Government of Canada funding helps teach youth about employment opportunities in rural North East Saskatchewan
Date: November 1, 2002
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MELFORT, SASKATCHEWAN - Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament for Wascana, on behalf of the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada, today announced funding of $8,235 through the Youth Employment Strategy. The project, the Tiger Lily School Division's Career Development Program, will give youth between the ages of 15 and 30, from the Pleasantdale, Gronlid, Star City and Naicam areas, the chance to plan their career paths. Local employers will talk to the young participants, who are either in or out of school, about local labour market information and opportunities, and instructors will help them design and develop a career portfolio. The youth will also attend career fairs. "The Government of Canada is committed to helping young people make the often difficult transition from school to work. Career planning is an essential step in making this transition successful," said Minister Goodale. "The Government is proud to work with community partners like the Tiger Lily School Division to help youth in rural Saskatchewan develop career plans and expose them to the vast array of opportunities available right here at home."

This was that some teachers should be reserved for teaching only brighter pupils. Here is what he is reported as saying:

Over to you for your comment. P.S. I've just heard on the radio that the Tory education chap is proposing to remove two thirds of the paper-pushers from the Department of Education etc. I know people say the Tories have no chance of getting into power yet, but wouldn't this move fit in well with devolving educational decisions to teachers, parents et al.? Just a thought.

How Many Government Agencies Does It Take To Teach Soldiers Arabic?
by Fred Kaplan
Slate
June 16, 2005
http://slate.msn.com/id/2116330/ I've just read one of the funniest and saddest government documents I've run across in years. Published by the Pentagon (the source of most such things) under the title " Defense Language Transformation Roadmap ," it details the official plan for improving foreign-language skills among U.S. military personnel. The plan is meant to fill an urgent need. It was ordered by the deputy secretary of defense, administered by the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, and coordinated with the service secretaries, combat commanders, and Joint Chiefs of Staff. And to read it is to see, with your own increasingly widening eyes, the Pentagon's (or is it the federal government's?) sheer inability to get anything done on time. The document—only 19 pages, so take a look—traces, all too clearly, the project's shameful chronology. It got under way in November 2002—over a year after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks—when the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness was directed to have the military departments review their requirements for language professionals (interpreters, translators, area specialists, and so forth). This review was a bust—or, in the document's more delicate language, it "resulted in narrowly scoped requirements based on current manning authorizations instead of … projected needs."

Clarke vows to 'let teachers teach'
Polly Curtis
Wednesday October 30, 2002

Charles Clarke
Professionalism, teamwork and leadership were outlined as the priorities of the new education secretary, Charles Clarke, who believes they will "let teachers teach". He told the audience at Oxford United football club's Kassam Stadium this morning that he would focus on primary and secondary schools, and reiterated a "partnership" between teachers and government. "My first priority as secretary of state for education will be the quality and standard of our primary and secondary schools. I emphasise that the heart of our education system is in primary and secondary schools, and that will be our number one commitment."

To become more credible, student governments must stop limiting themselves to social, volunteer, and fundraising activities and address the broader civic responsibilities of their role. "One of the most important purposes of education is to prepare young people to become active and informed citizens of the communities in which they live. It is essential that students be given meaningful opportunities to participate in the governance of the school community. " - NCSS Guidelines and Principles for Student Government Student governments, as they currently exist in many of our schools, are untapped opportunities for active civic engagement. Well-intentioned advisers too often have allowed student government to languish or be marginalized to the point where it is most commonly identified with organizing social activities, volunteer actions such as blood drives, and fundraising. In fact, one of the schools in a conference my high school formerly belonged to prided itself on raising more than $20,000 each year but did little to address student concerns or issues.

Hollandistan Follies : Dutch government financed courses will teach Moroccans how to pick up women
Beila Rabinowitz, the director of Militant Islam Monitor , has made a translation of this Dutch piece from Algemeen Dagblad. (Thanks to Anthony for the link.) Moroccan Youth will shortly be able to follow a course in how to pick up women. The city district center is offering a 'pick up' course, according to the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper. The holder of the youth portfolio of the district Beatrijs Tolk, thinks that the atmosphere in the city center will improve if Moroccan youths learn how to pick up women. "The boys just don't know what to do." This leads to problems , especially on the "shopping evenings," explained Tolk. Many youth from the African side of the Mediterranean Sea are very awkward when it comes to picking up girls. It is more harassment and molesting then trying to pick them up. That can lead to a very nasty atmosphere." Comments Rabinowitz: Theo van Gogh wrote an about the Moroccan's view of Dutch women in an article entitled "How Come?" and said that he would not even consider forbidding his son to play with the Moroccan children on his street despite a series of vicious incidents involving Muslims and rhetorically asked : "...Should I remind him about how his mother was continually cursed at by Moroccan girls and called a 'Dutch whore' ?

On Principle February 1997 by: Stephen F. Knott In Federalist #55, James Madison discussed the character of the citizenry and its relation to the success of republican government. This particular form of government, according to Madison, "presupposes the existence of these qualities [qualities worthy of esteem and confidence] in a higher degree than any other form." It would seem a legitimate and important question to ask whether the federalists or the anti-federalists envisioned a form of government capable of nurturing these "better qualities." < /P> The focus on institutional arrangements found in The Federalist Papers represents Publius’ faith in the new science of politics and in the ability of man to order his life. Alexander Hamilton noted in Federalist #9 that "the science of politics, however, like most other sciences, has received great improvement. The efficacy of various principles is now well understood, which were either not known at all, or imperfectly known to the ancients." Madison and Hamilton’s faith in mans’ ability to design institutions of government capable of constraining mans’ lower impulses and supplementing traditional forms of restraint on human behavior is somewhat disturbing. In their abandonment of or at best, lack of faith in extra-governmental institutions concerned with the formation of mens’ character, Publius appears to endorse the lowered expectations of what one should expect from the citizenry.
