Language and literacy Just as numeracy is the ability to use numbers, literacy is the ability to use letters.
A literate person is a lettered person.
An illiterate person is a person without letters.
Illiterate can mean unable to read and write, or it can mean uneducated
Literate can mean able to read and write, or it can mean educated
The association of education with reading and writing is as old as civilisation. Gordon Childe, in What Happened in History says that writing was the origin of civilisation. History is that part of human past which was recorded in writing.
Literacy can mean the ability to read and write, or the possession of other skills . You can say, for example, that someone is computer literate.
Here is one attempt to list types of literacy:
  • Linguistic literacy - being able to understand, speak, write and read a language, correctly following its rules of grammar , sentence construction etc.

INTRO: Today VOA Wordmasters Rosanne Skirble and Avi Arditti introduce us to Grammar Lady. RS: Mary Bruder is a woman on a mission. She calls herself Grammar Lady. Her goal: to help bring grammar back into people's lives. AA: Mary Bruder has taught English and English as a Foreign Language. She says it bothers her that many schools in the United States and Canada no longer teach the rules of grammar. RS: So now there's a place where people who don't know their participles from their apostrophes can turn. They can call Grammar Lady on the telephone hotline she operates from her home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. AA: Mary Bruder also writes a column for the local newspaper. And, she's on the Internet: she runs grammarlady.com, a Web site that gets 300-thousand visits a month. RS: For speakers of English-as-a-foreign- language, she says, one of the most common grammatical mistakes is incorrect usage of irregular past tense verbs. TAPE CUT ONE: GRAMMAR LADY "As the language has changed over the years, most of the verbs in English have a regular pattern. For example, with the verb `live,' you say, `I live in Pittsburgh now.' `I lived in Pittsburgh last year.' And, `I have lived in Pittsburgh for twenty years.' That's the regular pattern and most of the verbs in English have changed over to that. But there are some quite popular verbs like `go,' that didn't change. And so we have three forms of that verb: Go, `I go to church every week.' `I went to church last week.' And, `I have gone to church every week. So you have `go, went and gone.'

In Parts I and II , we learned about Spanish subjunctive conjugations. In Part III, we'll take a look at using the Spanish subjunctive with verbs and impersonal expressions. In Part IV , we'll examine the subjunctive with conjunctions and relative pronouns, and in Part V , we'll look at the subjunctive in adjective clauses. The subjunctive is a verb mood, not a tense. Mood refers to the attitude of the speaker toward the action/condition of the verb - how likely/factual the statement is. The subjunctive mood is subjective ; it expresses emotional, potential, and hypothetical attitudes about what is being expressed - things like will/wanting, emotion, doubt, possibility, necessity, judgment. The "normal" verb mood is called the indicative and is used for factual or definite statements about reality. The Spanish subjunctive is often found in dependent clauses introduced by que (that). The subjects of the dependent and main clauses are usually

Not all verbs expressing motion in Russian fall into the small group of verbs which is referred to as the Verbs of Motion . The most frequently used verbs of motion are shown in the table below:
    UNPREFIXED VERBS OF MOTION
Multidirectional Verbs Unidirectional Verbs Meaning Intransitive Verbs to go on foot to go by vehicle to fly to swim, to sail, to float to run
(this verb is used only to describe the motion of people or animals) Transitive Verbs Íîñèòü + Accusative íåñòè + Accusative to carry on foot âîäèòü + Accusative âåñòè + Accusative to lead, to take on foot
(both the subject and direct object of this verb must refer only to living beings) Âîçèòü + Accusative âåçòè + Accusative to carry by vehicle
(this verb can be used to describe 1) an action when a person is driving another one; 2) an action when a person is walking and pushing or pulling the vehicle; 3) a motion of an animal which can be ridden)
The Russian verbs of motion are unusual, since they come in pairs: there are two verbs for each type of motion, a multidirectional and a unidirectional form. All unprefixed verbs of motion are imperfective.

    Controlling Shifts in Verb Tense
Writing often involves telling stories. Sometimes we narrate a story as our main purpose in writing; sometimes we include brief anecdotes or hypothetical scenarios as illustrations or reference points in an essay. Even an essay that does not explicitly tell a story involves implied time frames for the actions discussed and states described. Changes in verb tense help readers understand the temporal relationships among various narrated events. But unnecessary or inconsistent shifts in tense can cause confusion. Generally, writers maintain one tense for the main discourse and indicate changes in time frame by changing tense relative to that primary tense, which is usually either simple past or simple present. Even apparently non-narrative writing should employ verb tenses consistently and clearly. General guideline: Do not shift from one tense to another if the time frame for each action or state is the same.

For future tense, add will plus your verb:
I will tomorrow. For present perfect, add have plus the past participle: For past perfect, add had plus the past participle: For future perfect, add will have plus the past participle: Example: RUN - Imagine that you are talking with a friend about field day races. Present: I run today.
