OUSD Urban Dreams Lesson Plans I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings ... Core Literature Home Teacher commentary and reflection I chose the essential question (How do people overcome adversity?) because of its accessibility and because it is rich with possibilities for exploration. No one gets through life without suffering some adversity and most high school students feel that they suffer more than their share. I felt that most students would love the autobiography, yet I was still concerned about their need to have a variety of ways to respond to it lest they become bored. Therefore, I chose activities that would require them to interact with one another and that would allow them to engage in their different learning styles. I. Overview, Essential Question

by Werner Liepolt, Barbars Szepesi, and Jack McGarvey Overview Evaluation AN EXPOSITORY WRITING LESSON PLAN FOR ELEMENTARY-SCHOOL STUDENTS Background This lesson plan was developed for a school where a large number of students in the fourth grade performed poorly on the writing portion of a new state exam. The writing portion of the exam tested expository writing skills. In the school's elementary writing program, however, the teachers had focused mainly on fiction story-writing skills, and they had not provided instruction in expository writing. Samples of the students' responses questions that asked for them to "explain" or "show" frequently started with the phrase, "Once upon a time." Working with a curriculum coordinator, the teachers worked to incorporate expository writing into the second, third, and fourth grades. Assessment One teacher decided to have each student produce a piece of expository writing based on observation and questioning of a docent at a local historical society. She asked each student to research and write about a specific historical artifact, working from a list provided by the historical society. Using the school's digital camera, she took a picture of each artifact and handed out printed pictures to the students. These pictures were later displayed alongside the final essays.

Below the fold are the first ten hits in Google (currently) for the phrase, "I wish I would have" grammar . We're number one, on the strength of a single post of Paul's. I think that our victory here is Google's loss. Why in the world would Explananda be the first hit? And why would it beat The Atlantic Monthly in any test of relevance? What Google programmer's decision about ranking algorithms led to that result? What's also puzzling is that the same search on Yahoo brings up nothing - or at least, I stopped looking after the 12th page of results. I think I can speak for all of us at Explananda when I say that we take ourselves very seriously. But why would Google take us seriously? Explananda: Grammar September 13, 2004. Grammar. ... This lesson plan brings the excitement of a poetry slam to the classroom. This lesson plan will involve students in defining, composing, practicing, performing and judging poetry. It will help them realize that poetry is a living art form not just words on a page. Once students are introduced to various poetry devices, techniques, and forms, they are exposed to the origin, rules, judging, performance skills, and scoring involved in a poetry slam competition. As writers progress through the four global stages of the writing process - prewriting, in which ideas are formulated; drafting, in which ideas are put on paper and structured; revising, in which idea structures are clarified and improved; and editing, in which expression is fine-tuned - they will inevitably find that their thinking is sharpened as well. At its best, this process is a recursive one because writers move back and forth among the stages, considering, reconsidering, and revising their work until they are satisfied.
"Why School Administrators Should Be Model Writers," Arthur E. Lehr: Phi Delta Kappan June 2001 pp. 762-64. Adler on Marking a book
Perhaps the foundation of the writing process is the essay. You have already written many essays in your life and you will be writing many essays in your life. The essay is made of paragraphs, so let's start there. You will need to take a look at chapter 21 in the white grammar book sitting next to your computer called Warriner's English Grammar and Composition Takes notes on what a paragraph is.
