The culture and expectations of schools that are not primarily supported by public taxes play a large role in curricula and instructional practices. For this issue, we invite teachers in private, parochial, and independent schools to write. What activities and strategies have you found successful with students in your program or school? How does the school context make a difference in what and how you teach? What theories of teaching and learning and what research do you call on to select materials and design lessons that are responsive to the context and effectives for the students? How do you capitalize on the opportunities and overcome the limitations of teaching in a private, parochial, or independent school? How do you employ technology? How do you address cultural and linguistic diversity? Top Home Poetry Postmark deadline for submissions: January 15, 2006

Two English people are talking about the same couple.
  • He sounded American to me, but she doesn't seem to have any accent at all.
What's going on here? Who has the accent? What I know about my language and how to use it is called my idiolect . It almost certainly varies in minor ways from the idiolects of all other speakers. But what is an idiolect? That is, what kinds of things do I know? In one sense, this whole book is an answer to that question, but we need to have a first cut at the answer here to help us get started.
  • I know words. I have a vocabulary, a set of words which I know how to pronounce and use appropriately. For example, I know how to say the word apple , and I know that it refers to a particular type of fruit.

The specific articles can be further divided into two classes: (1) grammatical rules and explanations, matters rather of precedent than of taste; and (2) more subjective suggestions for making your writing clearer , more forceful, and more graceful . The specific articles are intended for quick reference, such as when you have to find out whether

ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND USAGE
Basic / Not Boring Grammar and Usage for Middle Grades: Inventive Exercises to Sharpen Skills and Raise Achievement. Series concept and development by Imogene Forte and Marjorie Frank. Exercises by Joy MacKenzie. Incentive Publications, ©1997. Books in this series present a carefully researched skill sequence with exercises based on age-appropriate, high-interest themes developed by experienced teachers to make learning basic skills interesting and achievable. The exercises in this book can be used to introduce new skills, review previously taught material, assess skills and content, and encourage the use of higher order thinking skills. The theme in this book is the beach. Students will discover commas lost in the surf, meet subjects and verbs more disagreeable than crabs, and find clauses that are caught in lobster claws. As they encounter various ocean and beach related exercises, students will learn to find subjects and predicates; identify simple, complex and compound sentences; identify parts of speech; identify, form and use possessive nouns; identify and use verb tenses; understand and use subject-verb agreement; identify and correct dangling modifiers; identify and use independent and subordinate clauses; use proper punctuation and capitalization; and create, explain, and properly punctuate common contractions. 64 pages, including answers. Limited reproduction rights for classroom use. For grades 6-8. IP-4002. $8.06-D

    Overview
Traditionally, a style guide (often called a style manual or stylebook ) dictates what form of language should be used. These style guides are principally used by academia and publishers. In such works, style can have two meanings:
    • Publication conventions for markup style, such as whether book and movie titles should be written in italics; expression of dates and numbers; how references should be cited. Literary considerations of prose style, such as best usage, common errors in grammar, punctuation and spelling; and suggestions for precision, fairness and the most forceful expression of ideas.
Some modern style guides are designed for use by the general public. These tend to focus on language over presentation. Style guides don’t directly address writers’ individual style, or “voice,” although writers sometimes say style guides are too restrictive.
