How it works
  • Two objects can be seen: a JFrame that holds the picture and a JPanel on which the picture is drawn.
  • Think of the JFrame as a frame that holds a picture and the JPanel is the canvas on which we paint and place in the frame.
  • When the JFrame is made visible, the paintComponent of any component contained within it is invoked. DrawRectangle 's method paintComponent overrides that of its superclass JPanel to give the drawing instructions.
  • The Graphics object passed to the paintComponent method is a rendering engine , an object that, in this case, translates drawing instructions into the actual picture we see.
  • Always include super.paintComponent(Graphics g) as the first line when overriding the paintComponent method of a component. Without that instruction, some very weird behavior can result.
  • This example uses Java's Swing components.

Hiram was a 1991 intern with the Detroit Free Press. Try to get to know everyone in the newsroom. Keeps you in editors' and people's minds when good projects arise ... allows you to get their help when you need it. Create your own projects/take initiative. Don't wait to be told what to do ... create projects you think would interest people ... do your own reporting when you can. Learn all the programs used by your art department. Makes you the person others have to go to for advice. Learn about other departments that you deal with. Color lab, engraving, composing, etc. Become a liaison with one of those departments; show that you are a leader. Know all your deadlines and stick to them. Show that you can be counted on and trusted. Read the newspaper: Know what's going on. Be informed of what's going on in your city and in the news so that you are prepared for meetings. Help for EDIMAGE
PURPOSE "edimage" is an interactive program that performs editing of gray scale or color byte images. Image are displayed and edited on a monitor. Images may be painted with a brush, parts copied and filled, lines drawn, and text annotation added. EXECUTION Before running "edimage" the appropriate display device must be allocated. "edimage" starts out by copying the input image(s) to the output image(s), if they exist. If color images are to be edited then there must be three input images (in red, green, blue order) and the 'COLOR keyword must be specified. The default is to edit one image in gray scale mode . The Vicar size field is used to copy a window from the input image to the output image and only edit the window area. There may be extra input and output files: these are used for IBIS graphics files and color lookup tables. By default "edimage" will clear the image planes before the session begins( SCREEN ="CLEAR"). The 'NOCLR keywork preserves whatever was on the image planes before "edimage" was invoked; This can be used to piece together a lot of unrelated images displayed previously with IDX, etc. The TEST keyword allows "edimage" to be run in a test mode . (See under the help for the TEST parameter.) Examples: edimage INPUT.IMG OUTPUT.IMG

When we step outside each morning to pick up our newspaper, most of us don't consider the technology needed to produce it. From the moment a reporter starts on a story to the point when you read the headlines, anywhere from several dozen to several hundred people have applied the latest technology to put the news in your hands. Gone are typewriters and mechanical typesetting machines. Modern newspaper staffs depend on computers, digital imaging, satellite technology, and even robots to get the job done. Reporters write their stories on computerterminals tied into a central computer network. From it, editors can access the stories, edit them, and electronically format them for layout on a page. The final edited story is then photo-printed and passed to a designer, who creates a full-page layout on a

CREATIVE COMPUTING VOL. 9, NO. 12 / DECEMBER 1983 / PAGE 97 Daily Free Software Picks Graphics and music for the color computer. (evaluation) Joe Devlin. Graphics and Music for the Color Computer Semidraw Semidraw is a sketching program that allows you to draw on the screen of your television or monitor. It is called Semidraw because it makes use of the Color Computer semi-graphics modes. Along with the advantages of text coexistent on the screen with graphics, the semi-graphics mode allows you to have up to 15 colors onscreen at one time, rather than the maximum of four available in other Color Computer graphic modes. The problem with the semi-graphics mode is that it provides a rather strangely shaped pixel, one that is much longer than it is tall. The creators of Semidraw have evened out this monstrosity by creating a cursor that is relatively large, but symmetrical. The program starts with a detailed semigraphics drawing lesson for the novice. If you prefer, you can skip this part and start with a blank screen or recall a previously saved image. Semidraw can apply color to the screen wherever the cursor can be moved. The cursor is moved around the screen using either the right joystick or the arrow keys on the keyboard. To draw or set a dot simply press the joystick button or the @ key. The color of the cursor indicates the color of the dot you will set. You can change the color of the cursor with the left joystick or by pressing the C key and the number of the color you want.

Graphics on the homepage This is one of the fine arts.
I really hate it when I click on a link and then must sit there twiddling my thumbs while the file is transmitted. Tantalizingly enough, the message says "Done" but that applied only to the initial text file. Meanwhile, the big images keep coming ... and I hope this time they will be worth all that digital exercise. Most of the time, I visit sites of this kind once and never again. What is needed is a contradiction in terms: "the perfect compromise" between image quality, image size, and file size. Cameras take pictures in pixels = dots.
The key measure is resolution, expressed in dots per inch, or dpi.
The higher the dpi, the greater the quality, the larger the computer file size. Tip 1: Total file size, including that of the associated images, should be under 20 K. If one needs more than one or two images, one should create several files to link them to. Tip 2: If at all possible, create the image at a very low resolution, in few colors, in the size needed for the screen. Later resizing will not affect the file size but will affect the quality. Example for creating a color image by use of a scanner: BEFORE YOU SCAN or PRESCAN, set the resolution to 72 or 75 dpi, set the colors to 256 (VGA) and set the size to fairly small, such as 2 or 3" wide with the height proportional, or 50% max. of a small photo. AFTER YOU SCAN, crop the image to get rid of any unwanted areas or frames. Save. FINALLY, save in .gif or .jpeg format. Check the file size: if the image file is a bit big (e.g., much more than 20 K), you can adjust the file without corrupting it too much. But if the image file is much too large, rescan it with lower settings, or reduce the number of colors. See

    SYNOPSIS
Raster3D uses a fast Z-buffer algorithm to produce high quality pixel images featuring one shadowing light source, additional non-shadowing light sources, specular highlighting, transparency, and Phong shaded surfaces. Output is in the form of a pixel image with 24 bits of color information per pixel plus one matte channel. Raster3D does not depend on graphics hardware. The rendering program currently supports output to files in AVS, JPEG, TIFF, PNG and SGI libimage format. To actually view or manipulate the images produced, you must also have installed an image viewing package (e.g. John Cristy's ImageMagick or the SGI libimage utilities). The Raster3D rendering program can be integrated with ImageMagick to expand the flexibility of output formats and interactive use.
