LearnPlus German Grammar Guide Index LearnPlus Guides German Guide Index Grammar may seem difficult, but it is a very effective tool if you are facing the challenge of learning a new language. The grammar of a language is simply a set of rules that explain how that language works. If you learn these rules, you can understand the mechanisms of the language and master it.
These easy definitions and examples cover most common terms and will be of use to anyone who is not familiar with words like 'adjective' or 'verb'. They will especially help you understand the explanations used in the LearnPlus German courses Click on one of the titles below to learn more: NB: These notes include several examples in German. Translations into English are given for convenience. Please do not focus on the translations: translations are often misleading because the rule of one language does not correspond to an identical rule of the other.

Why these Combinators?
Have you always been intrigued by Attribute Grammars because they allow you to:
  • write language processors in a compositional way in which the different aspects of a language may be textually separated
but you do not like:
  • to write code for constructing and inspecting intermediate data structures the often verbose notation used by other systems to learn a new language for describing semantic functions the often limited expressibility of these languages the sheer size of existing systems the absence of any higher-order facilities
then why not use my simple attribute grammar system? The UU_AG system is a very simple program that reads a set of files containing an attribute grammar, in which semantic functions are described through Haskell expressions. Out of this description catamorphisms and data type definitions are generated. I hope this software is useful to you. If you have any comments do not hesitate to contact me.

© 2003-5 Steve Campsall analysing a text grammatically
  • Grammar is not just a set of rules, it is also a linguistic system that enables linguists ( including you! ) to describe aspects of a text's style
Analysing a text at the level of its grammar can reveal some of its important stylistic qualities.
    • This is because the choices writers and speakers make regarding the grammar of their sentences can have an impact on how their texts suit different contexts audiences and purposes These are the three key areas of concern when creating - and analysing - a text for elements of its style
Making a start with grammatical analysis... THE PHRASE Sentences can be broken down into smaller units. A sensible unit to look for would be the smallest that functions to add, shape or create the meaning of the sentence. From this viewpoint, the most important of all grammatical units is, an easy one to spot quite easily. It is called the phrase
    • Most people are sensitive to the existence of these smaller sentence units and, with practice, you should be able to identify them. Knowing even a little about phrases will prove very useful indeed to your coursework and exams. And that really does mean higher marks!
