CHAPTER XI*
HISTORIC SITES AND MONUMENTS
THE HISTORIC SITES AND MONUMENTS BOARD
I F Canadians are to know "as much as possible about their country, its history and traditions", the proper preservation of our ancient monuments and historic sites is a matter of first importance. These recall in a vivid picturesque manner not only the great and heroic moments of the past, but the thoughts and doings of other days, so different from our own, and yet so much a part of all that we are. To English-speaking Canadians the word "ancient" may seem strange in a country so new. But they will recall the French sense of "former", and the rapidity with which in this new and changing country former things may cease to be. And all Canadians may read with interest the remark of the Saskatoon Archaeological Society, that the Stone Age, in Europe so remote, is in Saskatchewan only a few generations away, with traces of its story still written on the face of the prairie. 2. Federal responsibility for historic sites and monuments in Canada rests with the National Parks Service of the Department of Resources and Development. This apparently curious arrangement is justified by what is known as "consumer interest". Historic sites and parks are attractions both for visitors from abroad and for Canadians on holiday; and historic accident has often made it possible for the sites to be identified with and included in the parks. From a practical viewpoint the association has been valuable to both. 3. The National Parks Service receives information and advice on historical matters from the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, described in the official statement as "an honorary body of recognized historians, representing the various provinces of Canada".

Lexington Battle Green
It was here, on the morning of April 19, 1775, that "the first blood was spilt in the dispute with Great Britain," as George Washington wrote in his diary. In this first skirmish, 77 Minutemen (local colonists who had volunteered to be first responders to military and other threats) faced British Regulars. Eight Minutemen lost their lives and 10 were wounded. Two British soldiers were also injured. After the battle, Samuel Adams exclaimed to John Hancock, "What a glorious morning for America!" The Old Burying Ground
The gravestones on this site, dating from 1690, are the oldest in Lexington. Buried here are Capt. John Parker of the Minutemen and the British soldier wounded on the British retreat from Concord on April 19, 1775 (who died three days later, at the Buckman Tavern).

Grave Sites of Canadian Prime Ministers The Office of Prime Minister in Canada The office of prime minister is not mentioned in Canada's founding constitution, the British North America Act of 1867. Yet the prime minister has always stood at the heart of Canadian government. In our parliamentary democracy, Canada's governor general acts, with very few exceptions, on the advice given by ministers who hold the support of the people's elected representatives in the House of Commons. The key to that system has always been the prime minister. In theory, the prime minister may be an anonymous adviser. In fact, he or she is the public face of power in Canada. The prime minister leads the team of ministers, called the cabinet, which runs the government of Canada on a day-to-day basis. The government's survival depends upon support from Parliament, so a prime minister will also lead one of the political parties represented in the House of Commons in Ottawa.

    Fort Kaskaskia
Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site consists of over 200 acres situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The site features the remnants of an earthen-work and timber fortification constructed by the French sometime during the mid-1700's. The parapets and dry moat are still visible. The site played a role in Illinois pre-statehood history, from its early involvement with the French to its role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1803. Garrison Hill Cemetery is also part of the historic site. The remains of some 3,000 gravesites were re-interred here. They were removed from several cemeteries on Kaskaskia Island as a result of the flood of 1881, which eventually destroyed the town of Kaskaskia, Illinois, the first state capital. The site offers one of the finest overlooks which affords the vistor a view of the Mississippi River, the mouth of the Kaskaskia River, present day Kaskaskia Island and the site of the original village.

(Nov 1-March 31) 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Built in 1816 for James K. Polk's father, Samuel, this Federal-style house is the only surviving home of America's eleventh President. James K. Polk lived here with his parents from 1818 to 1824, when he began his legal and political career. His rise to national prominence included serving as governor of Tennessee from 1839 to 1841, and culminated in 1844, when he was elected as a "darkhorse" Democratic candidate for the Presidency. He died of cholera in Nashville at age 53 on June 15, 1849, three months after stepping down from the White House. During his administration, the United States gained 800,000 square miles of territory by conquest, treaty, and purchase. At Polk's urging, the United States annexed the Republic of Texas. As a result of the Mexican War, which Polk advocated, Mexico ceded land which now comprises Arizona, Nevada, California, and Utah, as well as parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. Polk departed from his party's campaign slogan of "Fifty-four forty or fight!" and approved a compromise with Great Britain by which the United States obtained the land which is now Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and parts of Montana and Wyoming. With extension of this country's borders from the Atlantic to the Pacific came fulfillment of what some saw as its "manifest destiny," a romantic concept and rallying cry at the time.
