The ancient Greeks (mainly the Athenians ) were a unique people. They believed that individuals should be free as long as they acted within the laws of Greece. This allowed them the opportunity to excel in any direction they chose. Individuality, as the Greeks viewed it, was the basis of their society. The ability to strive for excellence, no matter what the challenge, was what the Athenians so dearly believed in. This strive for excellence was the method from which they achieved such phenomenal accomplishments. These accomplishments astound us to this day. They also believed in the balance of mind and body. Although many of them strove to become soldiers and athletes , others ventured into philosophy, drama pottery and the arts . The two most important concepts which the ancient Greeks followed were found inscribed on the great shrine of Delphi, which read "Nothing in excess" and "Know thyself". This philosophy greatly impacted the Greek civilization. Athens was the intellectual center of Greece. It was one of the first city-states of its time, and is still world renowned as one of the most famous cities in the world. It was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the city's patron. In 508 BC, Athens became one of the first societies in ancient times to establish democracy. Democracy came from the Greek words

Cities ATHENS, SPARTA , AND THEBES Cities in ancient Greece were of all shapes and sizes. They also have all different populations. The main city or capitol of Greece as Athens. SPARTA Sparta is located in southern Greece. The city is protected on three sides by mountains. It was one of the most powerful city-states in all of Greece. Women owned two fifths of the entire city. If a spartan citizen could not pay his taxes, his family lost their home and their citizenship. Sparta was famous throughout Greece for it's military power and loyalty of it's soldiers. Children that were unhealthy or would not make a good soldier were left in the mountains to die. The healthy boys were taken to train for the Spartan Military at age seven. For the Spartan Soldiers it was the highest honor to die defending his country. The Spartan Slaves were called Helots. They were taken over by the Spartan Military. Every year, the Spartans declared war on the Helots to eliminate the sick and weak without breaking murder laws. ATHENS Athens was the capital of Greece. It was built on an acropolis or rocky hill. Acropolis means "High city" because it stood above all others. It was one of the first city-states in Greece. The first king of Athens was Cecrops. After a brutal war with the Persians, Athens began to rebuild the city. One of their highest achievements was the Parthenon, a marble temple for the goddess Athena. They also built a great outdoor theater. By 1,200 B.C. Athens had a wall around most of the acropolis. in 431 B.C. the war with the Peloponesian interrupted the construction of the temple Propylaea. They never finished. Athens was a city that will always be remembered in history.

Greece A nation located in southeastern Europe, which the capital is the city of Athens , with a long history and tradition, as far back as thousands of years BC. Greek-speaking Achaeans invaded the Greek peninsula from central Europe circa 2000 BC, displacing and enslaving the Pelasgians (aboriginal non-Greek inhabitants of Greece, Asia Minor and the Aegean Islands). The earliest highly developed civilization in the Aegean area was the Minoan civilization of Crete (c. 3000-1400 BC) which spread to the mainland and gave rise to the Mycenean civilization (c. 1400-1200 BC). This is the heroic age described by Homer. This civilization was destroyed (c. 1200 BC) by the Dorians, the second great wave of Greek-speaking invaders from the north, who increased the migrations to the islands and to Asia Minor. The early tribal settlements developed (1000-700 BC) into small independent city-states. Growing populations and a shortage of land led to overseas colonization on the coast of the Black Sea, in Sicily and in the western Mediterranean (c. 750-500 BC). By 500 BC most cities were governed by oligarchies or democracies. In spite of their shared language, the city-states remained divided and developed separately, with Athens and Sparta emerging as the leading powers. The Greek cities of Asia Minor, which had been absorbed into the Lydian and Persian empires during the 6th century BC, revolted (499 BC) and were crushed, despite help from Athens. This led to the Persian Wars (499-449 BC), in which Persia invaded European Greece and was defeated at Marathon (490 BC) and Plataea (479 BC), the Persian fleet being crushed at Salamis (480 BC).

