Ulysses S. Grant, Jr. One of San Diego's most distinguished residents was Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., [second]* son of the famous military president. Mr. Grant was born in Bethel, Ohio, on July 22, 1852, at a time when his illustrious father was a lieutenant in the Fourth regiment, U.S. Army. Mr. Grant attended Emerson Institute, prepared for college at Exeter and took his A. B. from Harvard University in 1874 and his LL.B. from Columbia two years later. He was admitted to the bar in New York in 1876 and was for a time assistant U.S. attorney in New York, southern district. He married Josephine Chaffee in 1880. His wife was the daughter of Senator Chaffee of Colorado. Forced by ill health to seek a milder climate, Mr. Grant and his family selected San Diego and came here in 1893. In San Diego, Mr. Grant became interested in real estate. His faith in the future of the then sleepy hillside town was shown when he launched construction of the U.S. Grant hotel. Construction of the hotel was held up two years because of the financial difficulties caused by the San Francisco fire in 1906, but the project was completed, partially through funds obtained by the sale of Grant's memoirs. Mr. Grant had an intimate knowledge of his father's experiences in the White House inasmuch as he was secretary to his father, President Grant, for eighteen months during his second term. Mr. Grant was very active politically. He was a delegate at large to the G.0.P. conventions of 1900 and 1904 and a presidential elector in 1904 and 1908. He ran for U.S. senator in 1904 but was unsuccessful.

original name HIRAM ULYSSES GRANT (b. April 27, 1822, Point Pleasant, Ohio, U.S.d. July 23, 1885, Mount McGregor, N.Y.), U.S. general, commander of the Union armies during the late years (1864-65) of the American Civil War and 18th president of the United States (1869-77).
Early life.
Grant was the son of Jesse Root Grant, a tanner, and Hannah Simpson Grant. Detesting the work around his father's tannery, Ulysses performed his share of chores on farmland owned by his father, developing considerable skill in handling horses. Jesse secured for Ulysses an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1839. Ulysses had no interest in military life but accepted the appointment, realizing that the alternative was no further education. Ulysses decided to reverse his original name and enroll as Ulysses Hiram; his appointment to West Point was erroneously made in the name Ulysses S. Grant, the name he eventually accepted, maintaining that the middle initial did not stand for anything. At West Point, Grant ranked 21st in a class of 39 but distinguished himself in horsemanship and showed considerable ability in mathematics. Upon graduation in 1843, he was assigned as a brevet second lieutenant to the 4th U.S. Infantry, stationed near St. Louis, Mo. There he fell in love with Julia Boggs Dent, whom he married in 1848. They had four children.

President Ulysses S. Grant
American History Study Guide Ulysses S. Grant "Let us have peace," declared Ulysses S. Grant in a letter in which he accepted the Republican Party nomination for president. The Civil War (1861-65) had ended four years earlier. Outgoing president Andrew Johnson (1808-1875; see entry in volume 2) had survived a vote of impeachment (a legislative hearing charging a public official with misconduct while in office). The trial marked the first time a president had been impeached. Johnson had initiated the policy of Reconstruction (a federally supervised rebuilding of the South) to help bring back into the Union the Southern states that had seceded (separated). But some Republicans wanted to punish the South for having left the Union and having engaged in war. Grant's remark, "Let us have peace," was intended for those who wanted to penalize the Southern states. He wanted all Americans to put the conflict behind them.

About the eighteenth President of the United States Ulysses S. Grant, his birth, death, biography, description, facts and quotes.
18th President ULYSSES SIMPSON GRANT Born: April 27, 1822, Point Pleasant, Ohio. Died: July 23, 1885, Mount McGregor resort, N.Y., ending his battle with throat cancer. Career: Sent to West Point by his father against his will, graduated near bottom of his class, army commission, career officer, but forced to resign because of heavy drinking. After unsuccessful farming and real estate ventures, Grant (age 38) returned home for a job as clerk in his father's store. The Civil War rescued him from his cycle of failure, as he won a commission as colonel of volunteers. Due to a combination of luck and military genius, he rose through the ranks to the position of general in chief of all Union armies. After his service in the White House, Grant incurred a debt of $16 million in a disastrous venture on Wall Street, and wrote his best-selling Memoirs in an effort to restore his family's fortunes. Personal Life: A devoted family man, Grant was deeply dependent on his plump wife, Julia. His favorite among his 5 children was Nellie, a celebrated beauty who enjoyed a spectacular White House wedding at age 17.

