The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed on January 1 from the merger of the Kingdom of Great Britain (itself a merger of the former Kingdoms of Scotland and England in ) and the Kingdom of Ireland . The merger was facilitated by the decision of the Irish Parliament in College Green Dublin in August to vote itself out of existence by passing the Act of Union . Whilst the Irish Free State became independent in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland continued in name until when it was renamed as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in accordance with the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act Union Flag ( Under the terms of the merger, Ireland was to be represented by over 100 MPs in the united parliament, meeting in the Palace of Westminster . Part of the trade-off was to be the granting of Catholic Emancipation . However, this was blocked by King George III who argued that emancipating Roman Catholics would breach his Coronation Oath Generations of Irish leaders campaigned to establish home government in Ireland.

How laws are made in Great Britain
In Great Britain laws are made in Parliament at Westminster. Its law-making status makes Parliament Great Britain's main legislative body - though the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament do have legislative capabilities. However, it is difficult to estimate what the impact of law making by the European Union will be in future years. To date, most EU laws that have been imposed on the UK (and other members off the EU) have concerned environmental issues. Some political parties in the UK, such as the UK Independence Party, fear that the EU will broaden its net with regards to areas where it will impose legislation. Time will tell. In the UK there are five types of legislation considered by Parliament. These are:
  • Government Bills Private Members’ Bill Private Bills Hybrid Bills Statutory Instruments
Government Bills embody government policy and a Minister introduces them. The bulk of Parliament’s time is taken up with these types of bills. As the current government has such a large parliamentary majority, it is almost certain that all Government Bills will be passed into law (though some may be amended along the way). Individual MP’s from any political party (or a peer) can introduce a Private Members Bill. These rarely have any chance of becoming law as too much of Parliament’s time is taken up with Government bills. As a result of this, Parliament gets little chance to discuss Private Members Bills, let alone vote on them.

Europe: Magic Mushrooms Now Illegal in Great Britain
http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/396/ukban.shtml
For the past few years, Britons have been enjoying a loophole in Britain's drug law that allowed hallucinogenic mushrooms such as amanita muscaria and psilocbye cubensis to be imported, grown, sold, and used in the British Isles. According to one British magazine, Amsterdam of London, they have been quite popular, with one major "legal hallucinogen" outlet selling 220 pounds of magic mushrooms a week enough for 10,000 highs. Some drug policy activists even suggest the popularity of magic mushrooms has lessened the demand for other drugs, particularly Ecstasy.
But that has all changed, effective Monday. The British government has reclassified magic mushrooms as Class-A drugs under the Drugs Act of 2005, so what was a legal business activity last week is now punishable by up to life in prison. Even simple possession for personal use can now garner a prison sentence of up to seven years. In scheduling the trippy fungi as Class-A drugs, the British government is saying it considers them as dangerous as cocaine or heroin. "Magic mushrooms are a powerful hallucinogen and can cause real harm, especially to vulnerable people and those with mental health problems," said Home Office minister Paul Goggins. "The law has not been clear with regard to the status of fresh magic mushrooms and some have tried to exploit this apparent loophole."
