Punctuation Top ten mistakes Comma splices Semicolons Colons ... Emoticons Punctuation helps readers break writing into logical units, making it easier to follow. Punctuation includes all the conventional signs used to separate words: spaces, first-line indentation of paragraphs, blank lines, uppercase letters, and various marks or stops (commas, periods, semicolons, and so on). Punctuation is conventional rather than scientific, and has evolved over time. The earliest written languages, in fact, had no punctuation at all, writers just RANWORDSTOGETHERFORASLONGASTHEYCAREDTOWRITE (every so often a bold pioneer would introduce a reader-friendly innovation like LowerCaseLetters or spaces between words). In the modern world punctuation is an important thing to get right in formal writing. Readers of formal writing interpret punctuation mistakes as a sign of poor education or carelessness, and in either case tend to discount the work's validity. Here Nuts and Bolts presents a brief treatment of the use and abuse of the major punctuation marks.

English Placement / Grammar Diagnostic English 101 – Fundamentals of Writing Course description: English 101 is a basic writing course designed to assist students in acquiring the composing skills necessary for success in English 120. Students will be engaged in preparing essays that respond to written texts, thereby combining reading skills with writing strategies. In addition, English 101 provides a systematic review of grammar, mechanics, and other college-writing conventions. One major objective of English 101 is for students to be able to construct essays that review and evaluate the ideas and issues found in the writing of others. A Basic Competency Examination is administered to all sections of English 101, which students must pass before being admitted into English 120. A departmental Grammar/Mechanics test is also given during the final week of the semester. Placement in English 101 is re-evaluated during the first two weeks of instruction, and students may be reassigned if appropriate. Credits awarded for this course are in addition to the 120-credit minimum degree requirement . Classes are intentionally kept small (typically 15 students a section) to ensure maximum benefit. Typical entering students: In general, students in this course are those who need or want additional preparation for college writing. They desire a review of grammar, mechanics, and punctuation rules and would like more practice on essay organization. These students probably have not written many essays in their last two years of high school.
