Important Week for World Bank Whistleblower Rights
Congress returns this week to take up the Development Bank Reform and Reauthorization Act, S. 1129, introduced and unanimously approved on July 26 by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after more than a year of field investigations, hearings and public roundtable forums. In addition, the FY 2006 omnibus appropriations law that soon goes to conference contains an amendment that Committee Chairman Richard Lugar (R.-IN) teamed up with Senator Patrick Leahy (D.-NH) to secure Senate passage of a similar reform package (S. A. 1293 passed on July 20). Click here to read more about this development!
Hanford Pipefitters Victorious in Trial
Earlier today, the trial in the case of 11 Hanford pipefitter whistleblowers, represented by Seattle attorney Jack Sheridan and the Government Accountability Project (GAP), came to a close. All eleven pipefitters were victorious, as Fluor Federal Services, a Department of Energy Contractor at the Hanford site, was found liable for damages totaling $4,760,000.

GPP works to encourage the government to use its immense purchasing power to promote safe, cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally-sound products. The government is the largest consumer in the United States, representing 20 percent of the gross national product. This purchasing leverage can be an enormously effective tool which can save taxpayers money, set the standard for private industries, expand the marketplace for "green" technologies, and consequently make these technologies and environmentally preferable products more available to consumers as a whole.
