Birthday of Augustus Sept. 23
The first Roman Emperor, Augustus, was the adopted son of Julius Caesar. Early in its history, Rome deposed its kings and instituted the Republican form of government with two annually elected officials known as consuls. Starting with Augustus, a single leader again rose to the top. This time, he was called emperor or princeps, rather than king. Learn more about Augustus Caesar.

Phidias (490430BC). Pheidias was and is considered the greatest sculpturer of the divine. He was also an architect and a painter.
http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/history/ancient/phidias.htm
Phidias
Pheidias was and is considered the greatest sculpturer of the divine. He was also an architect and a painter.
We do not know much about him, except that he was Athenian and studied at Hageladas school in Argos. His first comission was a group of national heroes with Miltiades as a central figure, and the famous statesman Pericles ordered several sculptures for Athens from him.
Phidias made the statue of Zeus in Olympia, by his time considered his masterpiece. It was made of gold and ivory, and the people regularly oiled it so the materials would not crack. It was said that anyone who had seen the God's smile could nevere be truly unhappy again. Furthermore, he made an Aphrodite in Elis and an Athena in Plataiai.
He was very productive, and had many disciples working for him. His brother Panainos was a painter and helped him with the Zeus statue.
There are different stories about the end of his life. According to one source he was arrested for embezzlement in the work on the Athena statue by Pericles enemies and died in prison. According to another source he fled the country and died in prison in Elis. A third version is that he was convicted of impiety after putting portraits of himself and Pericles on the shield of Athena. According to Plutarch, Phidias was really the one that supervised the work on the Acropolis. Webmistress V.E.K. Sandels

ANCIENT GREECE
Around 1.200 B.C. waves of Dorian invaders swept into Greece from Illyria on the east of the Adriatic and brought about the downfall of the Mycenaean civilization. The following four centuries are known as the "Dark Age" of Greece. The period started with a civilization of people dressed in bell-shaped skirts and tightly fitted bodices, and ended with a race dressed in draped clothes, the costumes we now associate with the Greeks and the Romans. From the seventh century B.C. onwards, we have vast quantities of reference material for the study of costume. Greeks were among the finest exponents of figurative sculpture. Never before had costume been portrayed with such meticulous care and precision. Statues, together with untold numbers of painted pots, give the historian a unique pictorial history of the development of a nation and its fashions. At the same time, we have the invaluable contribution of the written word. Such great Greek historians as Herodotus have given us very detailed descriptions of developments in fashion and the social significance of costume and their accessories.

31. Stesichorus, Greece, Ancient History
Stesichorus was very creative and prolific, and is considered the first literary celebrity in greece. history Mythology Who is Who in Antiquity
http://www.in2greece.com/english/historymyth/history/ancient/stesichorus.htm
Stesichorus
Lyric poet, probably from Himera on Sicily, who lived during the first half of the 6th century BC. The name Stesichorus actually means "Chorus Master", so it might have been a title and not a name. His real name might have been Tisias.
Stesichorus was very creative and prolific, and is considered the first literary celebrity in Greece. He influenced many poets with his long, narrative poems with mythological themes. Not much of his work has survived, but we know that he wrote in the Doric dialect, and that he was inspired by Homer. He wrote "The Wooden Horse", "The Capture of Troy", "Homecoming" and "Oresteia". The latter surely inspired Aeschylus.
These poems were accompanied by a chorus or maybe a solo singer and a flute. He is traditionally credited with inventing the triad: three stanza metrical groupings, which were later used in verses and Athenian stage dramas: strophe: turn, antistrophe: counterturn, and epodos: after song.
Stesichorus also wrote two poems about Helen of Troy: one true and one false. According to the false one, Helen was never in Troy, but a phantom of her was sent there by the gods. According to an anecdote, Stesichorus was struck blind after he had written the first, traditional version, and did not regain his sight until he had completed the second one.

Nikos Stavrolakis was one of the founders and director of the Jewish Museum in Greece from 1977 until 1993. During that time he was responsible for creating the basic collection of the museum consisting of religious, ethnic and historical artifacts-the sole remnants of a 2,400 year Jewish presence in Greece. He is the author of several books of Judeo-Greek Interest including an important guide to "Jewish Sites and Synagogues of Greece", a book on Judaeo-Greek cookery, "Cookbook of the Jews of Greece" and several other works. He has also followed a seperate career as a painter and illustrator and his works have been exhibited widely in the USA, UK, Europe and Israel. Of lesser importance to the reader, he was my ancient history teacher in highschool. His translation and introduction to the book Athens-Auschwitz is the basis of this website. The book was written by Errikos Sevillias, a survivor of the Nazi death camps and found among his papers when he was struck and killed by a motorcycle in 1974. The book is one of the most heart rendering and enlightening books I have ever read. Matt Barrett

Greek history does, after all, come down to us through the eyes of the other in fact, had the most stable government in the history of ancient greece

    Athens
, a bitter enemy and rival of Sparta. The two represent diametrically opposed concepts of the Greek polis and its relations with other city-states; they also represent diametrically opposed concepts of the individual's relationship to the state. Despite all the rhetoric in Athens and in the European historical tradition, we should keep in mind that the Spartans believed they lived in the best of all Greek worlds, and many of their Greek neighbors agreed with them. The rivalry, then, between Sparta and Athens, which would erupt into a disastrous war for Athens, was also an ideological and cultural rivalry.
ten to one , it was only a matter of time before this subject population would overrun their conquerors. So the Spartans invented a new political system as dramatically revolutionary as Athenian democracy in the north: they turned their state into what amounts to a military state.
helots . We describe their lives as the life of a "serf," for they worked small plots of land on estates owned by Spartans; part of their produce went to the master of the estate, and the remainder went to the helot farmer and his family. There's no question that the life of the helots was a miserable life. Labor was long and hard and the helots always lived right on the border of subsistence.
perioeci , or "dwellers around or about." These were foreign people who served as a kind of buffer population between the Spartans and the helots. Because of this vital function, they were accorded a great deal of freedom. Most of the trade and commerce carried out in Sparta were performed by the
