2,170 miles (3,495 km) As the harbinger of America's westward expansion, the Oregon Trail was the pathway to the Pacific for fur traders, gold seekers, missionaries, and emigrants. Beginning in 1841 and enduring for more than 20 years, an estimated 300,000 emigrants followed this route from the Midwest to Oregon on a trip that took five months to complete. Today the trail corridor contains some 300 miles of discernible wagon ruts and 125 historic sites. The approximate route can still be followed by automobile, and opportunities are available to travel by foot, horse, or mountain bike in many places. Oregon-California Trails Association, P.O. Fort Kaskaskia
Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site consists of over 200 acres situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The site features the remnants of an earthen-work and timber fortification constructed by the French sometime during the mid-1700's. The parapets and dry moat are still visible. The site played a role in Illinois pre-statehood history, from its early involvement with the French to its role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. Garrison Hill Cemetery is also part of the historic site. The remains of some 3,000 gravesites were re-interred here. They were removed from several cemeteries on Kaskaskia Island as a result of the flood of 1881, which eventually destroyed the town of Kaskaskia, Illinois, the first state capital. The site offers one of the finest overlooks which affords the vistor a view of the Mississippi River, the mouth of the Kaskaskia River, present day Kaskaskia Island and the site of the original village.

Fort de Chartres - Prairie du Rocher
Fort de Chartres is the last of three eighteenth-century forts by that name erected near the Mississippi River by France's colonial government. From 1720 to 1763 French administration of the Illinois Country was centered at the forts, built successively over a 40-year period on or near the same site. The stone fort, built in the 1750s and abandoned in 1771, has been partially reconstructed to provide a glimpse of life in Illinois under the French regime. Fort de Chartres State Historic Site, which also preserves the archaeological remains of the earlier wooden forts, is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
    The Illinois Country
    Two Wooden Stockades
French officials named their stockade Fort de Chartres in honor of Louis duc de Chartres, son of the regent of France. The fort was completed in 1720. Located "about a musket shot" from the Mississippi River, the fort consisted of a palisade of squared logs surrounded by a dry moat. Bastions built at diagonally opposite corners provided cover fire for each of the walls. Several buildings occupied the fort's interior, including a storehouse and countinghouse used by the Indies Company. Another building probably served the Provincial Council, which conducted the affairs of the king and the company. The fort, subject to frequent flooding, deteriorated rapidly.

      The Industrial Revolution 1750 – 1850.
Anne Roerkohl, a German film maker, has produced a DVD about the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Commentary is in both German and English. It comes both as a complete film lasting 23 minutes and as seven ‘trigger’ films on specific topics, each lasting between 6 and 9 minutes. Mostly shot on location at such places as Quarry Bank Mill, Ironbridge Gorge, and New Lanark, the films are superbly made, and provide excellent visual components for a course on Industrial Britain. An interactive CD-ROM is due later this year. More information is available at www.documentarfilm.com. Lesson plans to accompany the film are available on the website at:

    • Development of the U.S. Northwest An Outpost in the Wilderness, 1819-1839 New Roles for an Old Fort, 1851 to early 1900s The Fort Rebuilt, 1950s to Present
Historic Fort Snelling The story of Fort Snelling is the story of the development of the U.S. Northwest. While surrounded today by freeways and a large urban population, Fort Snelling was once a lonely symbol of American ambition in the wilderness. The United States gained control over the Upper Mississippi Valley through the Revolutionary War with Great Britain and later Louisiana Purchase from France. This vast territory inhabited by fur traders and Indians still loyal to the British in Canada lay well beyond American settlement. After the War of 1812, the government took physical possession of the valuable Northwest frontier by establishing a chain of Indian agencies and supporting forts from Lake Michigan to the Missouri River. An Outpost in the Wilderness These outposts denied non-citizens commercial use of American rivers. British control of the rich fur trade ended. The United States Army kept American Indian lands free of white encroachment until appropriate treaties were signed; apprehended outlaws; and protected law-abiding travelers and traders.

    Passports
Passports have always been a source of necessity, interest and intrigue. They are necessary documents that not only provide us with the means for travel but also record these travels with exotic stamps and visas.
Passports have become collectibles; Guy van Keer of Belgium holds the world record (according to The Guinness Book of World Records , 1998) for his collection of 3,880 passports. Forged and stolen passports have become big business and quite frequently a key element of the spy novel. Even real spies have to use passports. The creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, used a passport for a wartime venture; in 2000, it sold for more than fifteen thousand pounds! This site is intended to provide: This site is NOT intended as a scholarly or legal source; that is what the bibliographies are for. The Passport as Historical Document General history
A passport is a document that identifies the individual holding it and allows this individual entry to another geographic area as well as permitting return to the point of origin. In one form or another, passports have been around since time immemorial. However, the current dcoument which is now understood to be a passport is issued by a country to a citizen permitting them to travel to other places and return. At present, passports tend to be physical documents, paper in construct, usually with a photograph of the individual and some identification, such as date of birth, physical description. Recent events, in particular, have shown that these documents can be readily stolen or forged and there are plans to completely revise the concept of a passport, imbedding biological data such as fingerprints, retinal scans or even DNA into barcodes or microchips.
