It seems like we get more grasshoppers during dry weather.
Is there something we can do? Early summer is the time to control grasshoppers. Producers should not wait until they are winged and large, when control is difficult or impossible. Eight to nine adult grasshoppers per square yard should cause alarm to forage producers. That many grasshoppers can eat as much as a cow. Grasshopper problems will not go away until hard freezes come in late fall. Grasshoppers normally build up on field edges, and that is the best place to scout and treat when high numbers begin developing. Treating border areas is much cheaper than treating whole fields. The following partial list of insecticides may be useful in controlling grasshoppers in areas where the number of small grasshoppers has reached the economic threshold. Carefully read and follow all label directions before using any pesticide.

Grasshoppers game
We went to the Grasshoppers game on Sunday . It was another game in the fabulous kids club package. I discovered a new area to watch the game. Below the playground where we spend most of our time, there is a smoking section. It's on the right field line and butts up against the visiting team's bullpen. You can see everything and it's right on top of the field. There was a dude out there w/ cornrows and 4 gold teeth giving the Sandgnats right fielder hell. No cursing, but good things like "it's time to retire if you can't hit this pitcher." A grasshoppers employee came out there and told him to cool it, so I pointed out to the employee that this Randy Moss look-a-like was helping the team more than he was and maybe he should give him the offical Grasshoppers polo shirt he was wearing. Later on the cops were spending some quality time talking to him. When they came back up the ramp, I asked them what he was doing and made the one hand talking motion. The cop nodded and I asked if that was against the law. About 10 seconds later Maria came back from putting the smoking section to use and told me Randy Moss wanted the cops to press charges b/c his tormentee had cursed at him. So let me apologize to those 2 police officers in this forum. Sorry for thinking you were trying to silence the people. Now can you take

G RASSHOPPERS are such amazing creatures that Dan Johnson
This video of Packard grasshoppers ( Melanoplus packardii ) shows a newly observed behaviour. The movement may seem slight, but these individuals are actively pumping their abdomens, to take in more air for their increased metabolism, and possibly also to redistribute body heat by circulating blood and air. This spot under the light bulb is around 35ºC, and the surface of the grasshopper directly under the light is about 40ºC. If they felt uncomfortable they would move away, but, as you can see, they are crowding into the brightly-lit warm spot.
There are also individuals of various sizes, or instars. Instars are the developmental stages nymphs pass through on their way to adulthood. From left to right, they are a 3rd instar, two 5th instars, an adult with a 4th instar perched on its back and a 2nd instar, with a 4th instar at the bottom.

These adult male Packard grasshoppers ( Melanoplus packardii ) display several different behaviours. First, you can see one individual cleaning itself, like a cat washing its face. He starts by cleaning his clypeus (hard upper lip) and his palps (finger-like projections on the mouth), then cleans his antennae, which you will notice have their own muscle control.

Grasshopper information on the Minnesota Soybean Production Website from the Univ. of Minnesota.
http://www.soybeans.umn.edu/crop/insects/grasshoppers.htm
Grasshoppers Grasshopper populations develop during dry springs following long, warm autumns. Under moderate or high moisture, fungal diseases normally keep grasshopper populations in check. Grasshoppers tend to prefer to lay their eggs in untilled soil, such as roadsides and ditches. Damage, therefore, will likely first occur at the margin of fields. An exception is soybeans planted in last years soybean or alfalfa fields; certain grasshopper species will lay eggs in both cropping systems. Grasshopper nymphs look very much like adults, but lack fully developed wings. Grasshoppers feed on leaves and, as soybeans mature, on developing pods. Scouting for grasshoppers should start early in the growing season (late April, early May), because early detection is often instrumental in control. Scouting should start at field edges, fence rows, dirt roads, and ditches. Consider field-edge applications unless grasshoppers occur throughout the field. Thresholds can be based on either grasshopper numbers or soybean defoliation. Thresholds based on grasshopper populations can be estimated by scouting the field (see Scouting) and treatment decisions made according to Table 1. Thresholds based on defoliation include treating when defoliation inside the field exceeds 30% prebloom, or 20% blooming-to-pod-fill. (Be aware that certain species of grasshoppers will lay eggs in soybeans and alfalfa.) Table 4. Summer phenology of 3 major cropland grasshoppers in Minnesota

Introduction
The family Pneumoridae is a group of 17 species distributed along the coast of southern Africa, but also extending northwards into Tanzania and Uganda ( map ). Most species occur in transitional habitat comprising mosaics of bush and grassland, with the rest in forests or desert. All species are highly cryptic in appearance and behavior, being color matched to their particular food plant and rarely noticed except at night when the loud mate location call of the male may be heard 2 km away. There are large differences in the morphology and behavior of adult males and females. Only adult males are capable of flight and may be attracted to light, but when approached during the day generally do not fly. In several species males can either develop an inflated abdomen or mate as a flightless alternative morph without the anatomy and behavior for sexual signaling (Alexander and van Staaden, 1989). Threatened females and nymphs will drop to the ground and feign death (thanatosis), although nymphs may also jump. The family is significant because individuals possess two forms of

by Charles Griffith, M.S. Retired Clinical Psychologist; Private Consultant. Ozark, Arkansas 72949-8810 Editor's note: The following was sent to us as a Letter to the Editor. We thought many of you would be interested in Mr. Griffith's insights and so are including his entire communication unedited.
Having been an edible wild plant enthusiast for years, my wife and I taught classes on the subject at both Yellowstone Park where we worked for three summers in the mid-eighties and in Colorado. Our most recent classes (three successive summers) have been under the auspices of the Colorado Mountain College Rendezvous (a re-enactment of the trappers' rendezvous that were held in the Rocky Mountains between 1810 and ] 840). These events are held each summer in August, usually in one of the National Forests near Fairplay, Colorado, and sponsored by the Colorado Black Powder Association.
Often students want to know if one can survive on wild edible plants alone in an emergency situation. Since I have never attempted a survival experiment, I have not been able to definitively answer that question, but the more I think about the question the more inclined I am to believe that more protein and fat would need to be a part of a survival diet and thus plants alone would probably not be enoughespecially in the Rocky Mountain west where even Euell Gibbons found meager pickings. Plants might sustain someone in the short run a few days or a week or two at most, but it seems that some harvest from the animal kingdom would eventually have to be a part of the survival diet mix unless lots of nuts were available (sorry about that, vegetarians).

It was Survival 101.
Wearing camouflage gear and taste testing leaves and roots probably was not the kind of training NASA's new group of astronauts had anticipated, but that's the way it was.
The 11 astronaut candidates, including educator astronauts, military pilots, physicians, an astrophysicist, an engineer and a Navy SEAL, did Land Survival Training at the Navy's wilderness site near Rangeley, Maine. With them were three Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronauts.
