Ancient History at UCSB
Across two departments, History and Classics, UCSB has no fewer than five professors who identify their primary research area as Greek or Roman History. Greek History of the Archaic and Classical periods is covered by Profs. Jordan and Lee, whose specializations include history of land and naval warfare, historiography, archaeology and epigraphy, ethnic identity and religion. Prof. Morstein-Marx focuses on Republican Rome and the Early Principate, with occasional forays into Hellenistic history; special interests include historiography, oratory, political theory, Roman topography and monuments. Rome of the later Empire and Late Antiquity are represented by Profs. Drake and Digeser respectively, emphasizing paganism, Christianity, and the development of political and religious institutions. In addition, several scholars in these two departments and others work and teach in closely related areas: Roman society ( Shelton , Classics), Roman religion and Latin historiography (Hahn, Classics), Early Christianity (Thomas, Religious Studies), Greek and Roman art and archaeology (Erickson and Yegül, Classics and History of Art and Architecture). Also, the History Department has a strong Medieval program that pairs well with its strengths in Late Antiquity. Profs. Erickson, Lee and Yegül are actively associated with excavations in

Theseus suppressed crime and brought the natives of Attica together into the first democracy. He saved the Athenian children from the Minotaur, but his kidnap of the queen of the Amazons brought trouble, and he ended his days in disgrace. Lycurgus T he Father of Sparta circa 800 B.C.)
Lycurgus established harmony, simplicity, and strength in Sparta. This warrior society tamed its youth through systematic education aimed at developing leadership, courage, public spirit, and wisdom. Solon The Lawmaker of Athens circa 600 B.C.)
Athens, unlike Sparta, was a money-mad commercial city. The constitution framed by Solon mitigated the class struggle between the rich and the poor, and allowed for the growth of democratic institutions. Aristides "The Just"

faculty graduates undergraduates alumni ... dissertation prospectus What is ancient history? In the eighteenth century, Europe began to dominate the globe. Asking themselves why this was, European intellectuals came up with a radical new theory: European superiority came not from Christianity, but from a cultural tradition that began in ancient Greece. The Greeks invented freedom and rationality; Rome then spread these gifts across Europe. This was why only Europe had a Scientific Revolution and an Enlightenment; and why Europe was now colonizing the other continents. Anyone who wanted to understand the world had to begin with the history, literature, and art of Greece and Rome. For 200 years this premise made close reading of Thucydides, Tacitus, and other texts meaningful and important. Greek and Roman history were institutionalized in European and American schools and universities. But as the World Wars, decolonization, and the rise of Asian economic power shook confidence in Euro-American superiority, the value of careful study of Greek and Roman history seemed less obvious. Since the 1960s many people have concluded that these fields are irrelevant; and in the 1980s some multicultural critics even called them Eurocentric charter myths. (a) What exactly happened in the ancient Mediterranean world? Much remains obscure, even in the best-trodden fields of political history; and we have barely scratched the surface of questions about economics, society, and culture. We need to continue developing traditional philological skills, and to combine them with new evidence from material culture, new methods from the social sciences and humanities, and new interests.

Greece has a unique environment thanks to its central position between three con-tinents, diverse geographical features, multitude of islands, and turbulent geological history – a country whose nation has lived here for thousands of years, is rooted in ethnic identity, and has shaped the landscape. On narrow strips of land, you will discover all the habitat types found in Europe, from the smallest phrygana on coastal shores to beech and birch forests, and alpine grasslands. You will find a rich diversity of plants, almost 6,000 species and subspecies – a European botanical paradise. On this south-eastern tip of Europe, migrating birds, the world’s most practiced trav-ellers, stop to rest before embarking on the long and dangerous flight to Africa or northern countries. Over time, nature has created high mountain peaks, hidden ravines, seasonal rivers, plains, and estuaries. The presence of humans here over thousands of years has left distinctive imprints on the landscape. The beauty you will see is inimitable. The land-scape teems with living things, and abounds with history, monuments, and culture.

The British Museum has an unparalled collection of artifacts from the begining of the Bronze age.
    The Perseus Project
mounted by Tufts University (near Boston) has organized a tremendous amount of Ancient Greek material. Part of their work brings together lots of pictures of Greek artifacts from many museums around the world. Two good things to look at are COINS and VASES The Perseus Project people let you search in a lot different categories, including animals, atheletics and historical people. Once you have chosen a category you just have to keep clicking until you get a picture ... with their stories and some pictures. They even let you search by vase shapes. Try clicking on "select another kind of search" if you want to search vases by period or region.Don't bother to click on "collection" because it just shows you who owns the vases today.