[Much was written about U. S. Grant by the early newspapers. A series of articles written in the July 30th issue of the Winfield Courier concerning Grant, after his death was announced, made me realize why he was so revered by citizens of our country at that time. I have put in the series of articles in this one issue. After I completed these, I consulted the following book, THE CIVIL WAR DICTIONARY, REVISED EDITION, BY MARK M. BOATNER III, 1987. It gives a more complete picture of the career of this amazing man. MAW] WINFIELD, COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS, THURSDAY, JULY 30, 1885. DEATH OF GRANT. The General Passes Quietly Away, Surrounded by His Family and Physicians. He was Unconscious at the Last. The Grief of Mrs. Grant and Children. Before his death he left the choice of a burial spot to Colonel Fred K. Grant.

Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant was a man most commonly known for his victorious leadership in the Civil War, which was only comparable to his efforts to help mend a divided Union as the 18th President.
However, many do not know that Ulysses S. Grant was the only U.S. president to die of cancer. He was a popular general who enjoyed smoking cigars. He had begun this chronic habit at an early age, and once admitted to smoking as many as 12 cigars in one day.
This bad habit finally took its toll when Grant was diagnosed with a carcinoma of the right tonsillar pillar in early June 1884. The cancer was at the base of the tongue and was described as a malignant squamous epithelioma, which was a scaly, invasive, metastasizing growth. At the onset of his cancer, surgical and technological movements were not advanced enough to effectively control the carcinoma. Only meager topical applications of cocaine hydrochlorate solution or iodoform powder could be used to help suppress the pain.
Despite devoted care from his personal physician John H. Douglas, who tried desperately to keep Grant alive to finish his memoirs, he suffered a slow and painful illness until his death in 1885. Today, Grant's carcinoma could be treated in several fashions with the inventions of the aspiration pump, radiotherapy, tracheotomy, and surgery.

U.S. President and anti-Semite: "I have long since believed that in spite of all the vigilance that can be infused into post commanders, the special regulations of the Treasury Department have been violated, and that mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders. So well satisfied have I been of this that I instructed the commanding officers at Columbus to refuse all permits to Jews to come South, and I have frequently had them expelled from the department, but they come in with their carpet-sacks in spite of all that can be done to prevent it. The Jews seem to be a privileged class that can travel anywhere. They will land at any woodyard on the river and make their way through the country. If not permitted to buy cotton themselves, they will act as agents for someone else, who will be at military post with a Treasury permit to receive cotton and pay for it in Treasury notes which the Jew will buy up at an agreed rate, paying gold." Letter to C. P. Wolcott, Assistant Secretary of War, Washington, December 17, 1862.

Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant
Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio in 1822 this future President of the United States became Ulysses S. Grant when a clerk at West Point wrote down his name wrong. Rather than complain he lived with it. He was undistinguished as a cadet, and excelled only in horsemanship. He hoped for a posting to the cavalry, but when he graduated 21st in his 1843 class of 39 he was assigned to the 4th Infantry Regiment as there were no vacancies in the cavalry. At the conclusion of the war he served for a time in Mexico and was then posted to the West coast. He resigned from the service in 1854 amid rumors of heavy drinking and warnings of possible disciplinary action by his post commander. He was largely unsuccessful in civilian life. He failed at farming and in the real estate business. The opening of Civil War hostilities found him working as a clerk in the family leather goods store, run by his two brothers in Galena, Illinois. He began his second military career organizing and mustering in recruits. Restored to command following the fall of Corinth he was thwarted in his first attempt to seize Vicksburg when his supply base at Holly Spring was destroyed by Confederate cavalry. Over the next few months he made several attempts to approach Vicksburg, but was unsuccessful until he shifted his army to the south of the city. In a series of brilliant marches and victories he drove the Confederates into their defensive fortifications and began an ultimately successful siege of the city. With the capitulation of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 he was placed in command of all of the Federal armies in the West. He raised the siege of Chattanooga and sent Sherman to relieve Knoxville.

Grant's great-great-grandson, Ulysses Grant Dietz, representing Grant's descendants, emphasized the importance of teaching the current generation about the Civil War and about his great-great-grandfather's accomplishments. He also wished the renovated National Memorial would maintain its present dignified condition for the future generation in remembrance of General Grant. Popularly known as Grant's Tomb, the memorial is one of the largest mausoleums in the world, rising to an imposing 150 feet from the bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Its construction was a mammoth undertaking for the time: hundreds of men worked on the structure between 1892 and 1897, using over 8,000 tons of Vermont granite. Modeled after some of the most famous monuments ever built, Grant's Tomb incorporated elements from the tomb of King Mausolus at Halicarnassus, the tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, Napoleon's tomb in Dome de Invalides, and Garfield Memorial in Cleveland, Ohio. New York architect John Duncan was selected by a panel of judges to design Grant's tomb. Gen. Grant passed away on July 23, 1885 and his funeral was held on August 8, 1885.
