Grant was the Civil War supreme commander who rode his war-hero status to the White House and into one of the rockiest two-term presidencies ever. Grant's early life showed little indication that the world would ever hear of him. An Ohio tanner's son, Ulysses was small, sensitive, and quiet. The other children mistook his shyness for stupidity, nicknaming him "Useless." An outstanding horseman, Grant had an otherwise undistinguished career at West Point. After graduating, he was put in command of infantry divisions but was forced to resign for insubordination to his superiors. After leaving the Army in disgrace, he failed at half a dozen jobs in as many years. Through these difficult times, his wife, Julia Dent Grant, stuck by him, seeing qualities in Grant that the rest of the world did not. Julia knew that he would one day make something of himself.

Ulysses Grant has never been obvious material for a biography because he behaved too well. Writing about his virtues can quickly turn into homilies about what a gentleman he was. Some care to concentrate their energies into proving he was a butcher, a drunkard or a racist. Let's examine the third charge, specifically that U.S. Grant was an anti-Semite.
The order is
Even before General Orders 11, Grant had occasionally expressed anti-Semitic sentiments in his correspondence. In November, he had written to General Hurlbut in Jackson, "The Israelites especially should be kept out." The next day he wrote General Webster a dispatch which stated, "Give orders to all the conductors on the road that no Jews are to be permitted to travel on the railroad south from any point... they are such an intolerable nuisance that the department must be purged of them." This communication is equally, if not more offensive than General Orders No. 11.

Ulysses S. Grant Order: 18th President Schuyler Colfax Henry Wilson March 4 March 4 ... Republican Ulysses S. Grant April 27 July 23 ) was a Union general in the American Civil War and the 18th President of the United States Grant has been described by military historian J. F. C. Fuller as "the greatest general of his age and one of the greatest strategists of any age." He won many important battles, rose to become general-in-chief of all Union armies , and is credited with winning the war. Although Grant was a successful general, he is considered by historians to be one of America's least successful presidents , who led an administration plagued by scandal and corruption . They agree that Grant was not personally corrupt; it was his subordinates in the executive branch who were at fault. He is instead mostly criticized for not taking a strong stance against the corruption, and not acting to stop it. More recent treatments have emphasized the accomplishments of his administration, including his struggle to preserve Reconstruction . His support for the legal rights of blacks to vote and hold public office were unpopular at the time, but have gained him more respect in modern times.

The man we know as Ulysses S. Grant was actually named Hiram Ulysses Grant. As a boy he was known as "Lyss". Thomas Hamer, the Congrssman who appointed Grant to West Point, forgot all about Hiram. Remembering that Grant's mother's maiden name was Simpson and thinking that was Lyss Grant's middle name, he filled out the application in the name of "Ulysses S. Grant".
When Grant arrived at West Point and discovered that the Academy had him registered under the wrong name, he tried to get the error corrected. He was told that it didn't matter what he or his parents thought his name was, the official government application said his name was "Ulysses S." and that application could not be changed.
If Hiram U. Grant wanted to attend West Point, he would have to change his name. Biography:
Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms."

Ulysses S. Grant on U. S. Postage Stamps
As an outcome of a great American military victory it is not unusual for the victor to be viewed by the American public as a natural leader and an eminently suitable candidate for the presidency. So it was with Ulysses S. Grant who was swept into office in the election of 1868 by an enthusiastic public as the 18th President of the United States. He was reelected in 1872. In civilian or presidential garb his portrait appeared on five U.S. postage stamps. In his uniform, as general it appeared twice. Civil War luminaries were honored in an 1890-93 series of U.S. postage stamps and Grant appeared on a chocolate colored five cent issue. (Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue No. 223, 255 and 270. No. 223 lacks the triangles used in upper left and right corners of subsequent issues). In 1898 this stamp was reissued in blue. (Scott Catalogue No. 281)
In 1902 the same portrait of Grant that was used in the 1890-93 series was reissued in brown on a four cent stamp. (Scott Catalogue No. 303 and 314A)
In 1923 this photo of a portly Grant was printed on an eight cent olive green stamp. (Scott Catalogue No. 560, 589, 640, 666 [overprinted "Kans."] and 677 [overprinted "Nebr."]) It is similar to the likeness that appears on both the

Ulysses S. Grant
Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio, the future military hero grew up in neighboring Georgetown. He worked on the family farm and became skilled with handling horses. An appointment to West Point was secured through his father’s efforts, despite Grant’s lack of interest in a military career. He graduated in 1843 in the bottom half of his class, having impressed few because of his unmilitary bearing, but enjoying success with mathematics and horsemanship. His early tastes ran heavily toward novels and art. His first military experience was gained in the Mexican War (1846-1848). He initially served with the Quartermaster Corps where he gained a lasting understanding of supply issues, but later saw action. Grant would look back on the American military activities in Mexico with contempt. In 1852, Grant was assigned to Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Territory and later to Fort Humboldt in northern California. The climate's dreariness and separation from his wife and sons apparently led Grant to a dependence on alcohol , an issue that led to his resignation from the service in 1854.

Grant Home - Galena
On August 18, 1865, Galena celebrated the return of its Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant. Following a jubilant procession, much flag waving, and speeches, a group of Galena citizens presented the General with a handsomely furnished house on Bouthillier Street. The house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site. On August 18, 1865, Galena greeted Grant with a grand celebration. A "grand triumphal arch" spanned Main Street, and a holiday atmosphere prevailed with a jubilant procession, speeches, and evening fireworks. Julia Grant recalled that "there was a tremendous and enthusiastic outpouring of people to welcome him....After a glorious triumphal ride around the hills and valleys, so brilliant with smiles and flowers, we were conducted to a lovely villa exquisitely furnished with everything good taste could desire."
The Grant Home
The brick house, which was designed by William Dennison, had been constructed in 1860 for former City Clerk Alexander J. Jackson. Thomas B. Hughlett, on behalf of only a small group of local Republicans, purchased the house for $2,500 in June 1865 and presented it to Grant two months later. The house is typical of the Italianate Bracketed style, which is characterized by well-defined rectilinear shapes, projecting eaves supported by brackets, low-pitched roof, and balustraded balconies over covered porches.

Ulysses Simpson Grant
The best evidence of the changes that had occurred in warfare from Jomini to Clausewitz can be found in the campaigns of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The latter was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio but through confusion at West Point he became Ulysses Simpson Grant. Appointed to the military academy, he found it distasteful and hoped that Congress would abolish the institution, freeing him. He excelled only in horsemanship for that he had displayed a capability early in life and graduated in 1843, 2lst out of 39 graduates. Posted to the 4th Infantry, since there were no vacancies in the dragoons, he served as regimental quartermaster during most of the Mexican War. Nonetheless he frequently led a company in combat under Zachary Taylor in northern Mexico.
He came to greatly admire his chief but was transferred with his regiment to Winfield Scott's army operating from the coast. He received brevets for Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. With the resumption of peace he was for a time stationed in Mexico, a country which he came to admire greatly, and then was posted to the West coast. Separated from his wife, he tried numerous business ventures to raise enough capital to bring her to the coast but proved singularly unsuccessful. On July 31, 1854, he resigned his captaincy amid rumors of heavy drinking and warnings of possible disciplinary action by his post commander.
His return to civilian life proved unsuccessful. Farming on his father-inlaw's land was a failure, as was the real estate business and attempts to gain engineering and clerk posts in St. Louis. He finally became a clerk in a family leather goods store in Galena, which was run by his two younger brothers. Before he had been there long the Civil War broke out. Offering his services to the War Department and to General George B. McClellan in Ohio, he met with no success in gaining an appointment.
