If you don't know what a newsgroup is, or you want to know how to "join" one, or what to do when you've "joined" it – there's an official (well, as official as anything gets with newsgroups) list of documents for you to browse through. It's rather complex and much of it is rather out of date, though. For a simpler introduction to newsgroups you could try the online service provided by Google Groups , with its own FAQ . But remember that although Google Groups is good for dipping into newsgroups, it's not ideal for prolonged use. Most newsgroup participants use an off-line newsreader such as Microsoft Outlook Express or Forte Agent

If you'd prefer the whole thing in one large file, use http://www.english.upenn.edu/~jlynch/grammar.html . Please keep me informed of any problems, particularly links gone bad. I'm experimenting with a new search engine . It's very rudimentary, but please let me know if it's useful. You will find certain words or phrases criticized here listed in dictionaries. Note carefully labels like dial. (dialectical), nonstandard , and obsolete before assuming that the dictionary is endorsing them. The primary job of a dictionary is to track how people actually use language. Dictionaries differ among themselves on how much guidance to usage they provide; but the goal of a usage guide like this is substantially different: to protect you against patterns which are regarded by substantial numbers of well-educated people as nonstandard. Why do you discuss mainly American usage?

    Grammar
Grammar is the study of the rules which govern the use of a language. That set of rules is also called the language's grammar , and each language has its own, distinct grammar. An expert in that field of study is called a grammarian. Grammar falls within a larger set of studies which is called linguistics. The subfields of grammar are phonology, morphology and syntax. Speakers of a language follow that language's grammar as a common convention that makes the language coherent. Violation of the grammar makes one's speech difficult to understand. Because of its importance in facilitating communication, grammar is a primary focus in education from a young age through advanced learning. Most languages' grammars developed naturally over time through usage, as early languages lacked formal, written rules. Each speaker was required to develop an innate sense of grammar by observing usage. Formal grammars are codifications of the usages that were developed by observation. As the rules became established and developed the concept of grammatical correctness arose. This can often create a gulf between contemporary usage and the form accepted as correct. Planned languages are more common in the modern day, whether they have been designed to aid human communication (Esperanto), created as part of a work of Fiction, (Klingon language and Elvish language). Each of these artificial languages has its own grammar.

Appendix D: Common Grammar, Usage, and Spelling Problems
This part of the appendix covers mostly punctuation matters:
    Punctuation: Commas
Punctuation is a good example of this effort to use clearly defined rules in technical writing. In journalistic punctuation style, you punctuate according to what you feel are the needs for clarity. But this is likely to be viewed differently by different people. Therefore, punctuation style in technical writing is based on the structure of the sentence. Use a comma after all introductory elements. Any element, regardless of the length, coming before the main clause should be punctuated with a comma. (The main clause is that core part of a sentence that makes it a complete sentence; that is, it expresses a complete thought.) Here are some examples: When an atom acquires enough energy to leave its orbit , the atom is positively charged. As for the energy required to produce plastic automobile parts , the auto makers view the additional cost as justified by the savings in petroleum by a lighter car during its lifetime. Because the high-pressure turbopumps rotate at speeds of 30,000 rpm

On a larger scale, the guides listed here perform the same function as the present bibliography, that is, they list and discuss the dictionaries, handbooks, indexes, and bibliographies useful to researchers in English literature. All of these volumes are well annotated and offer evaluative commentary. A good piece of advice: in starting a research topic, do not narrow your focus too early, for doing so may, on the one hand, engage you in a frustrating, needle-in-a-haystack search for something that may not exist or be difficult to identify; on the other hand, insisting too early on exactly what you want to focus upon may mean that you will overlook sources which will contain useful material and which could potentially enrich your overall sense of your topic with perspectives you might not have even considered. Try to pick up as many clues as you can about the several dimensions, contexts, and backgrounds of your topic, and keep your options open initially.

The best way to improve one's writing skills is to write, receive feedback from an instructor, revise based on the feedback, and then repeat the whole process as often as possible. Unfortunately, this puts an enormous load on the classroom teacher, who is faced with reading and providing feedback for perhaps 30 essays or more every time a topic is assigned. As a result, teachers are not able to give writing assignments as often as they would wish. With this in mind, researchers have sought to develop applications that automate essay scoring and evaluation. Work in automated essay scoring began in the early 1960s and has been extremely productive (Page 1966; Burstein et al. 1998; Foltz, Kintsch, and Landauer 1998; Larkey 1998; Rudner 2002; Elliott 2003). Detailed descriptions of most of these systems appear in Shermis and Burstein (2003). Pioneering work in the related area of automated feedback was initiated in the 1980s with the Writer's Workbench (MacDonald et al. 1982).

    General Research Advice
    • A good place to start is often by using general reference sources, such as encyclopedias. (For instance, try the World Book 2002 in print, the Grolier Encyclopedia on CD-ROM, or use Encyclopedia Britannica through Virtual Library as below, or other online encyclopedias, in the ENCYCLOPEDIAS section.)
    • When using the Internet, be sure to use worthwhile sites. Click here for a guide on How To Search the Web , and see the sections GENERAL REFERENCE SITES and also SEARCH ENGINES AND OTHER REFERENCE TOOLS.
    • If you find a useful site during your research that you would like to share with others, tell the librarian, and it can be added to the appropriate lists here.
    • Researching a topic on the Net is not easy; if you need help, the library staff is here to assist you.
    • Remember that different search engines and even CD-ROMS are organized differently and the search strategies that you need may vary. Read their instructions and use their Help menus. Often it is better to use a category or subject menu on a search engine than to use a keyword search.
