Grain crops soak up favourable weather
Healthy grain crops predicted. (File photo) ABC The recent rain followed by dry weather have made excellent growing conditions for grain crops in Queensland and New South Wales. GrainCorp Limited predicts winter crops will shed between 10 and 11 tonnes of grain for 2005 to 2006. The June rain followed by the dry spell have provided excellent conditions for growing winter crops, and planting for spring and summer harvests. GrainCorp says it is too early to provide detailed forecasts for each region but it expects the situation to become clearer as crops develop in the two months to September. It says it will issue revised receival forecasts at the end of each month until the commencement of harvest in September.

Wild Oats Grain Market Advisory
A market is a process of price discovery. You want to know the most buyers will pay. Buyers want to know the least that will persuade farmers to put adequate supplies on the market.
In any market, including our grain markets, those with the most information will do better, over time. Maybe the lucky will hit it right now and then, and have something to boast about. But those who methodically accumulate information will always tend to do better, as they deserve. An easier, less expensive way to get real information
If I offered you an opportunity to drive 50 miles once a week to buy coffee and listen to two experts with different sources of true information about the market, you would be wise to take me up on this offer. It would cost you 100 miles of driving expenses [maybe $30], plus a buck for the coffee, and three hours of your time which is an important expense. But it could pay off.
I have a much better offer:
  • same two experts, with different sources of information about grain and oilseed markets

Grain Drying And Storage Of Damp Grain - Crop Production
Aeration Heated Air Grain Dryers Storage Moulds
Aeration
Aeration is the use of relatively low airflow rates to cool grain and eliminate temperature and moisture differences in the storage bin. Aeration may be used with field-dried grain or with grain that is harvested damp, then dried and cooled in a heated air dryer. In both cases, temperature and moisture content variations may exist in the grain, or the grain may be too warm to store safely. Variations in grain temperature are also caused by changes in the outside air temperature after the grain is stored. Warm air rising in the centre of the bin cools when it reaches the cold grain near the surface. This results in an increase in moisture content near the surface, which can lead to rapid spoilage. Crusting on the surface of stored grain is a common symptom of moisture migration. Significant migration can occur in cereal grains at moisture contents as low as 12 per cent, or as low as 8 per cent in oilseeds if they are placed into storage at high temperature and not cooled.

Fungus-Feeding Pests
Pests that feed on fungus in stored grain include the foreign grain beetle, psocids and grain mites. Adult foreign grain beetles are brown, and about 1/8 inch (2 mm) long. They resemble the rusty grain beetle, but can be distinguished from it by club-shaped antennae. Grain mites are whitish, soft-bodied and about 0.2 to 0.5 mm long. They are difficult to see with the naked eye. About eight kinds of mites are common in farm granaries and elevators. Psocids are soft-bodied insects, about 1 mm long, with long antennae relative to the body size.
