          Ulysses Simpson Grant Born: Birthplace:
Point Pleasant, Ohio Ulysses Simpson Grant was born (as Hiram Ulysses Grant) at Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. He graduated from West Point in 1843 and served without particular distinction in the Mexican War. In 1848 he married Julia Dent. He resigned from the army in 1854, after warnings from his commanding officer about his drinking habits, and for the next six years held a wide variety of jobs in the Middle West. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he sought a command and soon, to his surprise, was made a brigadier general. His continuing successes in the western theaters, culminating in the capture of Vicksburg, Miss., in 1863, brought him national fame and soon the command of all the Union armies. Grant's dogged, implacable policy of concentrating on dividing and destroying the Confederate armies brought the war to an end in 1865. The next year, he was made full general. In 1868, as Republican candidate for president, Grant was elected over the Democrat, Horatio Seymour. From the start, Grant showed his unfitness for the office. His cabinet was weak, his domestic policy was confused, and many of his intimate associates were corrupt. The notable achievement in foreign affairs was the settlement of controversies with Great Britain in the Treaty of London (1871), negotiated by his able secretary of state, Hamilton Fish.

Ulysses Simpson Grant
American General Ulysses S. Grant played the principal role in the Union defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War, his tactical and strategic abilities proving to be superior to those of his primary foe, Robert Edward Lee. Although described as a drunkard and a butcher for the heavy casualties he experienced, Grant understood the importance of committing all military and economic assets to total warfare. In achieving victory, Grant preserved the Union of the United States of America. Neither Grant's civilian nor military beginnings were remarkable. Born the oldest of six children to a Point Pleasant, Ohio, tannery owner on April 27, 1822, Grant received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in 1839. Upon reporting to West Point, Grant decided to changed his birth name from Hiram Ulysses to Ulysses Hiram to avoid the embarrassing initials "HUG." An administrative error on the part of the congressman who nominated him for the academy recorded the name as Ulysses Simpson. To avoid further confusion and red tape, Grant made no effort to correct the error and readily became U. S. Grant. Grant showed no great potential at West Point, graduation twenty-first among thirty-nine cadets in the class of 1843. Although horsemanship had proved to be Grant's most outstanding attribute at the academy, the new lieutenant's commission was in the infantry, and he reported to the Fourth Regiment at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, after graduation.

Fast Fact: Ulysses S. Grant came to the Presidency a great military hero. Biography: Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms." Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War he fought under Gen. Zachary Taylor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was working in his father's leather store in Galena, Illinois. He was appointed by the Governor to command an unruly volunteer regiment. Grant whipped it into shape and by September 1861 he had

Grant worked as a firewood peddler, real estate salesman and as a farmer near St. Louis , before becoming a clerk in his family's tannery and leather store in Galenta, Illinois.
An opponent of slavery , on the outbreak of the Civil War , Grant offered his services to the Union Army . He was commissioned as colonel of the 21st Illinois Volunteers. Even before he had engaged the Confederate forces, Grant was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general and placed in charge of the District of South-East Missouri.

Although he was a successful general, he is considered by historians to be one of America's worst presidents, who led an administration plagued by severe scandal and corruption Historians agree that Grant was not personally corrupt; it was his subordinates in the executive branch who were at fault. He is instead mostly criticized for not taking a strong stance against the corruption, and not acting to stop it. More recent treatments have emphasized the accomplishments of his administration, including his struggle to preserve Reconstruction , and looked with more understanding upon its shortcomings.

Presidential Accomplishments
U.S Grant officially ended his military career when he resigned his commission as general of the U.S. Army on March 4, 1869, the year he became President of the United States. As the hero of the Civil War, he was the popular choice to lead the United States through the problems that existed following the war between the States. The American people hoped to end the nation's turmoil when they elected Grant to office. But many historians determined that Grant did little to move the country forward. Looking to Congress for direction, he often seemed bewildered. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.
