The topic of German spelling reform Rechtschreibreform ) has been hotly debated in recent years. Even before the current rules, issued in 1996, went into effect for schools and government entities in all the German-speaking countries in August 1998, there had been court cases and official protests. Despite a generally negative attitude from most German-speakers, the German media in Austria, Germany and Switzerland almost uniformly adopted the reforms in August 1999. With rare exceptions ( FAZ in 2000 ), the reforms remain in effect today, with complete implementation scheduled for August 1, 2005.

Comparing English and German Rules Part 1 Quiz In most cases German and English capitalization rules are similar or identical. I have pointed out those similarities in Part 1 . But here is a closer look at the most important differences: 1. SUBSTANTIVE (Nouns) All German nouns are capitalized. This simple rule was made even more consistent by the new spelling reforms. Whereas under the old rules there were exceptions in many common noun phrases and some verbs ( radfahren recht haben heute abend ), the 1996 reforms now require the nouns in such expressions to be capitalized (and set apart): Rad fahren (to ride a bike)

Grammar Journals
Grammar Journals are a quick way to practice necessary punctuation and capitalization rules. They are an efficient way to see at almost a glance which of your students is having trouble with a particular skill and which is grasping skills immediately. In addition it gives the students practice using proofreader's marks. I use this activity during the first grading period with my sixth-grade class as a follow up to all the rules they learned in fifth-grade.
Directions:
  • I prepare a journal cover for each of my students by folding a 9" x 12" piece of construction paper in half and placing on it a computer generated label with each student's name.
  • On the first day of school I have each student take ten pieces of loose leaf paper and fold them in half, slipping the paper between the folded cover and stapling them.
  • Every morning before the students arrive, I write a sentence containing capitalization and punctuation mistakes on the chalkboard. I use the same rules during the entire week. The following week I add another rule to those reviewed last week.
  • When the students arrive, they are to copy the incorrect sentence into their journal, use proofreading marks to show needed corrections, then correctly write the sentence. They are to have these completed before the day's opening exercises.

Using capital letters gives words a sense of importance and that’s why some words are always capitalized, such as country names (United States of America) and international figures (the Pope). But all too often, we use capital letters to add an air of importance where it really isn’t called for. In each of the eight cases below, the three top style guides Associated Press Stylebook, Chicago Manual of Style , and Gregg Reference Manual ) agree that capital letters generally shouldn’t be used. Seven Outdated Rules of Grammar
No matter what your fifth-grade English teacher says, some grammar "rules" no longer apply. The style mavens of our day all agree that the ability to communicate clearly and concisely takes precedence over archaic grammar rules. Stop chewing your pencils and forget about these rules. Each rule is followed by a grammatically correct sentence. 1. Never split an infinitive. I want to carefully consider all of the options presented to me. Following this rule all of the time will make your prose unnecessarily academic and stuffy. When in doubt, don't split the infinitive. But if splitting the infinitive conveys your meaning more clearly and concisely, split away. 2. Active verbs are always better than passive verbs

Language Conventions Comma Usage Semicolon Usage Quotation Marks Apostrophe for Possession ... Capitalization Introduction to Comma Usage Used effectively, commas provide clarity to the reader by separating various parts of sentences. Most Frequently Used Comma Rules Comma Rule #1 Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, nor, so, and yet) joining independent clauses. A clause is defined as a group of words containing a subject and predicate. An independent clause is a clause that can stand alone. In other words, "independent clause" is another term for "simple sentence." Rule #1 states that when two or more simple sentences are joined by a coordinating conjunction, the conjunction must be preceded by a comma. What you have is a compound sentence. For example: The contestants had to complete the challenge in an hour, or they were disqualified. Comma Rule # 2 Use a comma after an introductory word or group of words. This comma indicates that the main part of the sentence is about to begin. For example: Slowly, she became aware of where she was.

    Escape From the Grammar Trap
by Jean Hollis Weber Too many editors focus on the details and don't pay enough attention to the bigger picture. Editors canand shouldadd even more value through substantive, technical, and usability editing. Copyediting is important, but the details are only part of what an editor can and should be reviewing. After all, a document can be correctly spelled and punctuated, grammatically correct, use only approved terminology, and follow the style guide perfectlyand still not serve the audience's needs. This article covers some reasons why editors focus on details and not the bigger picture; describes how much attention technical communicators should pay to formal rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage; and describes how we can distinguish between essential and nonessential rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage.
Why Do Editors Have Such a Narrow Focus?
Some reasons for an editorial focus on details have to do with editors themselves; other reasons arise from the perceptions and priorities of managers and writers.
