Grammar Handbook: Conjunctions Conjunctions are grammatical connectors that link words, phrases or clauses. A conjunction can indicate the relationship between the elements that it connects in the sentence. Without these, we would not see the relationship. There are three types of conjunctions: coordinating correlative , and subordinating Coordinating Conjunctions
A coordinating conjunction connects words, phrases, and clauses that have equal or the same grammatical functions, The coordinating conjunctions include and, but, or, yet, nor, for, and so. Examples:
: Connecting nouns: I will buy a coat and a hat.
: Connecting verbs: I did not call nor write my mother.
: Connecting adjectives: The boy was nice but weird.
: Connecting dependent clauses: If the students show and the teacher is prepared, class will be productive.
: Connecting independent clauses: Ten thousand students applied to the college, but only six thousand were admitted.

Con junctions What are the differences in use between because as and since , and though although and even though because, as and since
though, although and even though
because, as and since Because as and since are used to answer the question: ‘Why?’. They join two clauses in the same sentence: Joe resigned because he wanted to spend more time with his family. AND because as and since show the relationship between the ideas in two clauses: A: Why did you resign from such a well-paid job, Joe? B: Because I wanted to spend more time with my family. Because is more common than as and since when the ‘reason’ is the most important thing. The because -clause usually comes after the main clause: I went to Cyprus for a holiday last October because I knew it would be warm and sunny every day I was there.

Lesson 16: Classification Of Conjunctions
"A conjunction is a word that joins single words or groups of words. Conjunction means connection." Marie has a large salmon laid out on her cutting board. She is using a knife to cut it into filets for smoking. As she prepares and applies the marinade she classifies conjunctions as follows: co-ordinate conjunctions, correlative conjunctions, subordinate conjunctions, independent conjunctions, phrasal conjunctions, and conjunctives. By the time the salmon filets have finished smoking, she has provided clear definitions and examples of all of the above. Featured Music: Tchaikovsky - Valse - Scherzo Op. 7

Grammar Review
For most of us, the word "grammar" evokes painful memories of tedious exercises done many years ago while we were sitting on a hard seat and eagerly awaiting the bell. The subject matter is forgotten, and all we remember is the pain. Unfortunately, grammar is a foundation for further learning. Without it we would have no terms in which to describe and discuss language, and that's why this section has been included. I shall try to cover the topic as quickly and painlessly as possible while nonetheless conveying an explanation of all the grammatical terms used elsewhere in this guide. We'll briefly cover only the topics you need right now. Consequently, I have left out a great deal of information that you may wish to review in your pursuit of better writing skills. For that information, you may refer to Web pages posted by some genuine English teachers:
  • http://www.edufind.com/english/grammar/
In the way of a warning, real grammarians may have fits over some of the things I've said below. That's because I've ruthlessly simplified a topic that properly should consume many megabytes of disk storage, and could take years to master. To begin, we review the main parts of speech:
