JPL News T hanks to the generosity of Caltech alum Mike Scott, 24 undergraduate and graduate students were able to take a two week field trip to Greece and Turkey from September 2-16, 1999. We were able to see a wide variety of very recent geologic phenomena and learn about the history and culture of these two fascinating countries. The trip was organized by Caltech professor Kerry Sieh . We are very thankful to our local guides in Greece: Dr. Dimitris Papanastassiou (National Observatory of Athens) and Dr. Kaliopi Gaki-Papanastassiou (University of Athens); and in Turkey: Dr. Aykut Barka (Istanbul Technical University) and Dr. Erhan Altunel (Osmangazi University). Olympia
Above is a map of the city of Olympia (clickable) Olympia is a city at the western coast of the Pelloponnes. It was a normal city, like New York, but it had something special. The Olympics. Olympia had two parts: The city and the Olympics field above on a mountain. It was for women forbidden to see the Olympics. Once there was a women who tried to see them. See clothed herself like a trainer and looked at the matches of her son. When son won a match, she shouted like a woman and the men of Olympia killed her. From that time not only the participens but also the trainers and visitors weren't allowed to wear clothes. Temple of Zeus The Temple of Zeus, completed in 456 BC, was one of the largest temples in Greece (64m long and 28m width), and perhaps the most renowned example of Doric architecture in the Classical world. Today, none of the columns remain standing; earthquakes have taken their toll, and after the early Christian era, Olympia was abandoned to the flooding of the Peneus River. The building held six columns on each end, with thirteen on the flanks, and, except for the sculpted elements, was built entirely of local shell limestone. Temple of Hera During the 7th century, one of the very earliest monumental Greek temples was built here, originally a temple to both Zeus and Hera. But later, after the establishment of the great Temple of Zeus, it served Hera alone. In the 7th century, the temple was made of wood, but gradually was replaced in stone. The surviving capitals date to every period, from the late 7th century to Roman times. At the west end of the cella stood the archaic sculptures of Zeus and Hera, and the head of Hera has been recovered in the excavations. Here also was found the famous Hermes, sculpted by Praxiteles.

Having exported chaos, drama, tragedy and democracy before most nations stayed up late enough to want souvlaki, Greece boasts an unrivalled legacy. But don't expect a visit there to be a sober study of the ancient world - the Greek propensity for partying dates back to Dionysus.
From smoggy Athens to blindingly bright islands, ancient fragments abound - the belly button of the cosmos at Delphi, fallen columns galore on the sacred island of Delos, frescoed Minoan palaces on Crete and even, quite possibly, the remnants of Atlantis at Santorini
Greeks are fierce guardians of tradition, but that doesn't mean they don't know how to have fun. In addition, hot sun and limpid seas conspire to make Greece a perfect place to relax. Whether you're supping in a beachside taverna, sipping coffee in a shady plateia or disco-dancing till dawn, chances are the gods already have you ensnared.

Greek Dark Ages
, the Greeks lived in small tribal units; some of these small tribes were sedentary and agricultural and some were certainly nomadic. They had abandoned their cities between 1200 and 1100 BC for reasons that remain shrouded in mystery; the Greeks believed that a cataclysmic and ferocious invasion of northern Greek barbarians, the Dorians, had wiped out the Mycenean civilization. In reality, the decline and abandonment of urbanization in Greece was probably due to a combination of economic collapse and pressure from northern migrations. Greek life during the "Dark Ages" wasn't dark; it was, in fact, a culturally creative period. This period gave the Greeks the religion their religion, mythology, and foundational history in their final forms; the close of the Dark Ages would also gave the Greeks the rudiments of their greatest political achievement: the polis , or "city-state."

Travel Guide to Thessaloniki: Greece's Hippest City
Thessaloniki has given Greece some of its greatest musicians, artists, poets and thinkers. It has some of the most beautiful beaches and has some of the finest hotels and best restaurants in northern Greece.
I have always loved Thessaloniki. Its a very different city from Athens but no less sophisticated and (some might say) culturally superior. The influence of the east is more pronounced, not just in the delicious food, but in the relaxed lifestyle. Thessaloniki is a big city with an almost college town feel, like Boston or Austin, but Greek. The nightlife in Thessaloniki is exceptional, the bars and clubs play great music. The restaurants and ouzeries are among the best in Greece. There are many cinemas showing first-run English language films. The city is also the site of the renown Thessaloniki Film Festival in October-November. The women, considered the most chic in Greece, support a high-fashion industry that rivals Athens so if you like to shop for clothes, shoes and jewelry you will be quite happy here. There are not a large number of ancient ruins within the city but there are enough

http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/GREECE/homepg.html
Welcome to Greece! When you look at the night sky you see constellations named for heroes and heroines of ancient Greek mythology - Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Orion, and Perseus. You may live near a city that takes its name from ancient Greece like Athens in Texas, Georgia, or New York. Nashville, Tennessee calls itself the "Athens of the South" and is home to an exact replica of the Parthenon , the 5th-century BC Greek temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Their NFL team is even called the Tennessee Titans, named for the first of the ancient Greek gods. One of our most significant human accomplishments - manned flight to the moon - was named for the Greek god Apollo. The center of American government and well-known American national monuments look back to the buildings of ancient Greece. Why are we fascinated with ancient Greece? Greek culture - its myths, theater, architecture, and sports - has influenced and inspired people for centuries, even millennia! We see the evidence of ancient Greece around us every day - in the constellations we identify in the heavens or the Olympic games held every four years; in the stories we tell and in the movies we see; in the architecture of our houses, churches, and public buildings and in our democratic system of government.
