Names of the Greeks Ancient Greece is the term used to describe the Greek -speaking world in ancient times. It refers not only to the geographical peninsula of modern Greece , but also to areas of Hellenic culture that were settled in ancient times by Greeks: Cyprus , the Aegean coast of Turkey (then known as Ionia Sicily and southern Italy (known as Magna Graecia ), and the scattered Greek settlements on the coasts of what are now Albania Bulgaria Egypt France ... Spain , and Ukraine There are no fixed or universally agreed upon dates for the beginning or the end of the Ancient Greek period. In common usage it refers to all Greek history before the Roman Empire , but historians use the term more precisely. Some writers include the periods of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations (from about 1600 BC to about 1100 BC ), while others argue that these civilizations, while Greek-speaking, were so different from later Greek cultures that they should be classed separately.

Greek Cities
The following are raw research notes on the development of Greek Cities during the Ancient Greek period.
Athens developed as small farming villages around a defended hilltop fortification. (9C) Greek soil was not good for growing excess crops. The Greeks developed a strong export industry of pottery, metal work and wine. (5C) "A tremendous stimulus to this commerce was the invention of coinage, not only the use of metal as a stand of value, long familiar in the Middle and Near East, but the practice of stamping the pieces of metal officially, to guarantee not only their weight but their purity." (pg. 166) (5C) Money allowed them to accumulate wealth on a greater scale. Now a trader did not have to trade for bulky goods which would need to be stored. Instead he could trade for coinage which is easily stored and accumulated. (5C) The Near East cities were ruled from the top down. In Greece the assemblies, which were elected by the population is where the power was derived. There is no trace of a popular sovereign type of government before the Greeks.(5C) Most Greek cities were isolated geographically. Their growth came in the form of trade, especially sea born trade. Greek Geography
Geography is the study of landscape, such as the mountains, the rivers, the plains, the coastline, and the placement of cities. We begin to look at the geography of ancient Greece when we examine how Greeks lived on their farms, why they traded, road systems, and the plant life that ancient Greece had. Geography has always had a great influence on Greece and its inhabitants. It is largely responsible for numerous continuities in its extensive history. While the mountains that split the Greek lands have contributed to localism they have been a major barrier to unity as a nation. The struggle of communication by land and the significant presence of the sea have made mariners out of Greeks for numerous generations. The natural resources ensure a steady flow of abundance and guarantee sustenance if governed wisely. There are enormous obstacles in the way of studying the geography of ancient Greece. One obstacle is that because of the tradition of fragmented land holding; plots of land became very small and rarely have the same names through time. Because of this, archaeologists cannot identify a feature mentioned in a document and go and see what is there today. The second obstacle is that we are separated from the classical Greek landscape by a great gap in time: well over a thousand empty years with almost no relevant written record to show how the landscape was developing. Archaeological survey bridges this gap, but for geographical purposes, this information is extremely limited, in that much of the material found cannot be closely dated.

    History of Ancient Greece
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant advance of European civilization - the development of the first city-states - took place not on the fertile open central European plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative energy in warfare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete. The history of Greece can be traced back to Stone Age hunters. Later came early farmers and the civilizations of the Minoan and Mycenaean kings. This was followed by a period of wars and invasions, known as the Dark Ages. In about 1100 BC, a people called the Dorians invaded from the north and spread down the west coast. In the period from 500-336 BC Greece was divided into small city states, each of which consisted of a city and its surrounding countryside.
