Verbs
Helping verbs or auxiliary verbs such as will, shall, may, might, can, could, must, ought to, should, would, used to, need are used in conjunction with main verbs to express shades of time and mood. The combination of helping verbs with main verbs creates what are called verb phrases or verb strings . In the following sentence, "will have been" are helping or auxiliary verbs and "studying" is the main verb; the whole verb string is underlined:
  • As of next August, I will have been studying chemistry for ten years.
Students should remember that adverbs and contracted forms are not, technically, part of the verb. In the sentence, "He has already started." the adverb already modifies the verb, but it is not really part of the verb. The same is true of the 'nt in "He hasn't started yet" (the adverb not , represented by the contracted n't , is not part of the verb, has started Shall, will and forms of have, do and be combine with main verbs to indicate time and voice. Thou, Thee, and Archaic Grammar
by A. Davies, R. Lipton, D. Richoux et al. "Thou", "thee", "thine" and "thy" are pronouns that have dropped out of the main dialects of Modern English. During the period of Early Modern English (~1470-1700), they formed the Second Person Singular of the language, and were standardized by the time of the King James Bible as shown below. Subjective Objective Possessive Present Tense
Verb Ending 1st Pers. Sing. I me my/mine[1] none 2nd Pers. Sing. thou thee thy/thine[1] -est 3rd Pers. Sing. he/she/it him/her/it his/her/its -eth 1st Pers. Plural we us our none 2nd Pers. Plural ye/you[2] you your none 3rd Pers. Plural they them their none [1]: "Mine" and "thine" were used before "h" and vowels, much as "an" was. [2]: "You" had replaced "ye" for most plural uses by 1600. Here are the conjugations from that era of two common irregular verbs: to be - Present tense to have - Present tense I am I have thou art thou hast he/she/it is he/she/it hath we are we have ye are ye have they are they have You may have been told that "thou" and "thee" were for familiar use, and "you" and "ye" were formal. This was not true originally, but it was true for about two centuries, roughly 1450-1650, including Shakespeare's time. The previously plural "you" was used in the singular to signify politeness and respect, which left "thou" and "thee" for all the other singular uses, ranging from endearing intimacy to bitter rudeness. Eventually, the politer "you" drove out nearly all uses of "thee" and "thou"; they survived mostly in poetry and religion.

English grammar is the study of grammar in the English language . Grammars of English can be either prescriptive or descriptive . Prescription sets rules for language, while description simply describes the way a language is spoken; this article attempts to be primarily descriptive. It is important to understand that experts disagree about many parts of English grammar: what follows is just one analysis among many. The grammar of English is in some ways relatively simple, and in others quite complex. For example, word order is relatively fixed because English is an analytic language and this aspect of grammar is therefore relatively simple. The verbal system , on the other hand, is quite large and complex, like those of many other Indo-European languages.

    Task.
The verb to task (meaning "to impose a task on") has been around a long time: the Oxford English Dictionary records the first example in 1530. But geez, it's ugly, innit? Garner dismisses it as a "vogue word" in A Dictionary of Modern American Usage ; I object because it's a thoughtless in business writing. [Entry added 12 Jan. 2005.]
    Taste.
As in "There's no accounting for" ( de gustibus non est disputandum rules go only so far; after that, all you've got to guide you are preferences. Me, personally, myself, I'd sooner go to my grave than use disconnect as a noun ("There's a big disconnect between what he says and what he does"): I feel so dirty when I have to say it. The word lifestyle makes my teeth itch, and I'd rather gnaw my own leg off than say something like " any way, shape, or form ." (Ditto phrases like "Me, personally, myself.") But they're not right or wrong , and certainly not the sort of thing that a grammar guide can settle definitively: there's no authoritative answer. I find them ugly as sin, but your mileage may vary. They're a matter of taste.

    Latinate versus Germanic Diction.
English is an unusual language in that it derives from two main language families, Latinate and Germanic. Its origins are Germanic; in the fourth or fifth century, Old English or Anglo-Saxon was a Germanic dialect, a relative of modern German. (You wouldn't be able to read a word of it without a class in Old English. Here's the first sentence of the most famous Old English poem, Beowulf English . I warned you.) There was a later influx of Scandinavian words when the Vikings arrived, but the Scandinavian languages are also Germanic, so English remained fundamentally Germanic. (You can see how English is related to other Germanic languages, and other Indo-European languages generally, in an Indo-European Language Family Tree I've prepared.) two , one based on the Germanic original long used by the peasantry, another based on the French import that had currency in the court. (Later still, a great many words entered the language directly from Latin without stopping along the way at French, and sometimes we have near synonyms from all three origins: kingly [from Germanic royal [from Latin by way of French roy ], and
