Penn Computing The way you design with pictures depends on the nature of the information you want to present and the needs and interests of your audience. The overriding fact of graphics on the Web is that the larger the picturelarge in square inches, number of colors, or unneeded resolutionthe larger the file size and the slower to load. Viewers who mainly want textual information in a hurry will resent graphics that seem empty and merely decorative. Other viewers may be willing to exercise great patience to receive images of compelling beauty or dramatic illustrative power. However you use graphics, you owe it to your viewers to make the files as fast to load as your goals permit. The following technical notes include techniques for doing this as well as other considerations. 1. File formats: Learn to work with both GIF and JPEG. For the present, choose GIF or JPEG based on the combination of characteristics that best suits your requirements and your image-processing software. 2. Use inline graphics except for special purposes. A graphic element placed in an HTML file so that it displays in linear sequence among with the other page elements is called an "inline" graphic. To display it properly, the browser must be capable of recognizing and displaying the graphic's file format in inline form. Graphic files that a browser cannot display in line must be handed off to a "helper application" for display, which interrupts the continuity of the viewer's experience of the page. Inline graphics can be directly manipulated in composing page layouts, and the trend is for browsers to accommodate more types of inline formats.

This page lets you view Auto Composed Graphics in both colour and Black/White.
_About the graphics
When you view the graphics, you can look at different ways to them: As being abstract graphics that you like or not but, also with keeping in mind that they are Auto-Composed. This means that they are created by my software automatically - running an algorithm that produces unique variations, based on a certain creation concept. These algorithms were programmed in both GFA-BASIC and GFA-ASSEMBLER on the ATARI-ST computer. The main goal of my research in this field was to let the machine produce these graphics automatically without being just a calculator. The graphics are not calculated but created(!) and also created fast (less than a second up to some seconds).
The idea behind my technique of creating software for this purpose is to reflect the composing 'game' - 'played' by the artist when making his abstracts. This is (or can be) a process of intuition, random behaviour and unexpected moves - with a backup of talent, experience (+mannerism) and inspiration. How to transfer this with a computer language?

_The MIR concept
The first set of six graphics were Auto Composed by a routine that is called MIR. First, it starts to create an 'ugly' symmetrical picture (2nd row - right picture). It is composing this continuously for a about 20 seconds. Some stages are displayed until the time for this first composing stage is passed. Then, some hocus pocus (secret of the cook) is done and sequentially - each 3 seconds - 9 pictures will appear (like the first and last 2 that are displayed here). After this, the cycle starts again. It is fun to see beautiful extractions appear that are based on the first 'ugly' composing stage.

Introduction
There are many graphics libraries out there, for various languages and platforms. Some provide only low-level access to the framebuffer, allowing the display to be controlled by standard byte or file operations. Others provide a set of drawing primitives to draw not just pixels, but also lines, circles, boxes, etc. Besides being more intuitive to the programmer, these primitives can sometimes be accelarated, giving primitive-based solutions an edge in both usability and performance. This design goes a step further, by composing the image of logical units that can be manipulated independently. This provides additional expressive power and potential for performance gains.
Goals
The goal of this design is to serve as a foundation for a GUI environment, as well as providing a graphics library on which graphical applications (such as games) can be built. The aim is to provide functions directly matching the needs of the application, providing ultimate power of expression to the programmer and all information that could aid optimization to the underlying implementation. At the same time, the library should not become overly bloated by providing functionality that would rarely be needed by any one application.
Modularity
To resolve the conflict between catering closely to any application's needs, and not burdening an application with functionality that it doesn't need or use, the library should be modularized wherever sensible. Functions that would often go together in that applications tend to use either none or many of them will be bundled together in a module. Only those modules that an application uses will have to be installed to enable that application to run.

    Stylesheets
The point has probably been well made by now that HTML is not a very good vehicle for providing specific information about layout and presentation. There are no mechanisms for an author to specify how she wants specific elements rendered, or to control aspects of page layout. While one of the strengths of HTML is this very independence from presentation details, it has become clear that some form of presentation control is needed. Stylesheets are the answer to this problem. It provides the other half of the equation, the half that is currently not provided by HTML. While HTML provides information about content, stylesheets will provide information about how to render specific elements. Unfortunately, while several mechanisms for providing stylesheets are under development, there is no clear standard at the time of this writing. We cannot tell you what stylesheet mechanism(s) will become standard, but we can tell you about the current contenders. Keep your hopes up, though: because of the importance of stylesheets, it is highly likely that a usable standard will emerge within the next year.
    Some Stylesheet Proposals
In these proposals, the stylesheets contain information about how elements should be rendered, whether this is font information, justification information, etc. At the time of this writing, the syntax for these stylesheets has not yet been fully designed.

    Physical versus logical character emphasis
Since HTML (and also SGML) is designed to be a device independent language for describing the content of documents, most of the elements within it aren't intended to give direct control to the author over how the final page layout will look. The major exceptions to this are in the character highlighting elements. There are two types of character highlighting elements physical and logical. The physical styles involve things like "italic font", and "boldface"; while the logical styles are things like "emphasis", "citation", and "strong." It is strongly recommended that you employ the logical styles rather than the physical styles in your documents. Using the I element to render text in italics will only be effective on those browsers which are capable of displaying italics which all browsers are not guaranteed to be able to do. It is far better to encode semantic content to describe things in terms of logical styles and then allow the browser to display that semantic structure as best it can, given its display capabilities. So, instead of

    An aside
I am often asked what my workflow is on projects. I work a little differently than many designers I know, in that I start with a vector program almost every time. I find the object based environment, one-click proportion changes, easy fills and strokes, etc., are so much faster for the conceptual stage. Use a fixed selection size to define a pattern or create a background tile. Technically, you can use a very small sample and achieve a textured tile, but it is usually best to select at least 50px by 50px, more if the texture compresses well. Text as selection used to create textured text. Create a new layer and fill the selection with a textured pattern. This is a magnified view of the texture. We've all seen, and perhaps been repelled by, background texture. Some circa 1997/98 Web backgrounds may end up in virtual museums that our grandkids will find inspiring, but , thankfully, we have moved past background mania. The trend, certainly in commercial sites, is plain, plain, plain, broken occasionally by a drop shadow or two. But keep an eye on the leading edge of commercial sites. There is texture there. Maybe it never went away, or maybe it is entering a rebirth period, in a much more subtle form. I think we will see more and more creative use of texture that enhances navigation and communication, rather than detracts.

    http://computing.scs.uiuc.edu/sci_software/manuals/raster3d/raster3d.html
The Raster3D molecular graphics package consists of a core program render and a number of ancillary programs which read atomic coordinates from Brookhaven PDB files to produce scene descriptions for input to render. Raster3D can also render images composed using other programs such as Molscript and XtalView Index Programs in the Raster3D package Hints for composing pictures
    SYNOPSIS
Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring one shadowing light source, additional non-shadowing light sources, specular highlighting, transparency, and Phong shaded surfaces. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware. Four common image output formats are supported: AVS, JPEG, TIFF, and SGI libimage. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). The Raster3D rendering program can be integrated with ImageMagick to expand the flexibility of output formats and interactive use. Ancillary programs are provided for the generation of object descriptions based on atomic coordinates stored in Brookhaven PDB format. Although the rendering program is not specific to molecular graphics, Raster3D is not intended as a general purpose ray-tracing program. Some of the algorithms used have been chosen for speed rather than generality; that is, they happen to work well for the types of images the program is intended for, but may produce odd results if used for very different types of image.