Agriculture in Europe
Civilization came to Europeans later than it did to people in West Asia, North Africa, India and China. It was preceded by agriculture and the raising of animals, which appeared in sunny Greece as early as 6000 BCE - around the time that people there built stone walls around their villages, presumably to protect themselves from wild animals and marauding outsiders. In the coming thousand years, farming spread from Greece into the colder southern Balkans . Between 5000 and 4000 BCE it spread up the Danube River into central Europe, along the Rhine River , the Netherlands Gaul and finally into what is now Switzerland . During these times, Europeans used digging sticks and hoes made of wood. They had stone axes with a sharpened and polished edge, and they had stone knives for reaping their crops. They used ornamented pottery. And where wood was plentiful they built log homes - as large as thirty by forty meters. By 4000 BCE, Europeans were using a wooden plow, and, sometime after 4000, farming spread to people around the

1000 BCE : Greece - The earliest known prehistoric civilizations occupy the Aegean world. This period marks the rise and fall of the MINOAN and MYCENAEAN civilization. 2200 BCE : Greece - Indo-European invaders, speaking the earliest forms of Greek, enter the mainland of Greece, and the MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION (named after the leading Greek city on the peninsula from 1200 BCE ) emerges. 1500 BCE : Greece - MINOAN CIVILIZATION (named after the Cretan ruler Minos) reaches its height with its central power in Knossos on the island of Crete. This culture is apparently more female-oriented and peaceful than others at the time. 1400 BCE : Greece - MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION replaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION after the destruction of Knossos. Bronze weapons, war-scenes on art, Cyclopean defence walls, and the fact that male warriors were buried with their weapons provide evidence for the claim that the Mycenaeans were militaristic. The horse-drawn chariot emerges around this time. The Mycenaeans dominate the Aegean world for about 200 years. 1250 BCE : Greece - Though this is disputed, some scholars believe that the

http://uranus.ee.auth.gr/new/eng/thessaloniki.html
Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece with a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It stretches over twelve kilometers in a bowl formed by low hills facing a bay that opens into the Gulf Thermaikos. It was founded about 315 B.C., on a site of old prehistoric settlements going back to 2300 B.C., by Cassander, King of Macedonia, and was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander The Great . Since then, Thessaloniki has become the chief city of Macedonia and its most important commercial port. In Roman times it was visited by Saint Paul, who preached the new religion, and who later addressed his two well-known epistles (the oldest written documents of Christian literature) to the Christians of Thessaloniki.
The Byzantine times
In Byzantine times, Thessaloniki became a cultural and artistic centre second only to Constantinople in the whole empire. Great names are closely associated with the city's Byzantine past - the jurist Peter Magister, the epigrammatist Macedonius Hypatus, the Hymnographer Archbishop Joseph, Leo the Mathematician, the historian John Cameniates, the prolific Homeric scholar and humanist Eustathius ( Archbishop of Thessaloniki), the philologist Thomas M. Magister, the teacher of law and editor of the "Hexabiblus" Constantine Armenopoulos, the theologian Gregory Palamas ( Archbishop of Thessaloniki), to mention but a few prominent scholars. The missionary brothers Cyril and Methodius also have a special place in the history of the period; they invented and used the Cyrillic Alphabet to bring literacy and Christianity to the Slavs.

ATHENS City Overview
Athens ( Athina ) is named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom, who, according to legend, won the city after defeating Poseidon in a duel. The goddess’ victory was celebrated by the construction of a temple on the Acropolis, the site of the city’s earliest settlement in Attica. As a city state, the coastal capital of Athens reached its heyday in the fifth century BC. The office of the statesman, Pericles, between 461BC and his death in 429BC, saw an unprecedented spate of construction resulting in many of the great classical buildings (the Parthenon Erechtheion Hephaisteion and the temple at Sounion) now regarded as icons of ancient Greece. Physical evidence of the city’s success was matched by achievements in the intellectual arts. Democracy was born, drama flourished and Socrates conceived the foundations of Western philosophy. Remarkably, although the cultural legacy of this period has influenced Western civilisation ever since, the classical age in Athens only lasted for five decades. Under the Macedonians and Romans, the city retained a privileged cultural and political position but became a prestigious backwater of the Empire rather than a major player. The birth of Christianity heralded a long period of occupation and decline, culminating in 1456 and four centuries of Turkish domination, which has left an indelible cultural mark on the city. By the end of the 18th century, Athens was also suffering the indignity of having the artistic achievements of its classical past removed by looting collectors.
