Our job as teachers is to help our students discover this knowledge.
Knowing about grammar is important for numerous reasons. It's the language that lets us talk about language. It names the type of words and word groups that comprise sentences in English and other languages. It helps with understanding what makes sentences and paragraphs clear, interesting, and precise. It can be part of literature discussions as we examine the sentences in poetry and stories. It lets us understand that all languages and all dialects follow grammatical patterns.
Research shows that learning grammar is best done in the context of reading, writing, and speaking.

Francis J. Noonan III

Easton Area School District (Easton, PA, USA) This article explains how to teach ESL/EFL students to notice grammar. There is also a suggested lesson plan.
Introduction
Many teachers are confused on how to teach grammar. The form-focused instruction of the audio-lingual method produced students that knew a lot about a language but could not apply what they knew to spontaneous speech. Conversely, the lack of grammar instruction in the Communicative Approach has often produced students who communicate well but lack grammatical competency. Is it possible to teach grammar in a way that will help students develop grammatical competency, even in spontaneous speech? This article explores a possible answer to this dilemma, the theory of noticing, and its application to the classroom.
Why Noticing?
The theoretical basis for noticing centers around the relationship between explicit and implicit knowledge. Explicit knowledge is conscious knowledge of grammar rules learned through formal classroom instruction. For example, Li knows every rule about subject-verb agreement but makes frequent mistakes in natural speech. This knowledge is only available to him when he has time to think about the rules and then apply them (i.e. a grammar exercise or a writing assignment). In contrast, implicit knowledge is unconscious, internalized knowledge of a language that is available for spontaneous speech. For example, Jim speaks English with near perfect use of the basic rules of subject-verb agreement. This is despite the fact that he may have no idea what subject-verb agreement is or what the rules are.

    Abstract
This article discusses the role of grammar in educating Secondary English Teachers and Elementary Education Teachers with an English Concentration. The term "grammar" is difficult, with varied referents in varied contexts. Students learn to associate a different number with each of five common, but different, definitions of grammar (Hartwell 1985). They must link one such number to the term's every occurrence in their writing. Students learn grammatical labels to discuss writing and to read descriptions in dictionaries and usage books which employ these terms. Students are taught traditional labels but not with traditional definitions. Students learn to read sentence diagrams but not to draw nor teach them. They learn not to teach grammar separate from writing. The preferred texts for analysis are authentic, not canned, e.g., pupils' or students' writing, speeches, literary passages. Final results in terms of both student attitudes and accomplishments are mixed.

Method The research was carried out with a group of sixteen MFL student teachers on the one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) course at the Manchester Metropolitan University. This is a thirty-six-week course beginning in mid-September and finishing at the end of June. We collected data from the students via a questionnaire in the first week of the course, before they had taken part on any sessions or discussions about grammar and grammar teaching, and again towards the end of the PGCE course, in May. In June we also interviewed eight students for approximately half an hour each. The interviews were semi-structured and transcribed in full.
