http://www.jpschoemer.com/MostCommonErrors.html
The most common grammar, usage, and style errors in print today. Below are errors that probably 95 percent of all people make every single day. The good news is that, once you know what to look for, these errors are easy to avoid and/or fix in your daily writing. Description Wrong Right Comment Incorrectly hyphenating two words that jointly modify another word one year period; the lady is high-class; aptly-named dog one-year period; the lady is high class; aptly named dog never after an -ly adverb. Hyphenating prefixes semi-colon; pre-approved; re-phrase; co-worker; selfmotivated semicolon; preapproved; rephrase; coworker; self-motivated always hyphenated when used as a prefix. Using inch/foot marks and quotes/apostrophes interchangeably 10” x 2’; "Don't!" 10" x 2'; “Don’t!” Computers are the culprit here, but you can generally use the correct character if you can figure out the command and/or character map. Most software (e.g., QuarkXpress, Word, Illustrator) lets you default to one or the other, but doesn’t know when to use which. A few programs (e.g., WordPerfect, as one of its few redeeming qualities) are smart enough to automatically insert the proper form. Using two spaces after periods and colons ...the door. The result: trouble. ...the door. The result: trouble.

Common Grammar, Usage, and Spelling Problems
This part of the appendix covers mostly punctuation matters:
Punctuation: Commas
Punctuation is a good example of this effort to use clearly defined rules in technical writing. In journalistic punctuation style, you punctuate according to what you feel are the needs for clarity. But this is likely to be viewed differently by different people. Therefore, punctuation style in technical writing is based on the structure of the sentence. Use a comma after all introductory elements. Any element, regardless of the length, coming before the main clause should be punctuated with a comma. (The main clause is that core part of a sentence that makes it a complete sentence; that is, it expresses a complete thought.) Here are some examples: When an atom acquires enough energy to leave its orbit , the atom is positively charged. As for the energy required to produce plastic automobile parts , the auto makers view the additional cost as justified by the savings in petroleum by a lighter car during its lifetime.
