Demanding system requirements, shortfalls of GUIDE Plus+ program, a lot of software to install Summary There’s no denying the incredible picture improvement of HD broadcasts over regular analog TV. The ATI HDTV Wonder does a good job of allowing you to enjoy this amazing video on your computer at a fraction of the cost of an HDTV. Of course, an HDTV is often much larger than a computer monitor and if you get an HDTV set, chances are you will just get an HD tuner from your cable company – allowing you to enjoy all of the HD cable channels as well as the over-the-air broadcasts. Unfortunately, the system requirements are quite demanding – in our opinion more so than what even ATI suggests. Even if you have a powerful enough system, HD performance is dependent upon your proximity to a broadcast tower and other environmental factors. As a result, you really won’t know if the HDTV Wonder will work well with your system and in your house until you actually try it. Considering it may take several hours to set up the HDTV Wonder and get it working properly, this is just too much time and effort for the average computer user to dedicate to such a project.

Albatron K8SLI motherboard review
Posted by: Nightmare on 21st of Sep 2005 One of the available nVidia nForce4 SLI boards that Ben missed in his round up is the Albatron K8SLI. This board promises excellent performance for the enthusiast wrapped up in a very petite package (just 293 x 198mm), all at a bargain price. Can it keep up with the big boys? Read on to find out. AMD nForce 4 SLI Motherboard Group Test Posted by: Ben on 13th of Sep 2005 PCI Express isn’t only designed for video cards, so there is a real benefit from installing more than one PCI-Express slot on a motherboard even if you don’t plan on running an SLI setup. The trouble is, that most motherboards only have the smaller 8x PCI-E slots rather than the full length 16x slots needed for most cards. Because of this, if you plan on using an SLI graphics card setup, you are limited in your motherboard chipset options. If you are using an AMD Athlon 64 setup, as the majority of enthusiasts now seem to be doing, the only chipset worth looking at is the nForce 4. Today we have the top 6 Athlon 64 compatible SLI motherboards on the market going head to head in our group test. Sony MDR-V900 headphones review Posted by: Nightmare on 10th of Sep 2005 Oh, what a difference a year can make. When I bought my Sony MDR-V700s in early 2004, the V-900s cost twice as much (over $200), and have identical specs, so I went with the V-700s. A year later, Sony has replaced its entire line of headphones, and you can now pick up the V-900s on the cheap. Are they worth it? Read on.

Animation
Heart of all animation is creating motion from still pictures. In simplest form computer-based animation is similar to traditional frame-by-frame animation techniques and the computer displays those frames in rapid succession. Now low-priced computer animation programs packages contain more tools: visual effect tools can create dissolves, wipes, and other television-style visual transitions between scenes; path animation tools record the movement of visual objects as the artist drags them around the screen and play back motions on command; Tweening tools can fill in a number of frames automatically to smooth the movement between frames. And most powerful animation programs include tools for working with animated objects in 3 dimensions, adding depth to the scene on the screen. Submitter: Jin Xu
Audio Digitizer
A device which converts an analog sound signal into a digital sound signal. The computer only understands digital sound signals so the audio digitizer converts the sound from an analog to a digital sound 'understandable' by the computer. The digital signal can then be stored as a data file in computer's storage medium (disk drive) and played back on the computer's speakers.

GP GPU General-Purpose Computation Using Graphics Hardware Forums
Introduction
GPGPU stands for General-Purpose computation on GPUs . With the increasing programmability of commodity graphics processing units (GPUs), these chips are capable of performing more than the specific graphics computations for which they were designed. They are now capable coprocessors, and their high speed makes them useful for a variety of applications. The goal of this page is to catalog the current and historical use of GPUs for general-purpose computation. Contribute

Computer Graphics Hardware Overview
Display Devices
Computer Graphics can use many different output devices, such as monitors, printer, plotter, etc. but the most common display device is the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor. In a CRT the focusing system acts like a light lens with a focal length such that the center of focus is the screen. The horizontal and vertical deflectors allow the electron beam to be focused on any spot on the screen. The screen is coated with a special organic compound called a phosphor. For color systems there are groups of three different phosphors, one to produce red shades, one for green shades, and one for blue shades. Electrons hit the screen phosphor molecules and cause a ground state to singlet excited state transition. Most of the phosphors relax back to the ground state by emitting a photon of light which is called fluorescence. This happens very rapidly so that all of the molecules which fluoresce do so in under a millisecond. Some of the molecules convert from an excited singlet state to an excited triplet state in a process called inter-system crossing. This is quantum mechanically forbidden, which means it still happens but only by a relatively small fraction of the phosphors and is a slower process. These phosphors then emit light, called phosphorescence, that decays slower but still rapidly (in about 15-20 milliseconds) so there is the need to refresh the screen by redrawing the image. The physical process is depicted below: Phosphors are characterized by color (usually red, green, or blue) and persistence, which is the time for the emitted light to decay to 10 % of the initial intensity. High persistence phosphors allow for a lower refresh rate to avoid flicker, e.g., the original IBM PC monochrome monitor had a high persistence phosphor. This allowed it to have good resolution for text with inexpensive electronics. However, this is poor for animation since a "trail" is left with moving objects.

3D Graphics Hardware: Where We Have Been, Where We Are Now, and Where We Are Going
Dan Baum
Silicon Graphics Computer Systems What can we expect to see in 3D graphics hardware in the coming years? What markets will drive next generation designs? Where will PC graphics be in the year 2000? These questions are frequently debated by users, application vendors and manufacturers of 3D graphics hardware. In this article, I will offer some views and opinions on these and related questions. First, I will briefly review a bit of the history of hardware accelerated graphics. Next, I will give an overview of the current state of graphics hardware. Finally, I will discuss what directions graphics hardware will be going in the future.
History
The IRIS 1400 was an example of what is called a first generation graphics system. The generation refers to the targeted feature set for which the system runs at full performance. In the case of the IRIS 1400, this was flat-shaded polygons. This system supported immediate mode graphics, and was the first interactive raster system used for applications such as CAD and scientific visualization. Second generation systems raised the realism level by rendering polygons that were Gouraud-shaded, Phong-lit and z-buffered. Additionally, raw transformation and scan-conversion performance jumped considerably. The first example of a second generation system was the Hewlett-Packard SRX, followed by the Silicon Graphics GT, which was the first system to break the 100,000 polygon/second mark. The improved shading capabilities allowed these workstations to become tools for applications such as modeling, animation and molecular modeling.

Displayed representation of a scene or an object that appears to have three axes of reference: height, width, and depth (x, y, and z). 3D Pipeline

The process of 3D graphics can be divided into three-stages: tessellation, geometry, and rendering. In the tessellation stage, a described model of an object is created, and the object is then converted to a set of polygons. The geometry stage includes transformation, lighting, and setup. The rendering stage, which is critical for 3D image quality, creates a two dimensional display from the polygons created in the geometry stage.
