There may well have been Jews, if not Jewish communities, living in Greek cities as far back as the Babylonian Exile (586-530 B.C.E.). After the wars of the Maccabees, between 170 and 161 B.C.E., many Hellenized Jews left Judaea and settled in the new commercial centers, such as Alexandria and Antioch, of the Hellenistic world. From these communities smaller groups moved to some of the coastal Aegean cities such as Ephesus, Smyrna, Thessaloniki, and, according to tradition, Chalkis. Jewish communities also may have been founded on Crete at this time. In any case, by the time of the Apostle Paul there were flourishing Jewish communities in most of the major Greek cities.

Updated 7/20/05 A Brief Comparison of Greek and Roman Sculpture by Teacher Oz (me):
When comparing Greek and Roman sculpture you need to know about the three distinct periods of Greek sculpture. The Greek Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic styles each represent different ideals. Archaic, best represented by the Kouros, evolved from Egyptian sculpture. Kouros characteristics were: rigidity, one foot forward stance, formal hair treatment, bilateral symmetry (same on left and right), and its frontality (block like). It differed from the Egyptian in that the sculpture was nude, there was no webbing between the arms and body, and there was attention to anatomical detail. The Archaic Kouros was the composite of the athletic ideal through mathematical formula(1:8). It was not realistic, but idealistic.
During Classical period, the change in sculpture was embodied by one word: controposto . The most significant change in sculpture to that date, controposto was the counterbalance, or s-curve of the body. One foot came forward and the weight distribution became more naturalistic. Besides conroposto, the other characteristics of Classical sculpture were: head turned on different plain from body (aloof, representing reason controlled) and less formal hair treatment. Archaic was carving "stone into body", while Classical was carving a "body out of stone". "The Canon", by Polyclitus, is the archetype of classical sculpture. The goal of classical sculpture was to portray a perfect balance and harmony through art. This mirrored Greek philosophy.

    A note from the creator:
Although the purpose of this website is completely different as mentioned in the About section, I have decided to include some of my writings on Greek History because I believe that it is important for my readers to know the place I come from. Given the fact that the place where we grow up influences the way we see things and is a major factor in the formation of our personality, I think that the visitor will find it easier to approach me and my writings if he knows my country and culture. Since July 2002, the site has become international so the answer to the question "why is this section still here?" is at the About section. Location Greece is located at the South-East of Europe and it has borders with Turkey at the east, Bulgary, FYROM and Albania at the nord, and with Italy at the West. Athens, a city with more than 3.5 million residents, is the capital of Greece. It is a country with great natural beauty as well as a long and glorious history.
Ancient History With the first signs of human activity over its territory dating back to the prehistory, Greece became the center for many civilizations, firstly the Cycladic during the prehistoric times, then the Minoan, the Mycenean and lastly the Ancient Greek great civilization whose monuments are spread all over Greece and millions of foreign visitors come every year to see them. The Ancient Greeks put the foundations for almost all sciences like medecine, physics, mathematics and philosophy. The Ancient Greek civilization was at its peak in the 5th century BC and continued later until the 1st century BC when Greece was conquered by the Romans.

Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

1000 BCE : Greece - The earliest known prehistoric civilizations occupy the Aegean world. This period marks the rise and fall of the MINOAN and MYCENAEAN civilization. 2200 BCE : Greece - Indo-European invaders, speaking the earliest forms of Greek, enter the mainland of Greece, and the MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION (named after the leading Greek city on the peninsula from 1200 BCE ) emerges. 1500 BCE : Greece - MINOAN CIVILIZATION (named after the Cretan ruler Minos) reaches its height with its central power in Knossos on the island of Crete. This culture is apparently more female-oriented and peaceful than others at the time. 1400 BCE : Greece - MYCENAEAN CIVILIZATION replaces MINOAN CIVILIZATION after the destruction of Knossos. Bronze weapons, war-scenes on art, Cyclopean defence walls, and the fact that male warriors were buried with their weapons provide evidence for the claim that the Mycenaeans were militaristic. The horse-drawn chariot emerges around this time. The Mycenaeans dominate the Aegean world for about 200 years. 1250 BCE : Greece - Though this is disputed, some scholars believe that the
