For your contribution, you get lifetime access to the complete resources of WritingTips.com, the menu of which you can view below. Of that $2.50, approximately $1 goes to Amazon.com, for its part in collecting the fee. The remaining portion goes to help defray the costs of maintaining the service. A $2.50 contribution, in exchange for lifetime access to the material here, has got to be some kind of record for good value. But if you're in a position to contribute more (say, $5, $10 or $25), that would of course be most welcome and appreciated! (The Amazon system will let you enter whatever amount you choose.)

    • Taking A-level English Language? The english biz grammar guide has been written just for you.
Grammar is one of seven so-called language frameworks that your exam board expects you to use, as appropriate, when you analyse and discuss the style of the many texts you will meet on your course - as well as those you write yourself. You simply cannot ignore grammar if you are hoping for a high grade.
Examiners say that many students avoid discussing grammar. Avoiding grammar loses marks. A grammatical analysis reveals subtle aspects of texts and subtlety gains marks. A basic grasp of grammar is all that is necessary.
      So... what is grammar?
      • Grammar is a set of rule-like conventions . You follow these subconsciously whenever you use language.
      • The most important aspect of grammar concerns the choices of word order you are allowed to use when you write or speak. You want to point out someone stood on your foot...? It is grammar that tells you to put their name at the beginning of your sentence; and to put it just before the verb that says what they did. You want to say whose foot was stamped on...? It is grammar that tells you to put your own name

This appendix covers only those grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling problems that give people the biggest headaches. If you can't find answers to what you are looking for here, consult a standard reference handbook such as one of the following (try to get an edition published after 1990):

Technical-writing professionals try to simplify grammar rules as much as possible, without hurting the language or putting themselves in straitjackets. Typically, they work in teams and frequently move in and out of projectsso that the same document may be worked on by different writers and editors during the space of just a few years. That's why any guidelines based on interpretation or personal style or judgment must be avoided. Interested in courses related to this page or a printed version? See the

Next The Historical Grammar of the Old English Language 1. The history of Old English and its development. 2. The Old English Phonetics. 3. The Old English Substantive. 4. The Old English Adjective. ... Appendix I: Texts. In 409 AD the last Roman legion left British shores, and in fifty years the Islands became a victim of invaders. Germanic tribes from Southern Scandinavia and Northern Germany, pushed from their densely populated homelands, looked for a new land to settle. At that time the British Isles were inhabited by the Celts and remaining Roman colonists, who failed to organize any resistance against Germanic intruders, and so had to let them settle here. This is how the Old English language was born. Celtic tribes crossed the Channel and starting to settle in Britain already in the 7th century BC. The very word "Britain" seems to be the name given by the pre-Celtic inhabitants of the island, accepted by first Indo-Europeans. The Celts quickly spread over the island, and only in the north still existed non-Indo-European peoples which are sometimes called "Picts" (the name given by Romans). Picts lived in Scotland and on Shetland Islands and represented the most ancient population of the Isles, the origin of which is unknown. Picts do not seem to leave any features of their language to Indo-European population of Britain - the famous Irish and Welsh initial mutations of consonants can be the only sign of the substratum left by unknown nations of Britain.
