Extension Entomologist Grasshoppers are among the most widespread and damaging pests in Texas. Approximately 150 species of grasshoppers are known to exist in the state; however, the following five species cause 90 percent of the damage to crops, gardens, trees and shrubs: Differential grasshopper, Melanoplus differentalis . Adults are 1 1/8 to 1 3/4 inches long. Black chevron markings on the hind femur help identify this grasshopper. Black individuals may occur. Moving in from weedy borders, they are very destructive in cultivated crops. They are seldom found in grassland. Red-legged grasshopper, Melanoplus femurrubrum . Adults are 7/8 to 1 1/4 inches long. The hind tibia are red. They are especially damaging to alfalfa and other legumes, but can be an important pest in other crops. They are of very little importance in grassland. Migratory grasshopper

This gallery contains photographs of bush-crickets, crickets and grasshoppers found at Cerknica polje as well as some species from nearby Slivnica hill. In this place I would like to thank Slovene specialists, who helped finding and identifying some of the species. I published a species list of Cerknica polje in the book: `The Vanishing Lake, A monograph on the Lake Cerknica` [in Slovene]. Because I found some more species by now, the list given on this web-page is slightly longer. All photographs are made at Cerknica polje and Slivnica hill unless noted otherwise.

Grasshoppers, Orthoptera, Crickets, Saltatoria in Slovenia
Abstract Saltatoria Cerknica
Grasshoppers were studied during two summer camps by three Dutch orthopterologists in 1997 and 1998 in the Notranjska National Park in the surroundings of Cerknica, Slovenia. In 1997 at least 40 species were found on 9 places by the JNM. In the beginning of August 1998 only minor research on grasshoppers took place and no intensive search was done during a KNNV summercamp. From end August 1998 also some observations from a ZOTKS camp in Sempas are added. Grasshopper records are categorized per region. The order of the visited regions corresponds with the order which has been used in the other papers in this report. The numbers of the localities are indicated on the map on the last page. In the end of this article a systematic survey of the recorded species is given. General information about the visited regions is given in the general introduction of this report. .

WHAT IS A GRASSHOPPER? Like all insects, grasshoppers have 6 legs, 2 antennae, and 3 body parts. Grasshoppers are distinctive because of their large back legs. In fact, jumping legs like these are only found on crickets, grasshoppers, and their relatives. These insects also have leathery front wings (called "tegmina") which help protect the delicate back wings. Females have a long "ovipositor" at the tip of their abdomens which is used to lay eggs. THREE COMMON KENTUCKY GRASSHOPPERS
AND THEIR NATURAL ENEMIES
By D. Shanklin, L. Townsend, R. Bessin, Extension Specialists University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Grasshoppers are familiar to most people; their large "jumping legs" easily identify them. Worldwide, grasshoppers are some of the most serious agricultural pests, most often due to their direct feeding on the harvestable portion of the crop. However, in the United States, pest outbreaks occur most often in the western U. S., or following drought in other, generally wetter regions, including Kentucky. Grasshoppers are insects in the Order Orthoptera. They have an incomplete life cycle, i.e. there are only three stages in its life cycle: the egg, the nymph, and the adult. The nymphal stage can be distinguished from the adult by the nature of the wings. Nymphs have nonfunctional wing pads whereas adults have fully developed, functional wings. The adult wings are folded over the back when not in use. Most adults have two pairs of wings: parchment-like front wings, and membraneous, fan-like hind wings. Mouthparts are the typical chewing type, and a pair of short cerci (appendages) are present at the end of the abdomen. There are 3 species of grasshoppers that are the most common in Kentucky: the redlegged, the two-striped, and the differential grasshopper.

Sources: click on Grasshoppers of Wyoming and the West for a valuable guide to grasshoppers of New Mexico and Wyoming. Grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, katydids and their kin are distinguished primarily by their long hind legs modified for jumping. Most of them can make noise by rubbing together specialized organs on either legs or wings (signals used in courtship etc.), and they have mouth parts modified for chewing various kinds of plants. We begin here we simply listing images of grasshoppers we have photographed on our lands. Identifications will come later. (Click on each image to enlarge.) September 2003 October 2003 This grasshopper, below , known in the popular parlance of old as the "Mexican General", is one of our most spectacular grasshoppers, so colorful that Creationists have cited it as evidence against the theory of evolution "Only an imaginative Creator could have made these color combinations." (Of course, distinctive color patterns like these are hardly unusual in the insect world, or the bird world, etc.) (Click on these images to enlarge them.)

Grasshopper Information and Updates
Click on Thumbnail for larger Picture Insects in this group are generally plant feeders and some can cause serious defoliation of yard plants as well as gardens. Many of these insects overwinter as eggs either in the soil, on or in small branches of host trees. Most take several weeks to develop to adults and the adults then live a long time. Some are active at night whereas others can be found feeding during the day. Twostripped grasshopper Adults are about 1.5 inches long and these are one of the most common species in Idaho yards. They are greenish with two distinctive light stripes down the back. Migratory grasshopper This grasshopper is a pest of rangelands but will also invade yards. They are about 1 inch long and the small portion of the hind leg is red. It prefers waste areas to feed and lay eggs but flower beds will also suffice. Angular winged Katydid Forewings that look like tree leaves are characteristic of these insects. They have short sword-like ovipositors and long thin antennae. Eggs are flat, tan, and laid in overlapping rows on tree limbs. Mormon Cricket Mormon crickets are common in southern Idaho and northern Utah and Nevada. They prefer feeding on range grasses but sometimes invade crops or yards. They can be seen marching in large numbers. Most are dark reddish brown or dark greenish brown and the females have long, sword shaped ovipositors.

Grasshoppers of the Apocalypse
Margo Baldwin, president of Chelsea Green Publishing (books), writes in their latest catalogue, received here at the office: Just when we think it can't get worse, it does! George W. and his greedy band of corporate-enabled neo-con thugs have been unleashed upon the world, and it increasingly feels like an apocalypse may be at hand. Not their fundamentalist Hollywood version, but the real thing: the approaching collapse of basic life support systems of earth. Wow! Meanwhile, brain-dead and tethered to the feeding tube of our out-of-control consumerist culture we sit, anaesthetized by the never-ending terrischiavomichaeljacksonbarrybondspopejohnpaulfuneral drip, drip, drip of "life support" that maintains our vegetative state. (No wonder the rabid right goes ballistic when a feeding tube gets pulled. Imagine their horror if the real feeding tubes, those 36-inch, flat-screened beautifully reflective pools of narcissistic machinery got disconnected.) Well, there's a brainful of topics and misconnections for you. "Fundamentalist Hollywood"? The funeral of John Paul II and coverage of Michael Jackson?
