes a place in the subject of this paper. Likewise, pharmacological, manufacturing, or other wholly practical uses of insects, even though unusual, such as applications in forensic science, are not part of the subject. The narrative history of the science of entomology is not part of cultural entomology, while the influence of insects on general history would be considered cultural entomology.
