The merger followed the brutal supression of the 1798 rebellion and was facilitated by the decision of the exclusively Anglican Irish Parliament in College Green Dublin in August to vote itself out of existence by passing the Act of Union . The British government awarded gifts of titles, land and money to Irish MPs to encourage their new-found unionism. History : The Romans conquered and settled the major part of the British mainland between the first and fifth centuries AD, although their influence was limited in the northern and western regions. After their withdrawal (410-442), the island was invaded by Jutes, Saxons and Angles, who established seven kingdoms in the area south of Hadrian's Wall. Scotland and Wales remained Pictish/Celtic. By the early ninth century, Wessex had emerged as the dominant kingdom and was the spearhead of resistance to the Danish invasions, particularly during the reign of Alfred the Great.
By the time of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), England was the most highly organised state in Europe and this position was consolidated when Norman military feudal organisation was imposed by William I and his successors (notably Henry I and Henry II) after 1066. Inheritance and dynastic marriage had given England control of most of France by the 12th century, and the territorial disputes were not settled until the end of the Hundred Years' War in 1453. The 12th century also saw the conquest of Ireland, although it was never fully integrated into the political life of the mainland (see

For centuries English towns and cities governed themselves as they saw fit, with little interference from the central government. Charters conferred by the monarch or by nobles gave cities the right to choose their own officers. This freedom led to a number of abuses of power as well as to a great diversity of governmental forms.

Great Britain and Open Source Software January 2002 Britain remains apart from the festivities as twelve nations celebrate the arrival of the Euro this January, but on the software front the country is marching along with the rest of Europe toward the use of more Open Source software in government. In response to the June 2000 Action Plan (http://europa.eu.int/comm/information_society/eeurope/documentation/index_en.htm) supporting the European Commission’s initiative "eEurope – An Information Society for All," the British government has been mandating open standards and specifications under its e-Government Interoperability Framework (e-GIF). The Government has recently put forward a draft of a policy concerning Open Source (http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/rfc/rfc_document.asp?docnum=429) and emphasizing the desirability of Open Source for interoperability. The brief policy draft is based on a longer document, "Analysis of the Impact of Open Source Software" by QinetiQ ltd, dated October 2001 (http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/interoperability/egif_document.asp?docnum=430)." Any business considering the use of Open Source software should read this report because it represents the response of a large user faced with the questions of Open Source. The emphasis is on a pragmatic approach rather than on Open Source zealotry: the report frankly admits that in some cases proprietary software may give greater value than Open Source software, and it does not agree with the argument that Open Source software is inherently more secure than proprietary software. But the report also gives a long list of benefits that Open Source in general offers large users.

Monday, July 11, 2005 - Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony has written to the government and people of Great Britain expressing great shock and sorrow over the bombings which occurred in London last week.
Dr. Anthony said, “We deplore and we condemn in the most emphatic ways these acts of terror and barbarism perpetuated against the government and people of the United Kingdom with whom we share a long history and deep friendship. We are deeply saddened at the loss of innocent lives and the physical and emotional injury inflicted upon those who survived. Our hearts and our prayers go out to the victims and to their friends, families and loved ones.”
Dr. Anthony said it was not only an attack on the United Kingdom “The grief which you, your government and the people of the United Kingdom experience will most certainly be shared by many, but particularly so, by the government and people of Saint Lucia. I ask Prime Minister, that you please accept these expressions of our outrage, sorrow and support and that you convey those same sentiments to your government and people. I ask finally that you remain assured of our continued solidarity and support in this difficult time.”

Joint Declaration of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People's Reblic of China On the Question of Hong Kong
The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of the People's Republic of China have reviewed with satisfaction the friendly relations existing between the two Governments and peoples in recent years and agreed that a proper negotiated settlement of the question of Hong Kong, which is left over from the past, is conducive to the maintenance of the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and to the further strengthening and development of the relations between the two countries on a new basis. To this end, they have, after talks between the delegations of the two Governments, agreed to declare as follows:
1. The Government of the People's Republic of China declares that to recover the Hong Kong area (including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, hereinafter referred to as Hong Kong) is the common aspiration of the entire Chinese people, and that it has decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong with effect from 1 July 1997.
2. The Government of the United Kingdom declares that it will restore Hong Kong to the People's Republic of China with effect from 1 July 1997.

Britain: From Bad to Worse Dave Kopel, Dr. Paul Gallant and Dr. Joanne Eisen
Thursday, March 22, 2001
During the 19th century, and most of the 20th, Britain enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as an unusually safe and crime-free nation, compared to the United States or continental Europe. No longer. To the great consternation of British authorities concerned about tourism revenue, a June CBS News report proclaimed Great Britain "one of the most violent urban societies in the Western world." Declared Dan Rather: "This summer, thousands of Americans will travel to Britain expecting a civilized island free from crime and ugliness ... [but now] the U.K. has a crime problem ... worse than ours." Not surprisingly to many observers, the violent crime rate has risen dramatically and steadily since gun bans have been instituted. That's a trend seen wherever strict gun control laws have been implemented. And that's the part of the story British officials have tried to keep under wraps. A headline in the London Daily Telegraph back on April 1, 1996, said it all: "Crime Figures a Sham, Say Police." The story noted that "pressure to convince the public that police were winning the fight against crime had resulted in a long list of ruses to 'massage' statistics," and "the recorded crime level bore no resemblance to the actual amount of crime being committed."

Russia, Great Britain Stand Together On Future Afghan Government
Russia and Afghanistan stand together on the future government of Afghanistan, said British foreign minister Jack Straw after meeting his Russian counterpart Igor Ivanov.
We believe that there should be a line between the fanatic Taleban and the ordinary Taleban, he noted. Straw also pointed out that Great Britain saw the future Afghan government as including above all the Pashtuns as the nation-forming ethnic group.
In turn, Igor Ivanov pointed out that Moscow and London stood together on the bulk of international problems and stressed he saw no serious differences concerning the future Afghan government.
