ABOUT ME
I first came to teaching in 2001 when I started substituting in the Berkeley and Jefferson County school systems. Last year, I taught English 8 at Musselman Middle School in nearby Bunker Hill, W.Va., near Inwood. When the opportunity to teach high school here in Jefferson County became available, I jumped at the chance and I have never looked back.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked for defense industry publications in Washington, D.C. as a reporter-editor. Previously, I had written for The Shepherdstown Chronicle, The Shepherd (College) Picket, The Shepherdstown Good Newspaper, where I remain a contributor, and had several articles published in the Winchester Star.

parts of this page: general description textbooks grading expanded resources downloads last revised September 23, 2003
General Course Description:
This is the first part of a yearlong course in Intermediate Chinese. The dialect taught is Mandarin and the course is designed for students who have had little prior exposure to Chinese language. All students who have not taken CHN3 at UC Davis are required to take the placement evaluation at the beginning of the term. The emphasis in this class is on building up vocabulary and sentence patterns. Students will expand their ability to carry out simple conversations in Chinese on a limited range of topics. Reading and writing (using traditional or complex characters) will be developed in conjunction with speaking and listening skills. Students will be expected to speak, read, and write all new words that appear in vocabulary lists in the main textbook unless otherwise noted by the instructor. Media: Audio tapes are available in the Language Learning Center, Olson 53. Web-based listening practice may be accessed in Olson 18 and 18A. Students will prepare and perform role-plays in class, and are encouraged to use video. Video and web-based instruction will be used to supplement regular classroom instruction. Many supplemental materials to help you learn, as well as homework assignments, are available through the course web site. Students should familiarize themselves with the web site as soon as possible.
