For Immediate Release 1) Statement issued by the Popular Committees in the Palestinian Refugee Camps - West Bank, 26 April 2002:
To Our Steadfast People,
To Our People Rooted in the Land of Palestine,
Jenin al-Qassam, the site of the massacre, heralds the voice of Palestinian sacrifice and dignity from among the stench of the war crimes committed in this steadfast and heroic camp. In each Palestinian town, village and refugee camp, this voice is carried by our determination to survive, to challenge the policy of genocide, to rise above the dust of destruction and to remain steadfast in pride. Despite the bloody crime and despite the silence of the world, there is no surrender. The people of the Jenin refugee camp have refused to receive the aid sent to them by the US government and its agency USAID.
The massacre was committed with US approval and weapons, which killed our people and fighters and destroyed our homes, are weapons made in the United States. The crime committed is large and extensive. Its traces cannot be erased by the aid and assistance which is now being provided in order to humiliate our people and to desecrate the blood of our martyrs. All our greetings and all our respect to the people of Jenin, who have returned this aid to its owners, partners in the crime.

COLOMBIA: Government broadens clampdown on NGOs. Action requested.
Christian Peacemaker Teams' Colombia project has continued its accompaniment
work in the Cienaga del Opon region despite having half its ideal number of
team members.
"We are trying to get people there, but complications in the visa
application process have slowed the entry of new team members," said Duane
Ediger, support person for the team.
Four CPTers were issued deportation orders which include an 18-month ban on entry in late August. Although the government gave verbal assurance on September 6 that those orders were overturned, the first document verifying the change in status was delivered on October 2.

NGOs Call on Trade Ministers to Reject Exclusive Mini-Ministerials and Green Room Meetings in the Run-Up to, and at, the 5th WTO Ministerial
The 14-16 November mini-ministerial in Australia
is a step in the wrong direction for the WTO
Civil society groups from around the world call upon the 145 WTO member states and their trade ministers to follow transparent and inclusive procedures and reject the use of 'unofficial' and exclusive mini-ministerials in the run-up to the WTO's Fifth Ministerial in Cancun and of Green Room meetings during Cancun. Participation in these mini-ministerials and Green Room meetings is by invitation only, and includes about twenty-five countries, yet they discuss critical WTO matters affecting all member states. The use of such exclusionary meetings to build consensus among the few which is then presented to the majority as a take-it-or-leave-it package, must be rejected by WTO member states as clearly undemocratic and in violation of the one-country-one-vote and consensus system of the WTO. These meetings are fundamentally flawed because:

She writes Findings and Recommendations With or without democratic elections the Haitian government will receive possibly six million dollars in U.S. financial backing, aimed towards the recruitment of U.S. citizens. With H.R. 611, as it currently stands, U.S. citizens may soon be placed into complicit working activities with the constitutionally illegal regime of Interim Prime Minister Gerald Latortue. The Latortue regime and its National Police force will be allowed unhindered, to continue their daily massacres of supporters of democracy, well documented by members of the Haiti Information Project and multiple human rights reports. The illegal detentions of thousands of political prisoners such as folksinger/pro-democracy activist Annette Auguste, Prime Minister Yvan Neptune, and Minister of the Interior Jocelerme Privert, many of whom have now been in jail for over a year will continue.

    Report, IRIN, 6 May 2005
BAGHDAD, 4 May 2005 (IRIN) - Persistent violence and the fear of being associated with the US-led Coalition have limited the scope and neutrality of humanitarian agencies in Iraq in spite of available funding for projects, according to aid workers.
The underlying problem for aid organisations is poor security, they say. Many NGOs have relocated to nearby countries and evacuated international staff following kidnappings and bombings, targeting them.
In some cases, private contractors have been employed to carry out transport and reconstruction duties, although, they too, have been regularly targeted by insurgents.

    The War Against NGOs
Naomi Klein is the author of No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies Editor's Note: This commentary was published by The Globe and Mail on June 20, 2003, and is reprinted with permission of the author. The Bush administration has found its next target for pre-emptive war, but it's not Iran, Syria or North Korea not yet, anyway. Before launching any new foreign adventures, the Bush gang has some homeland housekeeping to take care of: It is going to sweep up those pesky non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are helping to turn world opinion against U.S. bombs and brands. The war on NGOs is being fought on two clear fronts. One buys the silence and complicity of mainstream humanitarian and religious groups by offering lucrative reconstruction contracts. The other marginalizes and criminalizes more independent-minded NGOs by claiming that their work is a threat to democracy. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is in charge of handing out the carrots, while the American Enterprise Institute, the most powerful think tank in Washington, D.C., is wielding the sticks.
Many humanitarian leaders are shocked to hear their work described as "an arm" of government.

Representatives of forty InterAction member agencies and InterAction's Commission on the Advancement of Women have just returned from Beijing, where they joined over 50,000 other NGO and governmental delegates at the NGO Forum on Women '95 and the UN Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW). For InterAction and its members, the Beijing events were a dramatic and successful culmination of almost two years of preparatory work which began at a snowbound meeting of the Commission on the Advancement of Women (CAW) in January 1994. Both the Forum and Conference mark a triumph for NGOs and the international women's movement. In the face of many obstacles imposed by the Chinese government prior to and in Beijing, conservative opposition to women's rights, and differences amongst women's groups themselves, NGOs proved their strength in numbers and in political savvy. More than 30,000 women and men made it to China for the NGO Forum despite problems with last minute visa approvals and hotel confirmations. The Conference included over 3,000 accredited NGOs, which is more than ten times the number that attended the 1985 Nairobi Conference. These many, diverse groups demonstrated a powerful sense of purpose, rising above physical and political constraints to secure an outcome supportive of rights and opportunities for all women.

    Non-governmental organization
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A non-governmental organization NGO ) is an organization that is not part of a government and was not founded by states. NGOs are therefore typically independent of governments. Although the definition can technically include for-profit corporations , the term is generally restricted to social, cultural, legal, and environmental advocacy groups having goals that are noncommercial, primarily. NGOs are usually non-profit organizations that gain at least a portion of their funding from private sources. Current usage of the term is generally associated with the United Nations and authentic NGOs are those that are so designated by the UN. Greenpeace activists climbing a wall in protest against Esso Exxon Mobil in March Because the label "NGO" is considered too broad by some, as it might cover anything that is non-governmental, many NGOs now prefer the term private voluntary organization (PVO). A 1995 UN report on global governance estimated that there are nearly 29,000 international NGOs. National numbers are even higher: The United States has an estimated 2 million NGOs, most of them formed in the past 30 years. Russia has 65,000 NGOs. Dozens are created daily. In
