Sightseeing Passes
Several passes can cut down considerably on entrance costs to the country's stately homes and gardens. If you plan to do extensive touring, you'll save a lot of pounds by using one of these passes instead of paying the relatively steep entrance fees on an attraction-by-attraction basis. Listed below are three organizations that offer passes waiving admission charges to hundreds of historical properties located throughout the United Kingdom. Each is a good deal, as the money you'll save on visitation to just a few of the available sites will pay for the price of the pass. The British National Trust offers members free entry to some 340 National Trust sites scattered throughout Britain. Focusing on gardens, castles, historic parks, abbeys, and ruins, sites include Chartwell, St. Michael's Mount, and Beatrix Potter's House. The membership fee includes a listing of properties, maps, essential information for independent tours, and listings and reservations for holiday cottages located on the protected properties. Two months later on February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin near the Sinking Spring. Here the Lincolns lived and farmed before moving to land a few miles away at Knob Creek. The area was established by Congress on July 17, 1916. An early 19th century Kentucky cabin, symbolic of the one in which Lincoln was born, is preserved in a memorial building at the site of his birth.

World Monuments Fund Receives Major Gift from the Estate of Paul Mellon
$20 million to endow new educational program and preserve endangered sites in the U.K.; first program is annual Paul Mellon Lecture series, inaugurated in February 2003 in New York.
Ms. Burnham states, "The gift from the estate of the great American philanthropist Paul Mellon continues his exceptional generosity to the World Monuments Fund during his lifetime. His dedication to the preservation of monuments to human achievement was unmatched. The gift will provide crucial operating income for the Fund’s education program, and will help ensure the conservation of cultural heritage sites in Great Britain, which was of special interest to Mr. Mellon. We are delighted that the inaugural Paul Mellon Lecture was delivered by Dr. Smith, his first presentation in this country since assuming his new role at London’s National Gallery."
New Focus on Public Education
Heritage Preservation in the United Kingdom
The Church’s architect, Nicholas Hawksmoor, began his career as an assistant to Sir Christopher Wren and later to Sir John Vanbrugh, developing expertise through his work on several major buildings, including Blenheim Palace and Wren’s City of London churches. The six churches Hawksmoor designed in London during the transitional period from the seventeenth and eighteenth century, including St. George’s, are the architect’s best-known works and earned him renown as the preeminent Baroque architect working in England. St. George’s portico, based on the third-century Greek Temple of Baalbek, is among the grandest of London’s eighteenth-century church façades. Moreover, the building has a rich cultural history: It is depicted in one of Hogarth’s best-known engravings, "Gin Lane," and was the setting for Charles Dickens’s "A Bloomsbury Christening." Anthony Trollope, the Victorian novelist, was baptized there.

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/massey/h5-447-e.html
CHAPTER XX
HISTORIC SITES AND MONUMENTS
1. As explained in Part I of this Report the responsibility for the preservation and marking of historic sites and monuments has been for many years entrusted to the National Parks Service of the Department of Resources and Development. The Parks Service is advised by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board, appointed by the Federal Government and composed, in the main, of historians of repute, together with the Dominion Archivist and a representative of the Parks Branch. The Board meets once a year to consider and advise upon the marking of sites which are brought to its attention by its own members and others. 2. We should like to express our admiration of the work done through the voluntary efforts of the Board, and through the interest and energy of the Parks Service of which the Historic Sites and Monuments Division operates on a limited budget ($135,000). As mentioned in Part I, many important sites have been marked, and many historic structures have been restored and are now maintained. 3. We believe, however, that the time has now come for a considerable expansion of this programme and for some modification of policy. We conceive that, without neglecting the important material consideration of attracting the tourist, the principal object of the Board should be to instruct Canadians about their history through the emotional and imaginative appeal of associated objects. Factual information can be obtained in books; the function of the monument or marker is, we assume, to convey a sense of the reality of the past. We do not ignore the entertainment value; but we consider the enjoyment of national history to be a form of entertainment not sufficiently familiar to Canadians.

Travel tips
Maps and Guides By Air Cars, Trains, etc. accommodation ... Other Web sites Beauty itself doth of itself persuade the eyes of men without an orator.
So wrote William Shakespeare in 'The Rape of Lucrece'. And so the beauty of Scotland persuades the eyes of any visitor. Open to any kind of traveller, from the young person travelling cheaply with a sleeping bag to the wayfarer who can afford a noble night in a castle, Scotland doesn't need a long tourist presentation. In these short travel tips, we only want to give some advice, enriched by our personal experience; the simple experience of a travelling couple with only a few pounds and a lot of curiosity. It's up to you to discover the beauty of Scotland, from the middle of a stone circle or inside a crowded pub, 'without an orator'.
Maps and guides. In order to better plan your journey, we suggest to buy and examine a map of Scotland in advance. In Europe it's easy to find the right Michelin map (sheet 401, scotland/Ecosse, 1:400.000). It has got a good index, a lot of road and tourist indications (megalithic monuments included), a nice price and it is easy to fold up. However, the key is in English, French, German and Dutch, but not in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese; after a journey under the inevitable Scottish rain it will be drenched with water and hard to be read near the creases. Lastly, it has got only maps on a scale of 1:800.000 for the Orkney and the Shetland Isles (megalithic paradises). So we suggest buying more detailed maps locally. The best of all are the Ordnance Survey ones. Quite expensive (in 1997, from 3.95 to 5.95 pounds each), they are neverthless well worth the expense and essential in searching the most remote megaliths. Extraordinarly detailed, updated and full of useful information to get you really know an area, they have also the National Grid squares so that any feature can be given a unique reference number (see also our
